Hans India5 days ago
New Delhi: Digital payments to merchants in India grew nearly 19 per cent year-on-year (YoY) in June to Rs 9,10,000 crore (Rs 9.1 trillion), a new report said on Wednesday.
According to data compiled by Equirus Securities, UPI person-to-merchant (P2M) payments remained the biggest driver, rising 22 per cent YoY to Rs 6.8 trillion, while credit card spends increased 15 per cent YoY to Rs 1.8 trillion.
Debit card spending, however, declined 14 per cent from previous year to Rs 35,300 crore.
UPI-P2M accounted for 74.5 per cent of the total market share in June, while credit cards held 20 per cent.
'Nearly two-thirds of UPI-P2M transactions by value were above Rs 2,000,' according to the report.
The number of active cards in force stayed flat at 11.12 crore during the same time period.
HDFC Bank led with 2.13 lakh new cards, followed by Yes Bank, Federal Bank, SBI Card, and IDFC First Bank.
Year-to-date (YTD), 13.1 lakh cards have been added, as per the report. In terms of market share, HDFC Bank maintained the lead in both cards in force and spending, with 22 per cent and 27.9 per cent shares respectively.
E-commerce continued to dominate credit card spending, accounting for 63.1 per cent of total spends in June.
The average e-commerce spend per card was Rs 10,400 per month, compared to Rs 6,100 at physical point-of-sale (POS) terminals.
Meanwhile, earlier this week, Parliament was informed that over the last six financial years (FY20 to FY25), India has recorded more than 65,000 crore digital transactions, with a total value exceeding Rs 12,000 lakh crore.
Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on July 28, said the government has been working closely with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), fintech companies, banks, and state governments to boost the adoption of digital payments, including in tier-2 and tier-3 cities.

FASTag annual pass from August 15: Save up to Rs 20,000 on highway tolls

From August 15, private car owners can opt for an annual FASTag pass priced at Rs 3,000, offering up to 200 toll-free trips on national highways. Announced by Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari on June 18 via X (formerly Twitter), this initiative aims to ease toll payments, especially for regular highway commuters using non-commercial vehicles such as cars, jeeps and vans. Here's a breakdown of what this means for you and how much you could potentially save. What is the FASTag annual pass? · The pass costs Rs 3,000 and covers up to 200 toll plaza crossings across India's national highway network. · It is valid for one year from the date of activation or until 200 trips are completed, whichever comes first. · Only non-commercial private light motor vehicles (LMVs) such as cars, jeeps, and vans are eligible. · The scheme is especially beneficial for those who use highways regularly and end up paying toll at multiple points within 60 km stretches. · Activation and renewal will be available through the Rajmarg Yatra App, as well as the official websites of NHAI and MoRTH. How much can you save from an annual FasTag pass? · Regular toll charges for cars range between Rs 50 and Rs 120 per trip, depending on the route. · If you make 200 trips a year and pay an average toll of Rs 100 per trip, your total annual toll cost would be Rs 20,000. · With the FASTag pass, you pay just Rs 3,000 for those 200 trips, a saving of Rs 17,000, or 85 per cent. · Even if you only make around 100 trips a year at Rs 80 per trip, you would still save Rs 5,000 compared to paying each time. Why does this matter? · Reduces frequent deductions from FASTag wallets. · Cuts down on disputes and delays at toll booths, especially where toll plazas are less than 60 km apart. · Helps frequent inter-city travellers, daily commuters, and weekend road-trippers save money and time. · Simplifies toll budgeting with a one-time payment for the year. Gadkari called the initiative a 'transformative step' towards seamless, faster, and more economical road travel for private vehicle users. While commercial vehicles are not covered under this scheme, the move is expected to benefit millions of highway users looking for a smoother ride, both financially and practically.

New UPI rules explained: Here's what they mean for your daily transactions

From August 1, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) apps like Paytm, PhonePe, Google Pay and others have started implementing new rules that restrict the number of backend requests users or apps can make in a day. These changes, introduced by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), are designed to ease system congestion and improve the overall reliability of UPI services. Why UPI limits were introduced? NPCI observed that too many non-financial requests, such as repeated balance checks or account fetches were putting unnecessary strain on the UPI system. These actions do not move money, but still require the network's attention, especially during high-traffic periods. The new framework introduces daily limits to keep systems running efficiently. New UPI changes from August 1 · Bank balance checks: Limited to 50 times per app per day. Banks are now required to show your updated balance automatically after every successful transaction to reduce the need for frequent checks. · Linked account views: Restricted to 25 times per day per app. If the app fails to fetch account details, it must ask you to retry manually instead of attempting again on its own. · Autopay mandates: Will now be processed only outside peak hours, i.e., not between 10 am to 1 pm and 5 pm to 9:30 pm. Each mandate will be executed once, with only three retry attempts allowed. · Merchant verification: Platforms can now fetch merchant verification data or security keys only once a day, and only during non-peak hours. · Status checks for payments: These must follow a staggered schedule, as previously advised by NPCI, to avoid spikes in backend traffic. UPI apps must monitor their traffic Apps and banks are now accountable for all automated background activity, whether triggered by the user or not. NPCI has directed platforms to stop blindly forwarding partner requests, especially during high-traffic hours. What happens if new UPI rules are not followed? All UPI apps were required to implement the changes by July 31, 2025. A compliance audit must be submitted to NPCI by August 31, 2025. Failure to comply could result in penalties, limited API access, or a ban on onboarding new users. These steps are expected to make the UPI experience smoother, particularly during times when most users are transacting.
