Bruno Fernandes in flare-up with Everton star as Man Utd own goal costs win

Daily Mirror2 days ago
MAN UTD 2-2 EVERTON: Bryan Mbeumo made his first appearance in a United shirt, but Everton twice battled back to earn a draw in Atlanta after a bizarre Ayden Heaven own goal
Manchester United and Everton played out a draw in the final game of the Premier League Summer Series at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Bruno Fernandes gave United the lead from the penalty spot, before Iliman Ndiaye equalised with a fine angled finish. Substitute Mason Mount restored United's lead, but an Ayden Heaven own goal 15 minutes from time ensured it ended honours even.

Ruben Amorim's side lifted the trophy, after remaining unbeaten in the Stateside mini-tournament, with two wins and a draw. Here are five talking points from the final fixture of the US tour:

BRYAN MBEUMO MAKES ENCOURAGING UNITED DEBUT
Bryan Mbeumo made his long-awaited United debut, following his £71million move from Brentford, having sat out the first two tour games in the US to work on his fitness.
Playing as a right-sided No.10, Mbeumo had a quiet start to the game, but played a role in United's opener, delivering a first-time pass to Amad, who won a generous penalty when he went down after little contact from James Tarkowski, with Fernandes converting from the spot.
Mbeumo had earlier been involved in a slick attacking move involving Fernandes, Amad and Matheus Cunha, the latter unable to get his shot on target. Mbeumo was unlucky not to score just before the half-hour, when he had two shots blocked in quick succession, racing on to the loose ball after Jordan Pickford had blocked a Fernandes effort. Mbeumo was replaced at half-time by Patrick Dorgu and United's newest recruit still has work to do to get up to full fitness for the start of the new season.
UGARTE STILL A LIABILITY AT TIMES
Manuel Ugarte was one of United's most impressive players in their opening tour game, a 2-1 win over West Ham at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. Pressing high, winning back possession with tenacity and speed, Ugarte's high-tempo performance suggested he was in pole position to start United's Premier League opener at home to Arsenal on August 17.
Here, though, the Uruguay midfielder's shortcomings resurfaced, never more so than in the 40th minute, when he attempted to bring the ball out from just outside of his own penalty area, only to be dispossessed by James Tarkowski. Idrissa Gueye picked up the loose ball and crossed for Iliman Ndiaye, who applied a clinical angled finish at the far post to make it 1-1. The goal was entirely Ugarte's fault and it remains to be seen if Amorim feels he can trust him to start against Arsenal.

A HUGE SEASON AWAITS FOR MAINOO
At the start of United's US tour, Amorim said he had 'big plans' for Kobbie Mainoo this season, in contrast to last term, when the England midfielder fell out of favour under his new boss. A sub for United's final three games, Maino came on with a minute left as United lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. On tour, however, Amorim's selection and praise of Mainoo suggests the 21-year-old will play a bigger role in the upcoming season.
'Mainoo, with those feet, playing the ball, if he finds the right pace, I will find a new solution,' said Amorim. 'He's going to be faster.' Unlike Ugarte, Mainoo looked assured in midfield, with Fernandes – who played deeper in the previous game - operating higher up the pitch. Given the way last season fizzled out for him, the upcoming one is one of huge significance for Mainoo, for club and country, with the World Cup back here in the US at the end of it.

MASON MOUNT GOAL A TIMELY REMINDER OF HIS QUALITY
Having been a hostage to injury for most of his two seasons at United, following his £60m move from Chelsea, Mason Mount has become a somewhat forgotten man. Although he ended last season on a positive note, returning to the starting line-up for the Europa League final and scoring three goals, the jury remains out on Mount because of his unavailability through injury.
But on tour he has looked sharp and, most importantly, free from the persistent injury issues that have held him back from showing his best since joining United. Here, Mount showcased his goal threat, producing a fine angled finish 10 minutes after coming on in the second-half, to put United ahead.

Although there will be huge competition at United next season, with one game a week following their failure to qualify for Europe, Mount has served notice he can play a key role and make up for lost time.
FERNANDES AND NDIAYE FLARE-UP GIVES EDGE TO GAME
Too often, these pre-season games can be insipid affairs, where players play within themselves to avoid injury or overload before the start of the new campaign. But there has been a competitive edge to all six games as part of the Premier League Summer series and, in this encounter, some needle between United skipper Fernandes and Everton goalscorer Iliman Ndiaye.
Deep into the second-half, Fernandes tried to recover the ball from Ndiaye, with a robust challenge from behind that the Senegal forward deemed too excessive. Pushes were exchanged between Fernandes and Ndiaye, with team-mates rushing to intervene between them, while play continued and Everton made it 2-2 with an own goal from Ayden Heaven. When the dust had settled on their flare-up, Fernandes and Ndiaye made up, but not before both had been shown yellow cards.

