Jangpura BJP MLA wants all Delhi landmarks painted saffron—from Red Fort & Qutub Minar to Secretariat
'It is our government, we will do whatever colour we like. Saffron is the colour of mahapurush (great men). We will paint government buildings saffron and will also install saffron flags along with the tricolour,' Marwah told ThePrint Friday.
New Delhi: BJP MLA from Jangpura Tarvinder Singh Marwah has said he would launch a campaign to paint in saffron all national monuments in Delhi including the Qutub Minar, Red Fort and Humayun Tomb, and landmark government buildings such as the Secretariat and Vidhan Sabha.
The 64-year-old leader said he will bring a proposal in the Vidhan Sabha to effectuate this and make a demand from Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. 'I will raise the issue in the assembly for buildings under the Delhi government and will meet Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for the buildings of the central government.'
'Saffron is the colour of God. We want all the buildings in Delhi, including shops, to be painted saffron,' he told ThePrint, adding that in the coming time the whole city will become Ram-maya (drenched in the colour of Lord Ram).
Marwah, who was with the Congress before switching to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 2022, said the campaign to paint the buildings saffron is related to faith. 'This is my personal campaign. My party has no role in this,' he said.

Closure of meat, liquor shops
Marwah has also written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, requesting him to order the closure of all liquor and meat shops along the Kanwar Yatra route in the city. The Kanwar yatra begins from 11 July.
The BJP legislator, a member of the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee, said the shutting of meat and liquor shops is necessary to uphold the sanctity of the annual pilgrimage.
'We appeal that meat and liquor shops on the designated routes of the Kanwar Yatra are temporarily shut so that its sanctity is maintained and there are no untoward incidents,' reads his letter. ThePrint has seen the copy of the letter.
Marwah also wrote to the CM last month for shutting down meat and liquor shops along the Kanwar route.
Meanwhile, reviewing the preparation for the Kanwar Yatra, Culture and Tourism Minister Kapil Mishra said Wednesday the Delhi government has decided to shut meat shops on the Kanwar route.
'The decision on meat shops is a decision of the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). It has been decided that they will remain shut,' Mishra told the media.
But on Thursday, the MCD said there is no provision to shut shops on Kanwar Yatra under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957.

First Monday of Sawan: As spiritual wave sweeps, Yogi orders security, flower showers for Shiv Bhakts
As a spiritual wave swept across Uttar Pradesh on the first Monday of Sawan, the state government decided to felicitate Shiv Bhakts with flower showers and ensure a safe Kanwar Yatra. For representation only (HT File Photo) The holy city of Varanasi echoed with chants of 'Har Har Mahadev' and witnessed devotees coming to worship at Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple since midnight to perform 'Jalabhishek' and offer prayers. Meanwhile, a long queue of devotees was seen at Mankameshwar Temple in the state capital. Similar scenes were there in other cities of the state. Chief minister Yogi Adityanath chaired a high-level meeting reviewing the security of Kawariyas. He asked officials to shower petals on Shiv Bhakts, at key locations to honour the devotees. CM directed the use of public address systems along the route and the continuous broadcast of Shiv bhajans to keep devotees emotionally connected. 'Any attempt to disturb the Yatra must be met with immediate and strict action,' the CM told officials at the meeting. Stating that the safety and convenience of devotees are the top priorities of the state government, the chief minister instructed officials to ensure adequate arrangements along the Yatra route, including cleanliness, medical services, drinking water, canteens, rest areas, and toilets. He laid special emphasis on the safety and comfort of women Kanwariyas, directing the effective deployment of women police personnel. The CM directed 24x7 surveillance of sensitive areas using drone cameras and CCTV, and instructed intelligence agencies to maintain heightened vigilance to prevent any disruption. He instructed officials to set up fully operational medical camps, first aid centres, and deploy ambulances at all major points to ensure a prompt response to any emergency. Emphasising food safety, he directed the Food Safety and Drug Administration, along with local authorities, to conduct regular checks to maintain the quality and purity of food items provided to devotees. The CM appealed to all devotees to observe faith, discipline, and decorum during the Kanwar Yatra. He urged Shiv bhakts to collect holy water from sacred rivers, perform Jalabhishek of Lord Shiva, and extend full cooperation to the administration.

