ASEAN TVET dialogue stresses skills, equity, industry link
MELAKA: The ASEAN Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council 4th Regional Policy Dialogue (ATC 4th RPD) has highlighted three fundamental enablers for advancing the sector.
The Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW) said the three key enablers are effective education and training, meeting industry demands for skilled labour, and improving socio-economic standards.
The ministry, in collaboration with the National TVET Council (MTVET), is organising the two-day dialogue themed 'TVET for Rural and Regional Advancement' here, with the main objective of developing comprehensive, actionable strategies and policies to enhance the access, quality, and relevance of TVET, aligned with rural development priorities and inclusive growth.
'The ATC 4th RPD is expected to produce practical recommendations and conclusions to support the development and alignment of national TVET systems with regional aspirations.
'It will also strengthen the role of the ASEAN TVET Council as a key platform for cooperation, coordination, and policy integration across ASEAN,' it said in a statement today.
The statement said the dialogue is held in conjunction with the National TVET Day 2025 celebration, which runs from today until Friday, and Malaysia's chairmanship of ASEAN in 2025.
The dialogue is supported by the ASEAN Secretariat, the German government under the Regional Cooperation on Labour Market Policy and TVET for Twin Transition in ASEAN (RECOTwin) programme, and the Australian government through the Aus4ASEAN Digital Transformation and Future Skills programme.
'The ATC 4th RPD aims to foster regional collaboration, knowledge sharing, and strategic discussions on the role of TVET as a catalyst for the socio-economic transformation of rural and marginalised communities.
'The keynote address was delivered by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who underscored TVET's critical role in driving inclusivity and sustainability, and Malaysia's aspiration to equip the workforce with relevant skills for a dynamic labour market to boost economic growth and social equity,' the statement added.
The dialogue features 29 expert panellists from ASEAN member states, Australia, and UNESCO, comprising policymakers, government officials, industry players, and TVET educators.
The hybrid event is being attended by over 300 participants, both in person and online.

Sabah poised for major industrial expansion
KTC executive director Lau said the strategic location in KKIP will strengthen logistics infrastructure and streamline supply chain operations. KOTA KINABALU: A new integrated industrial hub will soon rise in the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP), aimed at enhancing logistics, warehousing and distribution capacity in Sabah and the wider East Malaysian region. The development, set on a newly acquired 15-acre site worth RM100mil, is expected to increase operational capacity by 40% and create at least 500 new jobs, with priority given to local hires from underprivileged backgrounds. 'This is part of our commitment to support government efforts in tackling poverty and promoting inclusive economic growth,' said Kim Teck Cheong Consolidated Bhd (KTC) executive director, Datuk Dexter Lau. The upcoming facility, to be known as the KTC Industrial Park, will function as the largest fast-moving consumer goods distribution centre in the region, designed to serve markets in Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Indonesia. Lau said the strategic location in KKIP will strengthen logistics infrastructure and streamline supply chain operations, allowing the group to better meet growing market demand. 'Our focus is on long-term growth and operational excellence, and this development marks an important milestone in our five-year expansion plan,' he added. As of June, the company had already recorded over RM1bil in revenue. With the expansion, annual earnings are projected to grow by 50%, reaching up to RM1.6bil. An additional RM10mil investment has also been approved for operations in Sarawak, which Lau said is expected to contribute 10% to overall regional revenue growth, with Sabah expected to add 40% over the next two to three years. Lau added that the company's total workforce is expected to reach 2,000 across Malaysia and Brunei within a year.

Anwar: Govt pays RM486k for Dr M's official visit to Japan
Slug: izhalf HL: Anwar: Govt bears RM486k for Dr M's official visit to Japan Bernama MELAKA: The government bore almost half a million ringgit in costs for former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's trip to Japan to attend the annual Nikkei conference last month, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar said the government had allocated approximately RM486,000 for the visit after receiving a formal application from Dr Mahathir. "There are existing provisions for former prime ministers to apply for government support for official travel, and if the sitting prime minister approves, the government will bear the cost, including for Tun Mahathir, who recently requested to attend the Nikkei conference in Japan. He applied, and I approved it. I believe the delegation comprised around seven people. "People ask me why we paid for him. He is entitled to apply, but the decision lies with the sitting prime minister. I decided to approve the RM486,000 for him to go to Japan. "I just don't want anyone to misunderstand. I don't want to take a negative attitude. Despite his daily criticisms of the government, we still approved his travel application," Anwar told reporters here today. On May 30, Dr Mahathir was reported to have attended and delivered a speech at the annual Nikkei Future of Asia conference, a platform he has attended regularly over the years. In a separate development, Anwar said he was giving time to two cabinet ministers who recently submitted resignation letters, encouraging them to reconsider their decisions. The prime minister said he had received letters from the two ministers applying for leave and resignation, but had only approved their leave for now. "Let them think about it. Personally, I would prefer that they rejoin the cabinet," he said. The ministers in question, Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli and Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, reportedly submitted their resignations following defeats in recent party elections. Anwar was speaking after attending an organisational empowerment seminar and a closed-door meeting with PKR leaders here today. Also present were PKR vice-presidents Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari and Datuk Seri R. Ramanan, secretary-general Senator Fuziah Salleh, Wanita chief Fadhlina Sidek, Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim, and Hang Tuah Jaya division chief Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin. During the seminar, Anwar urged PKR members to heal internal rifts and put aside dissatisfaction following the party polls last month. He also emphasised the need for unity and maturity for the party's greater mission. "Imagine this, I can work with Umno, even hugging it out. Surely, we can move past our internal disagreements too. Let's move on for the bigger agenda," he added.
