Why Pedro Pascal Spoke Out Against J.K. Rowling

Buzz Feed6 hours ago

If you follow pop culture online at all, you probably remember when Pedro Pascal called out J.K. Rowling on IG earlier this year.
The actor has been outspoken about trans rights in the past, and his sister Lux is also trans. So when the Harry Potter author took to Twitter in April to celebrate the UK Supreme Court's decision essentially ruling that trans women aren't legally women, Pedro had some strong words for her reaction.
When activist Tariq Ra'ouf, said in an Instagram video, "It has become our mission as the general public to make sure that every single thing that's Harry Potter related fails...because that awful disgusting shit, that has consequences," Pedro "liked" the video and replied in the comments, "Awful disgusting SHIT is exactly right. Heinous LOSER behavior."
In a new Vanity Fair profile, Pedro opened up about his decision to speak out publicly against J.K.'s behavior, and his response was about as refreshing as it gets.
In the interview, Pedro said that the response to his comment made him feel like 'that kid that got sent to the principal's office a lot for behavioral issues in public schools in Texas feeling scared and thinking, 'What'd I do?''
'The one thing that I would say I agonized over a little bit was just, 'Am I helping? Am I fucking helping?'' he added. 'It's a situation that deserves the utmost elegance so that something can actually happen, and people will actually be protected."
"Listen, I want to protect the people I love. But it goes beyond that. Bullies make me fucking sick.'
Lux also defended her brother's comment in the profile: 'But it is heinous loser behavior," she said. "And he said that as the older brother to someone saying that our little sister doesn't exist.'

Michael Cera Recalls Getting Schooled By Tom Cruise During Their First Meeting

may be one of Hollywood's most unassuming stars, but even he couldn't avoid a classic moment during their very first meeting. During an appearance on "The Louis Theroux Podcast," the "Arrested Development" alum revealed that he was scolded by the "Mission: Impossible" star while working together on a sketch for the MTV Movie Awards. The project featured Tom Cruise reprising his outrageous "Tropic Thunder" character, Les Grossman, in a series of pre-taped segments. "It was surreal to work with Tom Cruise," Cera said. "It was fascinating. Tom runs the set. I was there for like five minutes, but what I observed was, he was like the first AD on the set. He was such a leader." But things got off to an unexpected start when Michael Cera chatted with a writer during filming, something Cruise didn't take lightly. "They were in the middle of a take, and I was talking to the writer, just kind of mumbling. Tom Cruise looks at me, I've never met him before, and he goes, 'Is that Michael Cera talking during a f-cking take?'" Cera recalled. While the comment came across as intense, Cera insists Cruise was mostly joking… kind of. "I think he was joking. But it was also like, do shut up, you know?" he laughed. "I was like, 'Hey man, it wasn't me, it was the writer.' He said, 'I'm kidding, I'm kidding.'" Cera, ever the good sport, chalked it up to a surreal Hollywood moment with a superstar known for his commanding on-set presence. "It's surreal to meet Tom Cruise," he added. "He was very friendly." The actor's recollection came as part of a larger conversation about Scientology, though Cera was quick to clarify that he's had no personal exposure to the belief system. "I'm sure I will be treated to some after this discussion," he joked. Theroux reassured him, saying he hadn't said anything offensive. "Oh, I'm not picking a fight," Cera laughed. In the same interview, Michael Cera also dropped a bombshell of his own, he once walked away from a potential role in the "Harry Potter" spinoff franchise "Fantastic Beasts" out of fear that it would make him too famous. "I don't even know if I was offered, I think I just declined to engage with it because I think it would be like probably a six-year commitment or something," Cera admitted. "But also, I did sort of make a conscientious choice to limit my exposure a little bit, or just try and be a little more in control of it." He explained that the tone of the films especially influenced his decision. "I had a big fear of doing things that I would get too famous," he said, noting that children's movies especially posed that risk. The "Fantastic Beasts" films, prequels to the "Harry Potter" saga, follow magical creature expert Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as he's drawn into a battle against dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. Though author J.K. Rowling initially envisioned five installments, the future of the franchise remains unclear. These days, however, Michael Cera is more open to the idea of joining a big franchise. "I think I've outgrown that particular feeling," he said. "But if a franchise came along now and seemed interesting, I don't think on the grounds of it being a franchise I would storm out of the office or anything." Following Michael Cera's retelling, fans took to social media to share their thoughts, and, unsurprisingly, opinions were mixed. "I've heard nothing but good things about Tom Cruise. Have a few friends that met him and they said he was so nice and kind. Sad that he's in a cult," one user wrote. Another wasn't quite so charitable toward Cera, "Cera is a triple Z-list no-talent actor at best." Meanwhile, some defended Cruise's reaction, noting the moment may have fit his character: "Yelling at Cera while playing the obnoxious Les Grossman sounds on point." Still, others aimed at Cruise's polarizing reputation, "Probably the single most dislikable person on the planet... and it's not even close," one commenter wrote. Another added, "Michael, you will find cult members are like that. It is the delusion they carry." Though the moment with Cruise was brief, it clearly left a lasting impression on the "Superbad" star, along with a pretty great Hollywood story to tell.

