Man sentenced to life imprisonment for beating son to death in Bengaluru
Convict Ravi Kumar was arrested on Nov 16, 2024, after a complaint by his wife Shashikala, a garment worker.
Shashikala, who had two sons with the man, said Kumar repeatedly beat their son Tejas, a Class IX student, with a cricket bat. Kumar worked as a carpenter and was an alcoholic. "To meet financial needs of the family, I worked as a garment worker. Seeing my difficulty, Tejas earned some money by distributing journals and milk in the morning.
He was irregular in his classes, which upset my husband," said the complainant.

On the night of Nov 14, Kumar shouted at Tejas for demanding a mobile phone. "The fight continued the next morning and my husband beat him up badly. He rammed his head against the wall. I tried to stop him, but he did not listen... He shouted, 'Let him die'. Tejas collapsed. With the help of one of his friends, I took him to a nearby private hospital, but the doctors declared him brought dead," Shashikala's complaint read.
Public prosecutor BH Bhaskar said the statements of Shashikala, also an eyewitness in the case, played a vital role in clinching Kumar's conviction. "Also, the statement from Tejas's friend, a minor boy, saying how he and Shashikala shifted an unconscious Tejas to the hospital where doctors declared him dead, played an important role," Bhaskar said.
Kumar, who made futile attempts to secure bail, was present in the court when judge CB Santosh sentenced him to life imprisonment Wednesday.
