Jesus Christ Superstar review – Cynthia Erivo leads rousing LA revival
In the first half of the show, as the apostles ask Jesus about his plans, and as lepers ask him to heal them, Erivo's Jesus is restrained and she doesn't quite make the role fully her own: Jesus is composed even in uncertainty, steady even when overwhelmed. But immediately into the second act, after Jesus realizes a disciple will betray him and as he pleads with God against the death that awaits him, Erivo lets despair take over in Gethsemane, stoking a tender touchpoint that makes Jesus feel human but commanding, helpless and then resolute. There is no doubt that you're in the presence of a mastery of art form, of unbridled talent as Erivo sinks to her knees and resigns to God's will – tears filling her eyes, the music simple and her crystalline voice carrying into the night. The outpour at first doesn't feel quite earned but, on true skill and discipline, becomes moving and stunning to witness, enthralling the audience into a minute-long standing ovation.
Judas, a juicier role that runs from rebellion to righteousness to sorrow, is a punk delight. Lambert is perfectly cast, harnessing a despair that's mightily accessible throughout: he splits the difference between someone you'd meet at a bar who's got some regrets and someone who was born at the gates of hell. In Damned for All Time / Blood Money, as Judas wrestles with whether or not to betray Jesus and tell Pharisees and priests where he is so that they can capture him, Lambert is a wavering flag, a lilt of evil. After Jesus is taken and Judas realizes the pain he's wrought, Lambert offers in Judas' Death a window into a sorrow we've all reached for before, a glimmer of hope that you're not as bad as what you've just done.
Hamilton's Phillipa Soo, playing Mary Magdalene, brings a buttery voice and is a smart match to Erivo's, and governor of Judea Pontius Pilate (Raúl Esparza), a commanding presence. But perhaps because of these heavyweights, other moments are more forgettable: the choreography (especially the apostles') feels relatively simple and fades into the background, and the fanfare of King Herod (played by a last-minute John Stamos filling in for Josh Gad, who has Covid) in Herod's Song could have offered a thicker moment of fun and delight, but Stamos is too much bravado over jeer.
The set design for the most part leaves something to be desired, primarily a large screen hovering in the back; on it are graphics that aim to be camp but land more lazily – sometimes more literal camp with a mountain range of REI-type graphics, sometimes Vaporwave-like art you'd find at a Miami DJ set.
But the holiness of the Hollywood Bowl venue is undeniable: as Jesus's followers fawn and plead or when the orchestra softens with a solo nigh, a sense of devastation seeps in, the sky above the outdoor amphitheater a deep, navy hue, God's Earth the stage. Despite the unevenness of Jesus's conviction and some rushed ensemble songs, this rendition captures the tragedy of devotion and the contradictions of betrayal. 'I don't know how to love him,' sing Mary and Judas, in separate scenes – and still, you know they do.

This is the first picture of the young British mother whose father-in-law allegedly tried to drown in a swimming pool near Disney World in Florida. Hairdresser Jasmine Wyld, 33, was left with a scratch on her chest and fearing for her life after getting into a heated row with Mark Gibbon, 62, about his will during a luxury holiday. Ms Wyld shares two children with Mr Gibbon's son, Alex, who had previously worked with his father at his film and television lighting firm Ultralight in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire. He resigned as director in April 2023. Mr Gibbon Snr has since renamed the company as MRG Lighting. He is listed as the sole director. Facebook photos show Ms Wyld happily smiling with Alex and their two children, with one snap showing her posing with celebrity chef James Martin. Companies House documents show she was previously a director of Jasmine Elizabeth Hair, but the firm was dissolved 'via a voluntary strike off' in April 2024. Their nine-year-old daughter reportedly bravely jumped into the pool in an attempt to save her mother at the Solterra Resort in Davenport on Sunday after witnessing her grandfather repeatedly trying to plunge Ms Wyld's head under the water. Ms Wyld tonight declined to comment when contacted by the Daily Mail. According to the Polk County Sheriff's Office, Mr Gibbon had got into a spat with Ms Wyld over the 'stipulations of his will'. 'She advised that she could not breathe and believed that she was going to drown,' deputies wrote. '[The victim] advised that she had to fight Mark in order to get away from him and from under the water but he kept pushing her back under.' Mr Gibbon's company MRG Lighting has previously worked on television and film sets, as well as on music videos for Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Paloma Faith. He is also listed as the only director of Sage Hairdressing. Mr Gibbon allegedly only stopped the attempted drowning when two neighbouring sisters said they had called the Sheriff's Office. He was taken into custody on August 3 at around 5.19pm where he allegedly admitted to pushing his daughter-in-law under the water but denied trying to drown her. He claimed they were drinking when they got into a row about the will, reported Law and Crime. According to US website People, a witness told officers she had 'observed [Gibbon] push [Wyld] under the water and hold her there multiple times', and then watched as he 'scratched Jasmine on her chest.' Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said: 'It's great that Polk County draws visitors from all across the world, but we expect vacationers to behave while they visit with us, just as we expect our lifelong residents to do the same. 'Because Mr Gibbon couldn't control his anger, he may find himself spending a lot more time in Florida than he had anticipated.' Gibbon has been charged with two counts of battery and one count of attempted second-degree murder, according to court documents. He is next due in court on September 9.

