50 UMS student 'ambassadors' in digital literacy effort
Nadi are government-run community facilities equipped with computers linked to the Internet.
The facilities are meant to bridge the digital divide in the country and offer local residents accurate information on government programmes.
Sabah is also the first state to roll out the Nadi ambassador programme, which is organised by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), in collaboration with UMS and government-run youth volunteer body Yayasan Sukarelawan Siswa.
Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Nadi ambassadors would also help MCMC raise awareness on Internet safety through the Safe Internet Campaign, by engaging with residents' associations and school students.
"Sabah was chosen, among other reasons, because during the Covid-19 pandemic, it faced significant Internet infrastructure challenges," he said after launching the Nadi ambassador programme at UMS yesterday.
Fahmi said there were 131 Nadi facilities in Sabah, and the ambassadors would undergo two days of training on how to support digital literacy efforts and promote the benefits of these centres to the public.
Fahmi said the student volunteers were selected jointly by MCMC and UMS.
The minister said he hoped that the UMS students would offer suggestions on improving telecommunications in Sabah.
He said the Nadi ambassador initiative would be expanded to universities nationwide with the help of their student councils. --BERNAMA

Russia launches direct flights to North Korea amid closer ties
MOSCOW: Russia initiated direct commercial flights to North Korea on Sunday, marking a significant step in deepening relations between the two nations. The first flight, operated by Nordwind Airlines, departed Moscow for Pyongyang, with tickets priced at 45,000 rubles (\$570). The route will operate once a month, according to Russia's transport ministry. Nordwind Airlines, previously focused on European holiday destinations before EU sanctions, now facilitates this strategic air link. The return flight from Pyongyang to Moscow is scheduled for Tuesday, as reported by Russia's state news agency TASS. The resumption of direct flights follows the restoration of train links on June 17, which had been suspended since 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The move underscores growing cooperation, including military collaboration, with North Korea supplying troops and weapons for Russia's operations in Ukraine. Last year, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a mutual defence pact during Putin's visit to Pyongyang. In April, North Korea confirmed deploying soldiers to Ukraine's frontline alongside Russian forces. – AFP

'I don't want our children to inherit the nation's debt'
MUAR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim warned that unchecked national debt could burden future generations, stressing his government's duty to rein in borrowing before it spirals further. He said his persistent warnings about national debt were driven by a responsibility to prevent the burden from being inherited by future generations. Malaysia's debt level remains high, and managing it responsibly is crucial to restoring investor confidence and safeguarding the country's economic future. "People complain that I always talk about debt, but how can we not? If we don't pay, who will? "Who's going to invest in a country that doesn't honour its debts? We must pay what we owe. "In 2022, the government borrowed RM100 billion. "The following year, we brought it down to RM90 billion. This year, it's RM80 billion. "We are controlling it to prevent ballooning debt," he said in his speech at the National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang 2025 launch at Dataran Tanjung Emas here today. Also present were Communications Minister and National Month Steering Committee chairman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, and Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. Anwar said he would not resort to populist spending at the expense of the country's financial stability. "I could easily spend more and look popular, but who will pay later? It will be our children. "That's not leadership, that's irresponsibility." He, however, said he had no objection to borrowing for meaningful development, especially for rural communities. "When the late Tun Abdul Razak was prime minister, he took World Bank loans to build rural projects, that I can accept. Our fathers borrowed to uplift the people. "But debt because of 'sakau' (embezzlement) – that is what we fight against. "We must act against it because money taken from the people must be returned to the people," he said.
