Eve Jobs and Harry Charles marry in ‘quaint corner' of the Cotswolds

Times4 days ago
Even billionaires can't make the sun shine. But as guests gathered for the wedding of the Apple heiress, Eve Jobs, to the British Olympic equestrian Harry Charles late on Saturday afternoon, the grey clouds finally started to lift over the Cotswold hamlet.
The usually tranquil roads were busy as guests arrived in Mercedes vans at the small medieval parish church of St Michael and All Angels in Great Tew. Nine bridesmaids, including Jessica Springsteen, daughter of Bruce and a show-jumping champion, wore crimson gowns to match the 5ft balls of roses decorating the outside of the church.
The bride herself sneaked in via a secret entrance to avoid the photographers outside. Other guests included the actor Callum Turner, 35, and the chef Ruth Rogers, 76, who was followed into the church by a delivery man carrying a stack of pizzas.
The bride, 27, is a Stanford graduate, equestrian and model, as well as the youngest daughter of Steve Jobs, co-founder of Apple, who died in 2011 from pancreatic cancer.
Jobs, named by the society magazine Tatler as one of its new generation of It Girls, and Charles, 26, who won a gold medal at the Paris Olympics last year, began dating in 2022 and became engaged last September. Theirs is a 'nepo baby' love match: the groom is the son of Peter Charles, also an equestrian, who was in the British team that won gold at the 2012 London Olympics.
Guests at the reception included Kamala Harris, the former US vice-president, who has been friends with the bride's mother, Laurene Powell Jobs, for more than 20 years. The billionaire philanthropist backed her failed run for the US presidency last year. Other guests included Jony Ive, who met Steve Jobs at Apple, where they ate lunch together almost every day.
The lavish reception was held at the private members' club and hotel Estelle Manor, where Sir Elton John performed for the newlyweds and their guests for a reported £1 million fee. All the manor's 107 rooms were booked by guests, while other friends stayed at Soho Farmhouse, where the Duchess of Sussex, then plain Meghan Markle, had her hen party in 2018.
Although the couple paid the same fee — £675 — as any other betrothed couple to marry in the church, the estimated cost of the wedding was £5 million.
Jobs grew up in Palo Alto in California. Despite the high cost of the wedding, she is not expected to receive a hefty inheritance. Speaking to The New York Times after her husband's death, Laurene Powell Jobs said: 'I'm not interested in legacy wealth building, and my children know that … Steve wasn't interested in that. If I live long enough, it ends with me.'
The couple's nuptials have disturbed the bucolic atmosphere of the area this weekend, with ex-military personnel setting up hazel hurdle screens outside the church gates and security staff parking their SUVs on narrow lanes.
This part of the Cotswolds is home to Sir David and Lady Beckham, the actress Donna Air, who is in the process of selling her £3 million house, and Ellen DeGeneres, the talk show host, who moved to the UK with her wife, Portia de Rossi, to escape the US during President Trump's second term.
The music mogul Simon Cowell and his fiancée, Lauren Silverman, also live nearby, and while riding their e-bikes on Saturday afternoon they stopped outside the Quince and Clover café to take photos with fans. Silverman, 48, whose friends, the hospitality entrepreneurs Sharan and Eiesha Pasricha, own Estelle Manor, said that the area appealled to Americans — including herself — because their privacy can be maintained. Cowell, 65, congratulated the newlyweds. 'I wish them the best of luck — it's a beautiful place for it.'
Harris, 60, spent Wednesday night at The Bull in Charlbury as a part of a private party ahead of the wedding. The Bull, a 15th-century pub which was last month crowned the UK's best, is now owned by James Gummer and Phil Winser, who also run The Pelican gastropub in Notting Hill. The pair grew up nearby and both had their first pints at The Bull, and their return has drawn a famous crowd to the pub.
Some locals feel uncomfortable, however, at the way their charming country town has been increasingly commandeered by the celebrity set. The reality TV star Kourtney Kardashian was also in the Cotswolds on Saturday, posting a gallery of pictures on Instagram including one of Estelle Manor.
David Jenkins, 19, an apprentice surveyor who has lived in Charlbury for his entire life, said: 'The success of The Bull is really good for the community, but I think this is my best description of the reality: I was in Austria and I described where I lived. I said 'you know Soho Farmhouse, I live 20 mins from there?' and they said: 'Ah, you know The Bull?' It's famous but maybe for the wrong reasons. I see all the security around and think, Charlbury has changed.'
Harry, 21, has also lived in Charlbury all his life and worked at Soho Farmhouse as a waiter and at The Bull for two and a half years, before he left to pursue a career in photography.
'I've seen Becks [and] Margot Robbie, and Boris Johnson had his New Year's Eve party here [at The Bull],' Harry said. 'I just left but apparently for this most recent event [with Kamala Harris] everyone had to sign an NDA. I never had to sign an NDA before … Charlbury as an area has changed a lot. I dislike that it's been heavily Americanised, it's lost its charm.'
Others welcomed the global spotlight landing on this quaint corner of the Cotswolds. Natalie Walsh, 54, who manages a healthcare department in a prison, said: 'It's a perfect place to get married if you're rich and you like horses. I think sometimes the negativity around it is just envy.'