Hulk Hogan police respond to wild conspiracy theories over WWE icon's tragic death
The police officers overseeing the death of WWE icon Hulk Hogan have dismissed wild conspiracy theories raised by his daughter, Brooke. Hogan, real name Terry Bollea, died on July 24 from a cardiac arrest, according to a Florida medical examiner's office. The 71-year-old had previously had leukemia and atrial fibrillation, an irregular heart rhythm, the report from the District Six Medical Examiner also said. However, despite his previous health issues, Hogan's daughter Brooke took to social media in the days that followed to accuse the authorities of foul play. Brooke had shared an article by radio personality Bubba the Love Sponge which read: 'Quick cremation without autopsy raises questions about Hulk Hogan's death'. Now, the Clearwater Police Department have put the theories to bed. According to TMZ, they said: 'As previously stated, there are no signs of foul play or anything suspicious about the death'. Hogan was pronounced dead at a hospital less than 90 minutes after medics arrived at his home in Clearwater to answer a call about a cardiac arrest on the morning of July 24, police said. The report said the cause of death was 'natural.' Bubba's allegations include that Hogan's body has already been cremated, somebody could have injected something into the wrestler's dialysis port while he slept to induce a heart attack and questions around why an autopsy wasn't carried out. Bubba, whose real name is Todd Clem, also references the fact that Hogan's wife Sky Daily has links to Scientology and pointed out that Hogan has an estate that he claims to be worth in the region of $40million to $50m. Clem did not offer facts to substantiate his stunning claims, which stem from a report in the Tampa Bay Times from July 31 that says Hogan was 'doing therapy' when he collapsed at his home in Clearwater Beach on July 24. The report says paramedics told staff at Morton Plant Hospital that Hogan had just returned home from surgery and was 'currently waiting to start dialysis'. Clem claims nobody knew the wrestling icon was due to begin dialysis. In a bid to revive him, medics reportedly gave Hogan drugs that can treat excessive levels of potassium, a sign of kidney failure. These can lead to cardiac arrest. Hogan was also given two milligrams of Narcan, the drug that can quickly reverse opioid overdoses. There is no indication that Hogan had overdosed. However, The Tampa Bay Times also revealed the Pinellas County Medical Examiner did not perform an autopsy on Hogan because his death was not deemed to be suspicious. 'There were no signs of foul play or suspicious activity,' Maj. Nate Burnside of the Clearwater Police Department also told reporters. According to his death certificate, Hogan is going to be cremated at the Bay Area Crematory in Clearwater. A specific date for that has not yet been announced. A spokesperson for the medical examiner's office confirmed a request for cremation on July 31, telling Page Six: 'I'm not aware of when Mr. Bollea will be cremated, only that we've received a request for cremation approval.' Bubba and Hogan had a complex relationship. The wrestler was the best man at Bubba and wife Heather's wedding, but was then filmed having sex with her in 2012. In 2016, a Florida jury awarded Hogan $115million and an additional $25million in punitive damages in a lawsuit against Gawker Media because it obtained and posted an excerpt of video of his sexual encounter with Heather. The jury agreed with Hogan's claim that the post violated his privacy. Hogan ended up settling the case for millions less after Gawker filed for bankruptcy. Brooke, meanwhile, was estranged from both of her parents for years before he passed and she has taken herself out of her father's will. She phoned into Bubba's Twitch stream on Tuesday and, when asked for her thoughts on some of his theories, said: 'I do think it's weird that no autopsy was performed. 'Because yes you can have a heart attack, but what was the reason for the heart attack? If he was up and doing breathing exercises then that means the surgery on his heart was a success and it was working. She also added that 'the leukemia out of nowhere hits me as BS' and insisted she never knew of that diagnosis. Brooke continued: 'I would be surprised if a surgeon would work on someone with leukemia or a high blood cell count and not do further investigations. I told my dad "put cameras in your house because one of these b******* could push you down the stairs and nobody would ever know".' She also claimed she told her late father not to marry Sky because of his concerns about her links to Scientology.
