Move over, Mario. This cow is Nintendo's new star.
These characters have been racing one another in iterations of the Mario Kart game series since 1992, with no real storyline other than who can come in first place. But from the moment the first trailers for the Switch 2 console and the Mario Kart World game were released in April, fans were abuzz that a new favourite had entered the race: a cow.
Fascination with Cow, as the character is known, only grew after the console and game went on sale last month. She has become Mario Kart World 's breakout star, validated by her leading role in popular videos on Instagram and TikTok.
One Instagram reel, featuring the cow rocking back and forth on a go-kart to the beat of Mooo! by Doja Cat, has been viewed 1.9 million times. Another has her showboating on a motorcycle to La Vaca ( The Cow ), the 2000 merengue hit by Mala Fe.
Both videos are the creation of Jorge Martinez of McAllen, Texas, who said he was excited about the cow from the moment he first saw the trailer for the game.
'Oh, I lost it,' he said. 'I wasn't even thinking about memes. I was just thinking about playing as a cow .'
But Martinez, whose grandparents kept cows on their ranch in Mexico, said the inspiration for memes hit him quickly once he noticed how easy it was to send footage from his Switch 2 console to his phone.
'I was like, why don't I just make a dumb video of the cow?' he said.
Sergio Ospina of Bogotá, Colombia, was similarly inspired. He shared a reel of himself performing a loose interpretation of a merengue dance in front of his TV, also to La Vaca , while he plays as the cow.
'This is why I bought the Switch 2,' the text of the video says in Spanish. The video, posted in collaboration with a Colombian toy store, has been viewed 376,000 times.
In making Mario Kart World the premier launch title for the Switch 2, Nintendo gave the enduring race game series an upgrade by allowing up to 24 players to roam off track in an open world. The decision to elevate the cow, previously a background figure, into a playable character was another change that fans swiftly latched onto.
Nintendo declined to make anyone available for an interview. The game's developers said in a Q&A on the company's website that they were working on a course for a new game that was set on a ranch, and looking for new characters to add, when someone produced a sketch of a smiling cow driving a small truck.
'One of the designers came up with that silly sketch of Cow cruising along, and I thought to myself, 'This is it!'' one of the developers, Masaaki Ishikawa, said.
'The character designer quickly put together a prototype of Cow that could race,' Ishikawa added, 'and surprisingly it didn't feel out of place at all. So we thought maybe we could include other obstacle characters' as racers. That led to the introduction of Cheep Cheep, a red fish, and Pokey, a cactus, as playable characters, he said.
Neither has captured the public's imagination quite like the cow, however.
For Martinez, Mario Kart has always been about having fun and playing with his friends. He appreciates that Nintendo, rather than worrying about having an elaborate storyline or true-to-life graphics, has put a premium on keeping joy in the game.
The cow, he said, exemplifies that.
'The silly idea of having a cow in there, it's just kind of like a victory,' he said. 'It's just good fun.' – ©2025 The New York Times Company

'Naked Gun' co-stars Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson are reportedly dating
Baywatch icon Pamela Anderson and Taken star Liam Neeson are in a 'budding romance in the early stages' after striking up a connection on their upcoming cop comedy, according to People. Photo: AP Naked Gun co-stars Pamela Anderson and Liam Neeson are each giving love another shot — and apparently they're doing it together. Baywatch icon Anderson and Taken star Neeson are in a 'budding romance in the early stages' after striking up a connection on their upcoming cop comedy, according to People . A source told the magazine that the actors are 'smitten with each other.' Neither representatives for Anderson, 58, or Neeson, 73, immediately responded Wednesday to The Times' request for comment. The pair of actors, who play love interests in Akiva Schaffer's latest feature, have been singing each other's praises for months but only sparked dating speculation in recent weeks. In the November 2024 edition of People , Anderson and Neeson talked about their on-screen chemistry and their mutual respect. Neeson told the magazine, 'with Pamela, first off, I'm madly in love with her,' before detailing her work ethic and sense of humor. In turn, Anderson told People at the time that she thought her co-star was 'the perfect gentleman' and was honoured to share the screen with him. In Shaffer's 'Naked Gun' reboot, Neeson stars as Frank Drebin Jr. continuing the legacy of his father, the main character of the original films starring Leslie Nielsen. Anderson, who had a buzz-worthy turn in The Last Showgirl earlier this year, stars as femme fatale Beth Davenport. As promotion for the comedy ramped up in recent months, the stars shared more insight about their dynamic, on- and off-screen. Anderson spoke to Entertainment Weekly in May about bonding with Neeson. 