Insiders reveal Kelly Osbourne's final promise to Ozzy

Hidden behind her father Ozzy's trademark round sunglasses , Kelly Osbourne fought to keep her composure as she held up her grieving mother. With her arms around her for support, Kelly watched as a heartbroken Sharon crouched down to place a single rose on a mound of floral tributes in front of thousands of fans who had lined the streets of Birmingham to pay their respects to the Prince of Darkness on Wednesday. Clearly overwhelmed by the crowds, Kelly took a moment as she hugged her brother Jack at the Black Sabbath Bridge site which fast became a memorial for the beloved heavy metal icon after his death, aged 76, last week. It was a particularly poignant moment for Kelly, 40, whose stoicism was a nod to her late father and the touching promise she had made him. 'The last few days have been a tough ride, but Kelly has been focused on executing plans with her mum,' an insider told the Daily Mail. 'Of course there have been tears, but she promised her dad - who openly spoke about not wanting people to mourn but rather celebrate his life - that she would not crumble in public.' The Black Sabbath legend 'always pushed them to 'celebrate what people have done in life, not [expletive] worry about what's next,' and his daughter has embraced his ethos. However, while Kelly has been trying her best to do exactly what her rocker father would have wanted, she is worried about her mother. Those close to the family are said to be extremely 'concerned about the impact this is having on Sharon,' adding that 'she and Ozzy were such a unique couple [and] them being apart it is heartbreaking'. Insiders previously disclosed to the Daily Mail the growing concerns for Sharon, 72, who has dealt with her own health issues over the years, including a colon cancer diagnosis in 2002 that led to surgery and chemotherapy. The music manager, who has been vocal about her life-long struggle with body image issues, also recently revealed she has struggled to gain weight after stopping popular weight-loss drug Ozempic. Sharon and Ozzy had a tumultuous, high-profile relationship that was well-documented by the media and their reality TV show, The Osbournes. The couple first met in 1970 when Sharon - the daughter of Ozzy's then manager -was only 18. At the time, he was married to his first wife Thelma, with whom he had two children, Louis and Jessica. After Ozzy left Black Sabbath, Sharon took over as his manager, and their epic love story began, with a wedding in Hawaii on July 4, 1982. They weathered countless affair allegations - one of which pushed Sharon to overdose - and celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary on July 4, one day before Ozzy's farewell concert, Back to the Beginning. But 'Kelly will now be there for Sharon,' because of the 'very unique bond' she shared with her father. The Mama I'm Coming Home singer previously told Rolling Stone they were 'like two peas in a pod' and gushed about their unbreakable bond, admitting, 'If I've got a favorite kid, it's Kelly' while joking that his other children knew how he felt. One of Ozzy's biggest dreams was that Kelly would find love like her brother Jack, who married his second wife Aree Gearhart 14 months after welcoming their daughter Maple. Jack, 39, is also a father to daughters Pearl, 11, Andy, seven, and Minnie, five, from his first marriage to Lisa Stelly. 'Ozzy was Kelly's biggest champion in her career and in love,' the insider said, adding while he might be remembered as a 'tough rock star, he was really an emotional teddy bear when it came to the kids.' 'One of his hopes was always that Kelly would find the right partner and fulfil her dream to start a family,' they said. 'For years she had been the doting auntie to Jack's babies and as aunt and granddad they had enjoyed that experience together.' Kelly's partner Sid Wilson, 48, a member of the band Slipknot, proposed at the end of her father's final gig as a fitting farewell. They first met when Kelly was 13 and Sid was 20 during Ozzfest, the heavy metal festival founded by her parents. The loved up couple confirmed their relationship in early 2022, after knowing each other for more than two decades. Just months later, they announced they were expecting their first child. Their son, Sidney, arrived in November 2022. 'When Sid got together with Kelly and they had their son, there was huge joy for Oz,' the insider continued, adding that during his toughest days of feeling unwell and in pain, spending time with his grandson and Kelly helped keep his spirits up and 'bolstered the bond' with his beloved daughter. 'He used to sing to Sidney and play silly games,' they said. 'This was a huge comfort for Kelly, who saw her dad's physical state declining.' Now all eyes will be on Kelly's son, who Ozzy proudly declared 'could become the one to follow him into music'.