Arsenal starlet Max Dowman makes feelings clear on Liverpool wonderkid Rio Ngumoha

Liverpool have high hopes for young forward Rio Nguhoma this season after watching the 16-year-old dazzle for Arne Slot in pre-season, scoring yet another goal in a friendly win over Athletic Bilbao Arsenal starlet Max Dowman has made his admiration for Liverpool youngster Rio Ngumoha clear after he netted in their 4-1 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao - calling him "the coldest" in a social media post. ‌ Ngumoha - who is still just 16 - is being tipped for great things after impressing for the Reds during pre-season, scoring three times so far and making a real case for being involved in Arne Slot's first team squad this season. ‌ He first caught the eye in a 3-1 friendly win over Preston last month before dazzling during Liverpool's pre-season tour in Asia - and his performance against Bilbao has only strengthened calls from fans for him to be integrated in the 2025-26 campaign. ‌ And Dowman, 15, who is another fantastic youth prospect for Arsenal, lauded Ngumoha after his latest strike. In an Instagram post, he uploaded a picture of Ngumoha celebrating his goal against Bilbao alongside a caption which said "the coldest". Dowman and Ngumoha know each other well after playing together as team-mates for England's youth sides. Just like Nguomha, Dowman has also featured for his club during pre-season after being involved in Arsenal's own tour of Asia after being entrusted to play in friendlies against AC Milan and Newcastle despite his tender age. The new season might be too soon for Dowman to be introduced fully into the first team, but Ngumoha has every chance at Liverpool - particularly if the club do not end up signing striker Alexander Isak. Speaking about the player's impact this summer, manager Slot said: "Rio is showing things every time in pre-season. ‌ "We've only played two games over here and we haven't played against Premier League opponents yet, but I see him train, I see him play, and the impact he has when he trains and plays is really promising. "Playing in the Premier League, playing every three days with the Champions League games in between, that's something else. "But he's definitely a player who shows that if he keeps bringing these performances in, it definitely won't be the last time he plays a few minutes for Liverpool. It's all about consistency. He needs to show it every single day we're on the pitch. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Myles Lewis-Skelly makes 'demanding' Mikel Arteta claim and names two Arsenal leaders

Myles Lewis-Skelly enjoyed a brilliant breakout year at Arsenal last season as he made a total of 43 appearances at the age of just 18 and now looks to be the club's first choice left-back Arsenal star Myles Lewis-Skelly has hailed his "demanding" manager Mikel Arteta as he praised the Spaniard for holding his players to the highest standards possible. ‌ The teenage left-back enjoyed a superb breakthrough season at the Emirates last season after being given a chance by Arteta at the age of just 18. Lewis-Skelly has wasted little time making an impact as he went on to make 15 starts in the Premier League and seven in the Champions League. ‌ His performances were rewarded with his first ever England cap after new Three Lions boss handed him a debut against Albania, in which he scored his first goal. ‌ The youngster has been discussing his rise to prominence in an interview with GQ magazine and pinpointed Arteta for making sure he and other Arsenal stars were always on their "A-game". When asked what the Spaniard was like to work under, he said: "Demanding and in the best way. He holds you to a high standard, and if you don't meet that standard, he's going to let you know about it. "You can't get away with being silly in training; you've got to be on your A-game and apply yourself." ‌ Lewis-Skelly said another factor in his quick rise to the first team was his ability to learn quickly and added he was always keen to observe other top players in training. "I'd say that's one of my super strengths," he added. "My ability to take in information quickly and process it has helped the team recognise my skills. "I know where I need to be and what I should expect from another player to do in a situation, and it all comes from practice and watching other great players." ‌ One of those players is Declan Rice, who he called a "sensational leader" and also reserved praise for Bukayo Saka because of their "similar journeys" through the academy. "I'll definitely say Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka definitely," he said. "Dec is a sensational leader, someone who knows what to say at the right moment every time. Bukayo had a similar journey to mine, so I've been asking him a lot of questions about how it's been for him and what helped him." Lewis-Skelly has played a total of 43 times for Arsenal so far and looks to be the first choice left-back ahead of Ricardo Calafiori and Oleksandr Zinchenko for the 2025-26 season. I don't think about it – Liverpool's Florian Wirtz unfazed by £100m price tag

Liverpool's record signing Florian Wirtz insists his price tag is irrelevant to him and he is just focused on making the Premier League champions better ahead of their title defence. The Germany attacking midfielder arrived at Anfield for an initial £100million, with a further £16m of achievable add-ons making his move from Bayer Leverkusen a potentially British record-breaking one. However, speaking after impressing in a 3-2 friendly win over Athletic Bilbao on Monday evening, the 22-year-old brushed off the figures involved. 'I don't think about it. I just want to play football and how much money the clubs pay between each other, it doesn't matter,' he said. 'Of course the big challenge is to win the title again and it is the most difficult thing so (I will) try and just create chances and also work against the ball. 'I can also run a lot so (I will) bring this to the team and then with the ball I can make the team better and bring my team-mates into better situations. 'I came because I thought I could fit in this team and I am enjoying to play with these players and getting every time a little bit better so I am happy with how it is going.' Wirtz's game is based around carrying the ball with purpose and bringing team-mates into play with his close control and lots of touches in and around the penalty area. However, he will also provide a goal threat – he scored 57 times in 197 appearances for Leverkusen – and almost broke the deadlock against Bilbao with a header which clipped the crossbar. He may find the Premier League is less forgiving than the Bundesliga but he is looking forward to finding out. 'I am a player who needs freedom on the pitch and the manager gives it to me because I have to respect the position and the players around me,' he added. 'I will try to find the right places to be and the right spaces to get the ball and to be dangerous and create chances – I have not played a match in the Premier League but I am looking forward and that is why I came.' Asked whether he thought playing in England was more difficult than Germany and whether he would be able to continue to play his own game, he replied: 'To be honest, I don't know. 'There are some differences to Germany but I think there is also something I can learn and make me better so I am really looking forward to it. 'It's more intense and more physical, every player is really strong, really fast. That is what everybody is telling me.'
