How Mavericks, Knicks could discuss Jason Kidd trade after Tom Thibodeau firing

The post How Mavericks, Knicks could discuss Jason Kidd trade after Tom Thibodeau firing appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Knicks recently fired head coach Tom Thibodeau. The move was surprising as Thibodeau coached the big-market team for five years and led them to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2025. Nevertheless, speculation has already surfaced around who the Knicks' next head coach will be. Coaches without jobs such as Michael Malone have been mentioned for the position, but could the Knicks pursue a coach who is currently employed by an NBA team such as Jason Kidd of the Dallas Mavericks? Advertisement Kidd, who has led the Mavs to the Western Conference Finals twice since taking over the head coaching position in Dallas, signed a multi-year contract extension with the team in 2024. The move seemingly suggested that Kidd would remain in Dallas for the foreseeable future. The Knicks are rumored to have interest in Kidd, though. If New York is serious about bringing in the Mavs head coach, perhaps a trade offer can be made. Coaches can be traded in the NBA, but it would be fairly complicated. Details of possible Knicks-Mavericks Jason Kidd head coach trade Head coaches have indeed been traded in the past. For example, the Boston Celtics traded Doc Rivers to the Los Angeles Clippers for a first round pick in 2013. Stan Van Gundy took over head coaching duties for the Orlando Magic in 2007, and Van Gundy's former team, the Miami Heat, received a second round pick in return. In 2014, Kidd himself was traded from the Brooklyn Nets to the Milwaukee Bucks for two second round picks. Advertisement The Rivers deal could provide the blueprint for a possible Knicks-Mavercks trade. Rivers still had three years on his contract with the Celtics but ended up signing a new three-year deal with the Clippers following the trade. Players can't be traded in coach-led deals, though, so don't expect the Mavs to acquire someone like Karl-Anthony Towns for Jason Kidd. If a deal were to come to fruition, the Knicks would likely send the Mavericks a first or second round pick. Since Kidd still has a couple of years left on his contract, Dallas would probably desire a first round pick. Will the Mavs consider trading Kidd? Jerome Miron-Imagn Images In all reality, Dallas probably won't part ways with Jason Kidd. There has already been no shortage of change in Dallas over the past year with the Mavs trading Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a first round pick in February. Advertisement Dallas is turning to a new core of players. The team is hopeful that Kidd can lead the way as Anthony Davis, Klay Thompson and Kyrie Irving (once he returns from injury) prepare for the future. The possibility of selecting Cooper Flagg — as the Mavericks won the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery — provides an extra layer of excitement. Moving on from Kidd would add yet another transition to be made for a franchise that is still recovering from losing Doncic to the Lakers. One has to imagine that Dallas will keep Kidd for at least one more season before seriously considering a new direction at the head coaching position. With that being said, Doncic wasn't expected to be traded and the Mavs made that decision. Anything can happen. If general manager Nico Harrison wants to make another change, then perhaps a deal will be discussed. However, Harrison seems to respect and trust Kidd, so a trade still appears to be unlikely. NBA rumors: Knicks expected to make Jason Kidd request after Tom Thibodeau firing

The post NBA rumors: Knicks expected to make Jason Kidd request after Tom Thibodeau firing appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Knicks have been linked to Jason Kidd ever since they parted ways with head coach Tom Thibodeau. Could the Dallas Mavericks current head coach end up in New York next season? Although the possibility of Kidd leaving the Mavs this summer still seems unlikely, NBA insider Marc Stein reports that the Knicks are expected to request permission from the Mavs to interview him. Advertisement 'The New York Knicks are expected to formally request permission to speak to the Dallas Mavericks' Jason Kidd about their coaching vacancy in coming days, league sources say,' Stein wrote for The Stein Line. A Jason Kidd-led trade between the Mavericks and Knicks is technically possible. Coach trades have happened in the past. However, the chances of Dallas moving on from the head coach still appear to be slim. The Mavs, of course, traded Luka Doncic away in February. The move brought immense change to the entire franchise. Dallas would create another massive ripple effect by changing head coaches this summer. It remains to be seen if the Mavericks will entertain the Knicks' expected request. A number of potential candidates have already been mentioned as possible options for New York, but it certainly appears as if Jason Kidd is on the team's radar. Advertisement The Knicks are fresh off an Eastern Conference Finals appearance. New York should be able to compete at a high level once again during the 2025-26 campaign. Finding their next head coach is the franchise's current goal, though. Kidd has led Dallas to the Western Conference Finals twice and the NBA Finals once during his time with the Mavs. He managed to lead the team to the NBA Play-In Tournament this past season despite Dallas' plethora of injuries and the Doncic trade. It is worth mentioning that Kidd landed a multi-year contract extension with the Mavericks in 2024. With Kidd still under contract, trying to convince him to leave Dallas will prove to be a challenge. The Knicks' rumored potential pursuit of Jason Kidd will be a situation to closely monitor. Kidd is probably going to end up staying in Dallas for the 2025-26 season, but anything can happen. NBA rumors: More evidence that Mavericks will deny Knicks' Jason Kidd request

The post NBA rumors: More evidence that Mavericks will deny Knicks' Jason Kidd request appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Dallas Mavericks are expected to deny the New York Knicks' request to interview Mavs head coach Jason Kidd, according to The Athletic's James L Edwards III. Advertisement Edwards cited 'multiple league sources' in reporting that when the Knicks make an official request, which a Mavericks source purportedly said has not come, that Dallas will turn it down, in effect forcing the Knicks' coaching search to move on from Kidd, who has two years left on his contract with the Mavericks. New York reportedly started eyeing Kidd after firing Tom Thibodeau, who led the Knicks to their first Eastern Conference Finals since 1999. Following Thibodeau's firing, The Athletic reported acrimony within the team's roster, with much of the anger reportedly being directed at Thibodeau and Karl-Anthony Towns, who joined the Knicks via a trade the day before training camp. After Thibodeau's dismissal, the Knicks were expected to target a former player or veteran coach who, in theory, could help the Knicks reach the NBA Finals and win the organization's first championship since 1973. However, there are few coaches of that ilk in general and even fewer who are available. 'Former Denver Nuggets head coach Michael Malone, a champion, is the biggest name on the market with championship experience. Malone, like Thibodeau, is a very good coach, but he shares many tendencies and traits with Thibodeau,' Edwards wrote of the Jason Kidd alternatives. 'Former Sacramento Kings head coach Mike Brown is an experienced name out there, as well. Former Memphis Grizzlies head coach Taylor Jenkins is, too. Ex-Los Angeles Lakers Lakers head coach Darvin Ham and former Charlotte Hornets head coach James Borrego could also be of interest. They are all good coaches and have had various degrees of success, though only Malone has won a championship as a head coach among that group. Advertisement 'Would any of those names be clear-cut upgrades over Thibodeau? Not on paper, at least.' Kidd, who led the Mavericks to the Western Conference Finals in his first season with the team in 2022, also led the Mavs to the Finals in 2024. His best player, Luka Doncic, was traded midway through the 2024-25 season, though, and Kidd was reportedly not aware or necessarily onboard with the controversial trade. Still, the former superstar point guard has little recourse for getting out of Dallas — if he even wants to do so — and will likely have to wait out the remainder of his deal or be fired before then.