Pedro Pascal Called Out J.K. Rowling's ‘Heinous Loser Behavior' Over Anti-Trans Law Because ‘Bullies Make Me F—ing Sick': ‘I Want to Protect the People I Love'

Pedro Pascal said in a new Vanity Fair cover story that 'bullies make me fucking sick' when the topic of J.K. Rowling was brought up. The 'Harry Potter' author has regularly courted controversy since 2020 for sharing anti-trans views on social media. Pascal's younger sister, Lux, came out as transgender in 2021. The actor made headlines in late April for slamming Rowling's 'heinous loser behavior' after she celebrated the U.K. Supreme Court's anti-trans ruling that transgender women are not legally considered women and transgender men are not legally considered men. Pascal's other sister, Javiera, defended her brother's comment, telling Vanity Fair: 'But it is heinous loser behavior. And he said that as the older brother to someone saying that our little sister doesn't exist.' More from Variety J.K. Rowling Raves About HBO's 'Harry Potter' Series After Working 'Closely' With the Writers: 'I've Read the First Two Episodes. They Are So, So Good' From 'Andor' and 'The Studio' to Selena Gomez and Pedro Pascal, 14 Possible Emmy Records and Milestones in Sight Emmys Acting Contenders: From Pedro Pascal and Diego Luna to Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, Who Was Officially Submitted As the comment went viral across social media, Pascal said he briefly felt like 'that kid that got sent to the principal's office a lot for behavioral issues in public schools feeling scared and thinking, 'What'd I do?'' But he knew he could not stay silent as Rowling celebrated the anti-trans ruling, which she did by posting a victory photo of herself drinking with the caption: 'I love it when a plan comes together.' 'The one thing that I would say I agonized over a little bit was just, 'Am I helping? Am I fucking helping?'' Pascal told the magazine. 'It's a situation that deserves the utmost elegance so that something can actually happen, and people will actually be protected. Listen, I want to protect the people I love. But it goes beyond that. Bullies make me fucking sick.' In the aftermath of Pascal's comment, some of Rowling's defenders started sharing a viral clip of the actor taking his 'Fantastic Four' co-star Venessa Kirby's hand at Comic-Con in order to somehow prove Pascal is presumptuous with women. But Kirby isn't having that. 'What happened is we were both incredibly nervous going out in front of thousands of people who love this comic,' Kirby told Vanity Fair. 'He wanted me to know that we were in this together, and I found it a lovely gesture and was very glad to squeeze his hand back.' Pascal was far from the only prominent celebrity to condemn the U.K. Supreme Court's decision. Actors such as his 'The Last of Us' co-star Bella Ramsey and 'Bridgerton' favorite Nicola Coughlan all signed an open letter opposing the anti-trans ruling. 'We the undersigned film and television professionals stand in solidarity with the trans, non-binary and intersex communities who have been impacted by the Supreme Court ruling on April 17,' the letter read. 'The Supreme Court's ruling that, under the Equality Act, 'woman' is defined by biological sex, states that 'the concept of sex is binary, a person is either a woman or a man'. We believe the ruling undermines the lived reality and threatens the safety of trans, non-binary and intersex people living in the UK.' Another signee of the letter was 'I May Destroy You' Emmy nominee Paapa Essiedu, who just so happens to be taking on the role of Severus Snape in HBO's 'Harry Potter' television series. Rowling is closely involved in the development of the show but wrote on X that she has no problem with cast members who think differently than her. 'I don't have the power to sack an actor from the series and I wouldn't exercise it if I did,' Rowling wrote on X while sharing an article about Essiedu signing the letter. 'I don't believe in taking away people's jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine.'
