Bengali row: Noida hotel turns away New Town techie, son
The father claimed the hotel receptionist cancelled his booking—he made reservations through OYO for two nights—claiming the local police station had instructed them not to allow anyone from Bangladesh, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir to stay at hotels till Aug 15 for security reasons. The man told TOI, "The receptionist said the local police instructed them not to allow any guest from Bangladesh, Punjab and Jammu and Kashmir.
I was surprised. I said we were not Bangladeshis but were from West Bengal. But the receptionist said it was the same thing and that he wouldn't let us in," he said.
The father said he made multiple calls to OYO. "The customer care executive finally took the call and said they would refund my amount in 7-10 days. I had no other option but to check into another hotel in Sector 49, far from the arena," he said, adding he had booked the earlier hotel in Sector 44 as it was near the skating rink, where registrations would begin early Wednesday.

An OYO official issued an apology and stated the hotel —Meera Eternity—was removed from the booking platform on Tuesday itself and that an inquiry was initiated. "OYO has neither received or given any such guideline to hotels on its platform. OYO does not promote any form of discrimination..." OYO said in a statement.
Noida DCP Yamuna Prasad told TOI there had been no official instruction from the Noida Police to hotels to deny entry to people from Bengal or any other state. "Hotels are told to check ID and visa documents of people from Bangladesh but there is no directive to disallow stay to even Bangladeshi residents if they have proper papers," said Prasad.

Man kills wife for not serving food on time
Thiruvananthapuram: Police on Thursday arrested a man for hacking his wife to death for allegedly not serving him food on time. The incident took place at Kalliyoor on Wednesday night. Police identified the deceased as Bincy of Kunnathuvila Veedu, Kalliyoor. Her husband, Sunil R, 41, has been booked under Section 103 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for murder. According to police, the crime came to light only on Thursday morning after neighbours came looking for Bincy. The couple's two children, aged 7 and 9, who were in the house at the time, were unaware of the murder. They went to bed early on Wednesday night, and the next morning the accused sent them to school, telling them their mother was sleeping due to fever. After they left, he cleaned the bloodstains on the floor and the machete used in the attack. Sunil then lingered near the house until neighbours discovered her body. He even accompanied them in hospitalizing her. However, during questioning, he confessed to killing her while under the influence of alcohol. Sunil came home at 11pm on Wednesday after work and found Bincy using her mobile phone. He became annoyed that she had not served him food and continued using the phone. This led to a heated argument, and the accused hacked her on the head with a machete," said a police officer. Sunil was a daily-wage worker and Bincy a homemaker. "Sunil was an alcoholic and neighbours said the couple often quarrelled over his drinking," added the officer. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Mandya police intensify crackdown on drug abuse and peddling
Mandya: In the wake of the unearthing of a drug production unit in Mysuru, Mandya district police have intensified their crackdown on drug abuse and peddling. Authorities have already summoned 25 individuals with prior records of drug peddling to monitor their present activities, and more are expected to be questioned in the coming days. Superintendent of police Mallikarjun Baladandi told TOI that soon after the Mysuru incident, they increased vigilance across the district and called known peddlers to check their activities and contacts. So far, they have found no links to the Mysuru cases, but they will continue to monitor the situation, he added. Since Jan this year, Mandya police have booked 52 drug-related cases—22 involving the sale of ganja and the rest related to drug consumption, detected through blood tests. Apart from summoning past offenders, police have convened meetings with station house officers and other officials, instructing them to keep a close watch on warehouses, godowns, and suspicious premises in their areas. Officers have also been asked to increase patrols and engage with local communities to collect intelligence on possible drug activity. The department is placing special emphasis on awareness initiatives. "We will launch district-wide drives to spread awareness and curb drug abuse next week. Schools, colleges, and community groups will be involved to ensure the message reaches every section of society," SP Baladandi said. Police have urged the public to cooperate by providing information on suspicious activities, stressing that community participation is key to eradicating drug abuse in the district. Man sentenced to life imprisonment for beating son to death in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: A city court sentenced a 45-year-old man to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 25,000 after finding him guilty of beating his 14-year-old son to death at his Kashinagar residence in JP Nagar in 2024. Convict Ravi Kumar was arrested on Nov 16, 2024, after a complaint by his wife Shashikala, a garment worker. Shashikala, who had two sons with the man, said Kumar repeatedly beat their son Tejas, a Class IX student, with a cricket bat. Kumar worked as a carpenter and was an alcoholic. "To meet financial needs of the family, I worked as a garment worker. Seeing my difficulty, Tejas earned some money by distributing journals and milk in the morning. He was irregular in his classes, which upset my husband," said the complainant. "The fight continued the next morning and my husband beat him up badly. He rammed his head against the wall. I tried to stop him, but he did not listen... He shouted, 'Let him die'. Tejas collapsed. With the help of one of his friends, I took him to a nearby private hospital, but the doctors declared him brought dead," Shashikala's complaint read. Public prosecutor BH Bhaskar said the statements of Shashikala, also an eyewitness in the case, played a vital role in clinching Kumar's conviction. "Also, the statement from Tejas's friend, a minor boy, saying how he and Shashikala shifted an unconscious Tejas to the hospital where doctors declared him dead, played an important role," Bhaskar said. Kumar, who made futile attempts to secure bail, was present in the court when judge CB Santosh sentenced him to life imprisonment Wednesday.
