Anger at buying limit as cult US chain opens its doors in Sydney
Auntie Anne's, the world's largest hand-rolled soft pretzel franchise, made its debut Down Under with the opening of its first store at Westfield Parramatta on Saturday.
But while some Australians lined up more than five hours before its doors opened to get their hands on the doughy treat, the store has been riddled with complications.
During its first few days of trading, demand for the iconic Auntie Anne's pretzels has been so overwhelming, customers can now only buy 3 at a time.
Meanwhile some of those who have been lucky enough to get their chops around the bread-like product have complained that it was 'burnt' and 'didn't taste great'.
Yu-Jin Lee, who along with his business partner Johann Wong has worked with Auntie Anne's to bring the chain to Australia, told news.com.au the store had been inundated with customers and as such has had to take measures to make sure no one is disappointed.
'Each of our pretzels is carefully hand-rolled and baked in small batches by our new kitchen team, who are doing their best to deliver a great experience,' he said.
'As with any handmade process, small variations can occur and with such high demand, every day offers valuable opportunities for our team to grow and finetune their skills.
'To help more people get a taste, we've temporarily set a limit of three pretzels per customer.'
He also apologised to anyone who purchased a pretzel that felt it 'didn't meet expectations' and urged them to 'reach out to us directly'.
'We truly appreciate feedback and would love the opportunity to make it right,' he said.
'We're incredibly grateful for the enthusiastic welcome we've received since opening Auntie Anne's in Sydney and send a heartfelt thank you to everyone who's lined up patiently to enjoy our freshly baked pretzels during this exciting launch week.'
Social media has exploded with videos on the cult chain's recent Sydney opening, though mostly positive, there were some who pointed out there appeared to be 'teething problems' in Parramatta.
'They opened late, there were certain items on the menu that are 'not available' at the moment which was really disappointing. The pretzels were OK, the sticks were the best out of all of them, I'd give them a 5 out of 10 at the moment until they sort some things out,' one disgruntled customer shared on TikTok.
'Have waited 90 minutes in line to find out there's no pretzel bites, despite the fact it's on the menu and on the shop front, they just weren't selling them today,' whinged another.
While another claimed she waited 2 hours only to be sold 'burnt' pretzels.
Auntie Anne's has since responded to the video, stating 'we're still in our early days, but that's no excuse. If you're open to giving us another chance, we'd love to twist your day with some fresh pretzels on us'.
Popular Melbourne food bloggers @nectoriouspapi and @DubEatsEverything defended the chain's new venture, calling for Aussies to 'cut them some slack'.
'It's hard when you first open and have massive lines, what are you meant to do?' DubEatsEverything told news.com.au.
'They only have a very small oven … and at $5 for a pretzel, it's pretty reasonably priced.'
Nectorious Papi agreed, stating: 'People need to cut them some slack as the demand is higher than they predicted. It's expected when something new that has never been in Australia before opens.'
Mostly though, people were delighted with their pretzels, which cost between $5.80 and $6.50 dependent on which flavour purchased.
Lines filled Westfield Parramatta's top floor on Saturday as hungry Aussies waited hours in order to get their hands on Original, Cinnamon, Sweet Almond and Pepperoni flavoured pretzels.
One social media user even claimed that the queue wrapped all the way around to the train station outside.
Despite the overwhelming demand, more than 1000 pretzels were sold on opening day, and the new bakery has continued to draw large crowds since.

Prime minister plays down tax reform opportunity at productivity meeting
The prime minister has talked down the prospect of major tax reform emerging from its productivity round table, less than a fortnight from the forum at which the treasurer has said nothing will be off the table. Tax policy will be a key item on the agenda at the meeting, with union bosses and welfare groups already calling for changes to the politically-fraught negative gearing and capital gains tax breaks, while business groups have separately backed the Productivity Commission's recommendations for a cut to company tax rates. Treasurer Jim Chalmers has repeatedly said he would not rule things in or out before the round table, billed as a contest of ideas as the government seeks to increase productivity and return the budget to sustainable footing. But Mr Albanese on Thursday played down the prospect of major tax reform emerging from the forum in the short-term, flagging he was focused on what the government has already announced. "The only tax policy we're implementing is the one we took to the election," he told reporters in Melbourne. "People can put forward whatever idea they want, and what you'll see is five or six ideas coming forward a day. That's a good thing ... It's not government policy, government policy is decided around a cabinet table." The comments do not rule out the prospect that new taxes could be implemented after the next election, similar to how the government introduced its proposed tax on large super accounts last term. In June the treasurer expressed his hopes for the three day summit, telling the National Press Club that "no sensible progress can be made on productivity, resilience or budget sustainability without proper consideration of more tax reform". A day before the prime minister's comments, in response to a question about negative gearing and capital gains tax changes, Mr Chalmers reiterated that he didn't want to "get in the habit of knocking off ideas before we get in the room". "I want people to feel like their contributions are valued because they are," he said. But he also noted the government has not changed its position on tax and that any policy would be decided in a "considered, methodical way" though cabinet. Mr Chalmers has said he is seeking consensus from participants, though the ABC understands there will be no joint communique at the round table's conclusion. "I don't pretend that when I stand up ... on the Thursday night of that week that we'll have solved every challenge in our economy or that we'll have fully formed, fully costed, very specific policy outcomes," he said on Wednesday. "It's not about replacing the important decision-making functions of ministers. It's about testing and teasing out the next steps which build on the substantial agenda that we're already delivering and rolling out." Labor took its plan to increase taxes on people with super balances over $3 million to the election and in the days leading up to the start of the campaign passed a "modest" tax cut for all workers. The treasurer has asked that any proposals brought to the forum — to be held at Parliament House from August 19 to 21 — must be budget-neutral or budget-positive. Liberal senator James Paterson on Wednesday said it was clear the prime minister had reigned in his treasurer. "I thought it was very pointed the other day when the prime minister said that just because this is a meeting in the cabinet room doesn't mean it's subsuming the role of the cabinet," he told Sky News. "You don't earn a mandate from a hand-picked group of small experts meeting in the cabinet room. You earn a mandate by taking policies to an election, and this government has no mandate for any tax increases."

