Stop protecting bullies in schools, urges Minister

Kota Kinabalu: Assistant Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Fairuz Renddan hopes the relevant authorities and schools take firm action and not protect bullies in schools. 'If there is a bullying victim, then clearly, there is a bully. This matter must be dealt with seriously and the perpetrator must be given a stern lesson. Those in charge must act promptly to resolve it.
Advertisement 'It is unacceptable to shield the identity of an immoral bully simply because he or she is also a student. 'If today they bully their schoolmates, what will they become tomorrow when they leave school and enter society? Who will they bully then? These are the seeds of criminal behaviour that can ultimately damage the harmony of our communities,' he said, in a statement Friday. 'We send our children to school to learn, to gain knowledge, to make friends and to work hard towards becoming valuable members of society. 'What is the point if these efforts are undermined by the presence of harmful individuals like bullies, while the authorities and schools remain silent, protect them and allow victims and their families to suffer in silence due to this grave injustice? He was apparently referring to the teenage girl who attempted to jump into the Sungai Padas last Sunday, believed due to bullying. On the case went viral on social media involving a Form One female student from SMA Tun Datu Mustafa Limauan in Papar, who fell to her death from the third floor of the school building last Wednesday, he said: 'As a father myself, I am heartbroken by such tragedies. I think of my own children in school.' The victim was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital but was pronounced dead on Thursday night. 'We raise our children with utmost care, never imagining that they might die because of something so senseless and unthinkable,' he said, and expressed his condolences. 'I sincerely hope that justice will prevail. Do not protect bullies. Do not allow the culture of bullying to persist in our schools. 4 students detained over assault of classmate

Kuala Lumpur: Four 13-year-old students have been detained by the police to assist in investigations into the assault of a classmate at a shopping centre in Kajang. Kajang police chief Naazron Abdul Yusof said the boys were detained following a report lodged by their classmate at 12.57pm yesterday. He said investigations found that the incident occurred at about 11am on July 30, when the complainant and his classmates went to the shopping centre to address a disagreement. 'During the incident, a viral video captured the complainant being assaulted by two students, while two others recorded the act on their mobile phones,' he said in a statement. Naazron added that the victim received medical treatment at a nearby hospital, where he was confirmed to have sustained minor facial injuries. The four students involved were arrested in Kajang at 8.35pm yesterday and remanded for two days until Aug 2 to assist in investigations. The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, Section 506 of the same law for criminal intimidation, and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955. Naazron advised students to obey school rules and to avoid actions that could affect their future. Elderly Kuching woman loses over RM1.2 mln in love scam
File photo for illustration purposes KUCHING (Aug 1): A 64-year-old woman lost RM1,213,742 in an online love scam that began late last year. Acting Kuching district police chief Supt Merbin Lisa said the victim lodged a report on July 26, revealing she had been deceived over several months. The scam began in December 2024, when she was contacted via WhatsApp by someone using the name 'Zhao Yong' and the number +852 5747 3477. After building trust, the scammer introduced another individual posing as a lawyer named 'Hai Na Bai Chuan', who claimed to be handling a cash gift on Zhao's behalf. A third accomplice, purportedly a bank manager named 'Kamarul Ranizu', was later introduced to facilitate the transaction. 'Trusting the scammer's elaborate promises, the woman borrowed money from relatives, sold her car, and secured loans from licensed moneylenders to make a series of payments. 'Between December 2024 and July this year, she made a total of 25 transactions across 18 different bank accounts, supposedly to cover taxes and other 'processing fees'. 'Eventually realising she had been deceived, the victim reported the matter to police, disclosing the total loss of RM1,213,742,' Merbin said in a statement. He added that this case is among eight love scams recorded by Kuching district's Commercial Crime Investigation Division between Jan 1 and July 31 this year, with combined losses totalling RM1,326,050. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing the delivery of property, which carries a sentence of not less than one year and up to ten years in prison, whipping, and a possible fine upon conviction. Merbin urged the public to remain vigilant when engaging with strangers online. Lawyers question probe into Zara's death, lack of post-mortem

'Our client does not believe Zara took her own life. She believes there are criminal elements involved,' her counsel Hamid Ismail and Shahlan Jufri said in a statement. They revealed that Zara had confided in her mother about bullying by senior students, including one who allegedly said: "If I touch you, you'll bleed." The family claims to receive no updates from police between July 17 and 27. 'This silence worries our client. It gives the impression that the police did not investigate the death,' they added. Police only issued a short statement on July 28, and on July 31, it was disclosed that 60 individuals had been called in for questioning. On July 30, Noraidah filed a supplementary police report in Sipitang urging a thorough probe and revealed that school authorities had advised her not to lodge a report. The lawyers also questioned the claim that Zara fell from the third floor noting her face showed no injuries, bruises, or wounds typically associated with a fall from such height. Despite these circumstances, no post-mortem was conducted before Zara was buried. The lawyers have since written to the State Attorney General's Office, urging an inquest under Section 339(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code and requesting Zara's body be exhumed to determine the true cause of death. The firm also dismissed online allegations blaming the mother, calling them false and malicious.
