People say this social media habit is 'weird' — but you're probably guilty of it

Metroa day ago
A new rule has been added to the book of social media etiquette, and honestly, we feel called out.
We're all guilty of following an Instagram account or two, just to be nosy. Maybe it's that girl who was popular at school, or that ex boyfriend youlove to hate on.
And, so as not to be branded a lurker, you reply to their stories with a simple 'like'. That little heart symbol dances across the screen, and you can rest easy, knowing you're a nice person.
Right? Wrong.
'I'm just now finding out that we aren't supposed to like people's IG stories,' wrote LA-based comedian Joey Pleasants on Threads. 'Some people think it's a form of flirting.'
There's long been discussion about 'soft-cheating', which refers to the betrayal grey areas that technology brings; things like interacting with posts from Instagram models, subscribing to people's OnlyFans, or watching porn behind your partner's back.
And now, liking an Instagram story has been firmly added to the list of shady social media behaviour you must avoid.
One commenter had been burnt before, saying: 'My girl's friend complained to her that I was liking their stories, apparently it's weird.'

When commenters on Joey's thread questioned why liking a story is such a crime, user Mikayla Schmitt summed it up for everyone.
'You're not supposed to like people's stories if you're in a relationship and the person's story you're liking is a person you find attractive/have an Internet crush on.'
She also added: 'The photo could be inappropriate for a person in a relationship to be liking.'
It might sound trivial, but 34% of people have ended a relationship due to something happening on social media.
But while a story like might seem like nothing to some, for others' it could be a big deal. Nia Williams, founder of relationship coaching service Miss Date Doctor, previously told Metro: 'While physical infidelity is more easily defined… online connections can also be considered cheating, depending on the couple's boundaries and values.'
Although one partner may see their online activity as 'curiosity or harmless fun,' Nia advises couples need to discuss how they'll naviage online interactions — including liking a persons' story.
She adds: 'Have a heartfelt conversation with your partner where you can express your concerns, establish clear boundaries, and work together to find compromises that honour your relationship values.'
If this is you, you're not alone. Many of the commenters on Joey's post admitted to liking stories with reckless abandon — and have recieved likes they can almost guarantee aren't flirtatious.
'Most of my followers are women older than my mother, and they like my stories. Pretty sure Debbie, Barbara, Cheryl, Susan, Linda, Pamela, Lisa, and Patricia aren't flirting with me,' wrote Brandy Simpson. More Trending
'Like what you like. It's why you follow people in the first place — because you like what they do. Let them know. Never waste an opportunity to make someone else feel good.'
'F**k that,' said another. 'Cute aesthetic pic? Heart. You said something funny? Heart. You look pretty? Heart. Food looks yummy? Heart. Idgaf.'
Others called themselves 'story-liking goblins' and 'whores' when it came to liking their friends Instagram stories.

'I'm like someone's great aunt on FB,' wrote Asia. 'If I see you having a grand time, looking great, or enjoying life, I'm going to like it. Far too people don't get hyped up and loved on. And in a world where we live at a distance, people need it.'

Celeste Barber breaks silence on shock 'Photoshop' scandal after appearing on glossy magazine cover: 'It's gonna piss some of you off'

Celeste Barber has responded to critics after she was widely slammed for her appearance on the cover of the upcoming September issue of Marie Claire. The comedian, 43, who is best known for poking fun at over-produced photos and videos often posted by beautiful models, has been accused of becoming 'what she mocked' by posing for the 'heavily photoshopped' cover shoot on her feed. However on Thursday, Celeste defiantly returned to Instagram to push back at her naysayers - insisting that her image wasn't photoshopped. 'Hi, I need to tell you all something about this photo shoot, and it's going to piss some of you off. It's not photoshopped! I just look that f**king good! I know!' Celeste said. 'You guys are so used to me showing you what I look like as a slapped arse. This is me as well! Guys, I just look this good,' she continued. Celeste went on to praise the creative team for transforming her into a covergirl. 'It's hard - I just look this good when there's 15 kilos of hair put on my head and then Koh [hairstylist] has to snatch my face up to give me a bit of a Kris Jenner lift to hold the wig in place,' she said. She went on to praise her makeup artist who painted her face 'like an absolute wizard,' adding: 'I have a feeling, I think they actually shipped lighting in for this, because sister needs a bit of help.' Celeste then credited her photographer for his 'amazing angles with the camera', before reiterating: 'This is just how I look. I'm so sorry, but I look f**king great.' The cover, which she shared to Instagram on Wednesday, saw Celeste attempting to stay true to her roots as she parodied singer Jennifer Lopez 's infamous 2000 Grammys green dress. However, some followers were left outraged to see how much Photoshop was used to give Celeste a flawless, almost unrecognisable visage in the image. 'How can you allow so much Photoshop when all you sell is authenticity?' one person wrote to the comedian. 'So photoshopped. What's a shame,' another added, as a third penned: 'Ah the irony.' 'Did they not know you were beautiful before? Isn't the whole point of the entire bit that you laugh in the face of the celebrity airbrush culture?' said someone else. 'And she became what she mocked,' one user commented. Others decided to turn the blame on Marie Claire. 'The amount of editing your photography team has done to Celeste goes against everything she stands for,' one outraged follower said. 'Heavily photoshopped Celeste Barber is sacrilege,' another agreed. Someone else stood up for Celeste, saying the media personality had every right to pose for a glamour shoot because she was 'making an impact' on the world. 'To connect with the regular normal day to day person is her shtick,' they added. 'If you don't understand that and solely judge from this picture then you don't know anything about her nor Marie Claire nor what it is to be a woman standing for other women!' Celeste is known for mocking models and celebrities for their over-the-top glamour shots and saucy videos flaunting their trim figures. Celeste was accused of becoming 'what she mocked' after she posed for the glamour shoot and shared it to Instagram In April, she left locals appalled with her latest stunt in Paris when she strolled the streets of the French capital in nothing but her undies. In footage shared to Instagram, she pranced around in her skimpy smalls sipping a coffee, mocking similar footage filmed by a young model in Italy. However, onlookers appeared less thrilled at her brazen display, with some pointing in disgust at her wild sideshow. The social media star captioned the footage with some amusing words. 'It's important to blend in when travelling,' she wrote.