Banks lagged, but retailers and real estate led the winners – those rate-sensitive beasts that perk up fast when rumours of rate cuts start floating in from Wall Street. And float in they did. Overnight, the Fed Reserve's Neel Kashkari cracked the door open, saying a rate cut might arrive 'soon'. In the mining space, iron ore names like Rio Tinto (ASX:RIO) and Fortescue (ASX:FMG) came under pressure after UBS walked back its call on China's property rebound. Analyst John Lam now reckons the turnaround won't hit until mid-to-late 2026, later than the early 2026 bounce he tipped just a few months ago. Without fresh stimulus, the sales slump is likely to linger. That's bad news for iron ore demand, and markets know it. This is where things stood at about 12:50pm AEST: In the large caps space, the embattled market operator, ASX (ASX:ASX), took a spectacular nosedive, down 9%, after Treasurer Jim Chalmers suggested he would move to end its long-standing monopoly. The timing couldn't have been worse. ASX had just told investors it's about to book up to $35 million in unexpected compliance and legal costs next financial year, as ASIC pokes deeper into its governance and systems. Still in large caps, AMP (ASX:AMP) rose 1% despite revealing a statutory net profit of $98 million, down nearly 5% year-on-year. One notable move this morning was gaming giant Light & Wonder (ASX:LNW), which announced it will officially delist from Nasdaq and go all-in on the ASX. After mulling it over for months, the Las Vegas-based company says the ASX will become its sole listing by November 2025. LNW's shares plunged 5%. WA Teal backs $3300 handout, GST hike scheme as key economic driver
Teal independent Kate Chaney has floated a radical plan to hand everyone $3,300 a year in exchange for a hike in the GST. Ms Chaney has been working with Australian economist Richard Holden on a proposal to raise the GST from 10 to 15 per cent, and apply the tax to education, food and health. In exchange for the tax hike, every adult would be paid $3300 - effectively wiping out the GST expenses on someone's first $22,000 of spending. Ms Chaney and Professor Holden's plan has been submitted to the federal government to be considered at the productivity-focused economic roundtable, a summit to be held in Canberra from August 19 to 21. 'GST is an efficient tax – it is hard to avoid – and with lower and middle-income groups potentially better off under this proposal, it can be progressive,' Ms Chaney said. 'Unlike personal income tax, it doesn't hamper productivity. 'Intergenerational inequity is built into our tax system - younger generations are facing the growing burden of funding an ageing population and will bear the cost of future interest payments to cover the structural deficit forecast for the next decade.' The WA MP's plan has been costed and would raise an additional $95.2bn for the government in its first year of operation, minus the $3300 rebate to every adult. Low and middle-income earners would be up to $371 better off, but the top-20 per cent of earners would be $2200 worse off. All that leaves the government with an additional $24bn a year. The Prime Minister and Treasurer have been hesitant in their language around GST reform leading up to the economic roundtable meetings. 'I expect that there'll be a whole range of ideas put forward, much of which is contradictory with each other,' Anthony Albanese said this week. 'It doesn't mean that they're government decisions we're making, because they're not.' But Mr Albanese was more explicit in his language on Thursday. 'The only tax policy that we're implementing is the one that we took to the election,' he said. While the current GST scheme is considered regressive, Professor Holden's plan is pitched as progressive. 'I'm a supporter of progressive taxation,' Mr Albanese told Sky News in July. 'Consumption taxes, by definition, are regressive in their nature. So that's something that you know doesn't fit with the agenda.' Parliamentary Budget Office costings of Professor Holden and Ms Chaney's scheme show the bottom 60 per cent of income earners would be better with the GST hike and $3300 rebate. 'Our proposal would make our taxation system more efficient, make our economy more dynamic and provide the impetus for productivity growth,' Professor Holden said. 'It is widely accepted that the GST is an efficient tax, but it is thought to be regressive. 'This plan shows that it doesn't have to be that way. By providing every adult Australian with a $22,000 GST-free threshold the GST can be both efficient and progressive.' The government has promoted the roundtable meetings as being focused on productivity. The Australian Council of Social Services says the country's lagging productivity is widening inequality. In the council's submission to the roundtable, chief executive Cassandra Goldie calls for reform to the tax system to raise more revenue, reduce inequality and drive action to address climate change. 'For too long now, people with plenty have been showered with tax breaks that pull investment away from productive purposes and rob essential public services of the revenue they need,' Dr Goldie said. The council is advocating for changes to employment opportunities and streamlining income support. 'The extra revenue we need to fund care and community services, schools, and an income support system that protects people from poverty must come from those with the most capacity to pay - not those doing it toughest,' Dr Goldie said.
