Shimla: Three test positive for scrub typhus at IGMC

Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], August 11 (ANI): Out of four suspected cases of scrub typhus tested at Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital (IGMC) on Monday, three have returned positive, hospital authorities confirmed.Dr. Rahul Rao, Medical Superintendent of IGMC, said in a brief press note issued to the media.'Today, four samples were tested for scrub typhus at our laboratory, and three have tested positive. Patients are under treatment and being closely monitored. We are taking all necessary precautions to prevent complications," he said.Scrub typhus, caused by the bite of infected chiggers (larval mites), is a seasonal vector-borne disease that often spikes during the monsoon months in Himachal Pradesh. Doctors have urged residents to remain alert, wear protective clothing, and seek immediate medical attention in case of high fever, chills, or unexplained rashes.According to health experts, early detection and timely treatment can prevent serious complications such as respiratory distress or organ failure. IGMC has also issued an advisory for high-risk rural and hilly areas, asking people to avoid overgrown bushes and maintain hygiene around homes.This high-intensity fever is caused by the mites in the shrubs, which transmit the bacterial infection (Orientia tsutsugamushi). This fever caused many deaths of US army troops in the Southeast Asian region of Burma and Ceylon. This also caused many deaths in Europe during the 2nd World War. Scrub typhus is also known as 'Tsutsugamushi Triangle' because of its effect and extension as a common epidemic in the regions of northern Japan and eastern Russia, North and South Australia, Pakistan and Afghanistan in the West.In another development, the Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu today took a significant leap in the healthcare sector of the state, inaugurating the state's first robot-assisted surgical facility at the Atal Institute of Medical Super Specialities, Chamiana, Shimla. Health & Family Welfare Minister Dr (Col) Dhani Ram Shandil and Rural Development & Panchayati Raj Minister Anirudh Singh, along with senior officials and doctors, were present at the inauguration.The facility opened with the first-ever robotic-assisted prostate cancer surgery in the state, performed by renowned urologist Dr Anand Kumar from Max Hospital, assisted by Dr Pamposh Raina. Lupin ties up with Sandoz to commercialise biosimilar product
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 12 (PTI) Drug firm Lupin on Tuesday said it has partnered with Switzerland-based Sandoz Group AG to commercialise its biosimilar ranibizumab across multiple regions. Under the terms of the agreement, Sandoz will oversee commercialisation of the product across the European Union (excluding Germany), Switzerland, Norway, Australia, Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Malaysia, the Mumbai-based drug maker said in a statement. Lupin will be responsible for manufacturing the product and for regulatory submissions, it added. As per the deal, Sandoz will hold exclusive marketing rights in most of the designated markets, except for France, Australia, Vietnam, and Malaysia, where it will have semi-exclusive marketing rights, Lupin Ltd said. Pursuant to another agreement executed between the two companies, Sandoz will acquire sole rights for commercialization of Lupin's biosimilar ranibizumab in Canada, while Lupin will manage its manufacture and regulatory filings, it added. Ranibizumab is a recombinant humanized IgG1 monoclonal antibody fragment that binds to and inhibits vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGF-A). Its indications encompass the treatment of patients with neovascular (Wet) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), macular edema following retinal vein occlusion (RVO), diabetic macular edema (DME) among others. 'This partnership underscores our shared vision to expand global access to cutting-edge biologic therapies and improve outcomes for underserved patients," Lupin President EMEA and Emerging Markets Thierry Volle said. Shares of the company were trading marginally up at Rs 1,946.30 apiece on BSE. Mahesh Jadhav suffered a head injury during practice on an open ground. He was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, police said. 'Jadhav used to participate in the Dahi Handi festival every year. This incident is indicative of several Govinda troupes practising without proper safety measures, an official said. He said not using helmets, safety belts, and harnesses potentially increases the possibility of such incidents in the festive season. Dahisar Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR). When is Dahi Handi? Dahi Handi celebrations are part of Janmashtami that marks the birth of Lord Krishna. The festival will be celebrated on August 16. In Mumbai, the Dahi Handi festival has specific safety rules, including an age restriction for participants and a height limit for human pyramids. Children under 14 are not allowed to participate in the event. The height of human pyramids is limited to 20 feet. These rules were implemented to ensure the safety of participants, especially after concerns about injuries were raised. Age Limit: No children under 14 years of age are permitted to participate in Dahi Handi events. Height Limit: The height of human pyramids is restricted to a maximum of 20 feet, according to The Hindu. Safety Measures: Safety nets or mattresses should be placed below the pyramids to cushion any falls. Supervision: Children participating should be under strict supervision and in age-appropriate formations. In a major relief for thousands of 'Govindas' who risk injuries while forming human pyramids during the Dahi Handi festival, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the state's Sports Department to expand insurance cover to 1.5 lakh participants. The move comes after the Dahi Handi Coordination Committee, led by Minister Ashish Shelar met the Chief Minister to press for enhanced safety measures for Govindas. The delegation highlighted the growing popularity of Dahi Handi ever since the Maharashtra government granted it the status of an adventure sport. While the sport's recognition has boosted participation, it has also increased the risk of injuries during the formation of tall human pyramids. Over the past two years, the state government has provided insurance cover to about 75,000 Govindas. However, given the surge in the number of groups and young participants, the committee urged the Chief Minister to double the coverage to 1.5 lakh Govindas this year to ensure adequate safety and financial protection in case of accidents. Chief Minister Fadnavis responded positively to the demand and instructed the Sports Department to take prompt action to extend the insurance cover.