'Our chemistry was clear from the start,' she told the outlet. She added that during filming, they shared a love for 'literature and a good laugh,' and baked goods. The model-actor said she would share her home-baked bread, cookies and muffins with her co-star. Elsewhere in her conversation with EW, Anderson said, 'our relationship stayed 'professionally romantic'' throughout the process. The stars looked especially fond of each other as they hit the red carpet in recent weeks for the film's various premieres in the United Kingdom, New York and Berlin. On Tuesday, the duo appeared on the Today Show and leaned heavily into those dating rumours. In an Instagram post promoting their spot on the morning show, Anderson and Neeson pretend to get caught in the middle of a steamy moment. During their Today interview, Anderson and Neeson jokingly took offense when anchor Craig Melvin asked: 'Are you two an item?' 'Craig,' Neesom says, acting disappointed. 'I don't understand the question,' Anderson responds, smiling at her co-star. Neeson continues to respond to Melvin, explaining 'we met on set and we discovered we had a lovely, budding chemistry... as two actors.' He added: 'And it was like, 'oh, this is nice.' Let's not mould this. Let's just let it breathe and that's what we did.' After Melvin threw Neeson's answer back at him, the actor suggested the morning news personality was stirring the pot, moving his arms in a circle. Though she kept mostly tight-lipped about the relationship on the Today Show Anderson said in an Instagram post on Tuesday,'love is in the air.' Oscar-winning Schindler's List star Neeson was previously married to British actor Natasha Richardson, who died in September 2014. They share two sons. Anderson has been married several times. Her first marriage was to rocker Tommy Lee; they were married twice and share two sons. Country rocker Kid Rock, poker player Rick Salomon and builder and bodyguard Dan Hayhurst are also her ex-husbands. – Los Angeles Times/Tribune News Service

All 8 Members Of Girls' Generation Reunite For Tiffany's Birthday & 18th Anniversary
While all members of Girls' Generation (SNSD/소녀시대) have gone their solo ways, the group still finds time to meet up and showcase their close bond. Recently, the renowned girl group reunited to celebrate two joyous occasions, evoking excitement among fans. Earlier today (1st August 2025, Friday), member Tiffany Young (티파니 영) shared a post on Instagram, revealing that the group recently reunited to celebrate her birthday and the group's upcoming 18th anniversary. The singer, who turns 35 years old today, captioned the post, 'yay its august', highlighting her glee at the new month because August is filled with important dates for her and her groupmates because their anniversary falls on 5th August. The post includes photos of all eight members celebrating Tiffany's birthday and their anniversary at an undisclosed restaurant. There are also selfies of the girls, showcasing their sister-like bond. In one video shared in the post, the members were singing the birthday song for Tiffany. As she prepared to blow out the candles on her pancakes, the singer said to her fellow members, 'Thank you, guys. I love you.' SONEs have reacted to the post, voicing excitement over Girls' Generation's reunion. Many said the gathering showcased their close relationship, despite no longer being active in a group. Others are also hoping the reunion could lead to a possible group comeback. It's worth noting that while the girl group is inactive, they haven't disbanded. However, releasing new music may be difficult as most members have left SM Entertainment. The last time Girls' Generation made a comeback was in 2022, as part of their 15th anniversary celebrations. They also held a special live event in September of that same year to celebrate the occasion with fans. The group also released a remake of The Grace's 'My Everything' on 14th February 2025 for a special album celebrating SM Entertainment's 30th anniversary. However, there are no plans for a group comeback in 2025. While we wait for good news from the girls, let's celebrate their 18th anniversary and Tiffany's birthday. We also hope to see more Girls' Generation interactions soon! Source: Instagram