Bittu Bajrangi placed under house arrest ahead of Nuh yatra
Self-styled cow vigilante Raj Kumar, alias Bittu Bajrangi—one of the prime accused in last year's communal violence during the Braj Mandal Jalabhishek Yatra in Nuh—was placed under house arrest in Faridabad till Monday night to prevent his participation in this year's procession. Two armed personnel were deployed outside his residence after police denied him permission to attend the yatra. Raj Kumar, alias Bittu Bajrangi. Bajrangi had approached the Punjab and Haryana high court last week seeking urgent permission to join the yatra, but no hearing date was assigned. He then submitted an undertaking to Nuh and Faridabad police stating he would refrain from making provocative statements or posting controversial content online. Despite this, his request was rejected. The precautionary step came amid heightened security across Nuh after a shrine (mazar) was allegedly vandalised in Sainipura, Tauru, late Sunday night. Authorities suspect the act was intended to disrupt peace ahead of the procession. More than 2,500 police personnel were deployed across the district, with drone surveillance and CCTV monitoring set up at key locations—particularly around Nalhar temple, where suspects had opened fire from hilltops during the 2023 violence. Mobile internet and bulk SMS services were suspended for 24 hours, and the sale of meat was prohibited along the yatra route from Nalhar Mahadev Temple to Jhirkeshwar Mahadev Temple in Ferozepur Jhirka and the Singar Temple in Singar village. Nuh deputy commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena said police responded swiftly to Sunday's incident and held meetings with community stakeholders to maintain calm. 'The situation is completely peaceful. Senior officials were stationed on the ground to ensure law and order,' he said. Meena added that the yatra was held without incident, with devotees offering prayers at multiple temples throughout the district. 'This time, we also stationed police personnel on the hills around Nalhar temple for additional surveillance,' he said. Haryana sports minister Gaurav Gautam, CM Nayab Singh Saini's media advisor Mukesh CL Vashisth, BJP leaders, All India Peace Committee chairman Haji Jaan Mohammad and others welcomed devotees during the procession. Bajrangi, along with another cow vigilante Monu Manesar and Congress MLA Mamman Khan, is among the key accused in the July 31, 2023, communal violence that began in Nuh and spread to Gurugram. The clashes left six people dead, including a home guard, and injured more than 70. Bajrangi has since been barred from entering Nuh without prior permission. Faridabad police spokesperson Yashpal Yadav confirmed that Bajrangi was taken to Saran police station on Sunday evening and gave a written assurance that he would not engage in any activity that could incite tension. Bajrangi later said he had requested to be confined to his home rather than the police station, after which the personnel were posted outside his residence

BJP has ruined UP's education system: Akhilesh
Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav on Monday slammed the Uttar Pradesh government, alleging that its school merger policy is a conspiracy to deprive the children of poor families of education. Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav. (HT file) 'The government's decision to close more than 10,000 primary schools is going to destroy the future of children. BJP spends billions of rupees on its publicity but the government does not have money for schools,' the SP chief alleged in a statement. He also alleged that the UP government has ruined the education system in the state. 'Closing schools is a part of BJP's conspiracy. Children of poor families study in council primary schools. The BJP government wants to deprive the poor of education by closing schools. Education, jobs, employment have never been on its agenda. Closing thousands of schools in the state will have a direct impact on the education of girls. How will the girls of poor families in villages go to school far away from their homes,' Yadav alleged. 'The BJP is ruining the future of the state. It is pushing the state backward in every field, including education. BJP wants the poor, backward, Dalits to stay away from education. If they become educated, they will oppose its wrong policies and ask questions. So, it wants to keep them uneducated,' he further alleged. Earlier on Monday morning, Samajwadi Party workers led by SP leader Jaysingh Pratap Yadav from Amethi and others staged a protest against the government's school merger move at Hazratganj crossing.