Stranger Things actor Millie Bobby Brown adopts ‘sweet baby girl'

The Stranger Things actor Millie Bobby Brown and her husband, Jake Bongiovi, have announced they have become parents after adopting a 'sweet baby girl'. Brown, 21, and Bongiovi, 23, said in a statement on social media that they were 'beyond excited' to enter the next chapter of their lives. Alongside a sketch of a tree, the couple wrote on Instagram on Thursday: 'This summer, we welcomed our sweet baby girl through adoption. We are beyond excited to embark on this beautiful next chapter of parenthood in both peace and privacy.' The post, which was accompanied by the Beatles song Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da, continued: 'And then there were 3.' Brown, best known for her role as Eleven in the Netflix drama Stranger Things, and Bongiovi, a model who is the son of the musician Jon Bon Jovi, married last October after their engagement in 2023. Alongside photos from their wedding last year, Bongiovi wrote in a post at the time: 'Forever and always, your husband.' Brown has previously spoken about wanting to become a parent, adding that she wanted a large family with her husband. She mentioned the possibility of adopting. Speaking in March on the SmartLess podcast, hosted by Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett, the actor said: 'Jake knows how important it is to me [to have a child].' Brown, who recently appeared alongside Chris Pratt in sci-fi film The Electric State, added: 'Of course, I want to focus on really establishing myself as an actor and as a producer, but I also find it's so important to start a family, for me, personally.' In 2023, the publication of Brown's debut novel reignited a debate over ghostwritten celebrity books. Nineteen Steps, inspired by her grandmother's experience of the 1943 Bethnal Green tube disaster, was ghostwritten by author Kathleen McGurl yet the cover of the book featured only Brown's name. In response to a subsequently deleted tweet by Waterstones promoting the book, many X users had criticised the star. Brown had posted an image on Instagram of herself holding the book standing next to McGurl, with the caption: 'I couldn't have done this without you!' Zoella (the media personality Zoë Sugg), Katie Price and Naomi Campbell are among celebrities who have also used ghostwriters for their fiction books.

The 33-year-old singer, one half of twin double act Jedward, is going solo on the apps after being single for eight years. 5 John is best known as one half of Jedward Credit: Getty 5 John is shown on the profile looking for a 'long term relationship, open to short' Credit: Getty On the profile, John says he'll get along with someone who is "kind, playful and outdoorsy" and labels himself a music producer. The famously playful star – who was 17 when he and Edward first found fame on X Factor – jokes that he got an education at Harry Potter's Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He notes that he is looking for a "long term relationship, open to short". Opting to keep his brother out of any of the photos, his profile is filled with selfies, including one on a sofa with his dog while he sits in a black and red check shirt. Another just shows a picture of a red drink filled with fruit including blackberries and strawberries. Following the prompted "What if I told you that..." he responds: "You've scrolled this far so you probably fancy me a lil bit" with a winking face. The appearance of the profile comes as John's first major public move into dating in years. Both John and Edward keep their partners out of the spotlight, and are very rarely seen without each other. However, in 2017 the duo tried their luck at reality show dating, appearing on short-lived MTV series, Single AF. The show only ran for one series, but proved successful in an unexpected way with Geordie Shore's Marnie Simpson meeting Union J star Casey Johnson while filming. Jedward wow RTE viewers with 'lively' performance The pair are now married with three children together. Single AF proved unique in its concept by having viewers interact with the celebs in real time, and influencing who and where they dated potential matches. Splitting up to go on separate dates, both John and Edward entered the show with gusto, boasting about their sex skills and snogging their matches. While Edward found romance with Swedish girl Sabina, John was unfortunately not so lucky. He said about his time on the show: 'I have so much love for many people but not the romantic kind of love that I'm looking for…so no.' 5 Jedward are rarely seen without each other Credit: Getty 5 The star is searching for some romance in his life Credit: Getty