The hit song lyrics that Mike Posner says aren't ‘true anymore'

Singer Mike Posner has disowned the lyrics of his 2016 hit song "I Took a Pill in Ibiza", as 'none of them are true anymore'. The 37-year-old musician, whose track topped the UK charts for four weeks, originally wrote the song after taking ecstasy with DJ Avicii in Ibiza, opening with the line: 'I took a pill in Ibiza to show Avicii I was cool'. Posner expressed pride in his personal transformation over the past 11 years, emphasising self-love and a shift away from behaviours he once engaged in to seek approval. He detailed overcoming significant physical and emotional challenges, such as climbing Mount Everest, leading to his healthiest relationship. The song generated controversy upon its release in 2016 due to its drug references, drawing criticism from Ibiza tourism chiefs and prompting questions about the BBC's decision to playlist it.

Elton John and Spin̈al Tap release new version of Stonehenge – and correct stage prop disaster

Elton John and Spin̈al Tap have joined forces on a new version of the band's song Stonehenge – and have finally corrected one of the great scenery-based mishaps in classic rock. The song, performed in the 1984 rock-mockumentary This Is Spin̈al Tap, is at the heart of one of the film's most cherished scenes: when the band, having made a mistake when commissioning an 18ft Stonehenge stage prop, have to make do with an 18in version being lowered from the rafters. After some hired dwarves caper around it, the band's David St Hubbins complains that they looked likely to crush it underfoot. No such problems with the new version made for the long-awaited sequel Spın̈al Tap II: The End Continues, which will be released 12 September in the US and UK (and 25 September in Australia). In the scene, released today along with a recording of the song on streaming services, the band put in a considerably more triumphant performance, complete with full-sized standing stones and the return of the dwarves. Appearing in a cloak from beneath the stage is Elton John, who takes over the lead vocal, singing lyrics such as 'Stonehenge, where a man's a man / and the children dance to the pipes of Pan' with the requisite po-faced grandeur. John is one of a number of starry cameos in the film, along with Paul McCartney, Questlove, Metallica's Lars Ulrich and more. Michael McKean reprises his role as St Hubbins alongside Christopher Guest as Nigel Tufnel and Harry Shearer as Derek Smalls, heading up a supporting cast filled with British comedy stars such as Nina Conti, Chris Addison and Kerry Godliman. The film will have the documentary film-maker Marty DiBergi (played by Rob Reiner) following the group as they prepare for a final reunion show. The first trailer was released earlier this week. An accompanying soundtrack album has also been announced. Elton John will appear again on Flower People, while McCartney joins them for Cups and Cakes, and country music couple Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood perform Big Bottom.
