Bengaluru entrepreneur says he's often mistaken for a north Indian due to skin colour, Hindi: ‘When I speak in Kannada…'

Hindustan Times5 hours ago

At a time when online debates around Bengaluru's treatment of outsiders continue to surface, a city-based co-founder's personal account has struck a chord with many. Sharing his lived experiences on X (formerly Twitter), Srijan R Shetty opened up about how language plays a crucial role in shaping interpersonal warmth in the city, and how locals respond with unexpected joy when they hear outsiders making an effort to speak Kannada. An X user shared how welcoming Bengaluru is to outsiders if anyone spot them putting efforts learning local language. (Pic for representation generated by AI)

Shetty, who was raised in North India and speaks with a noticeable Hindi accent, said that people often assume he is a North Indian, partly due to his upbringing and skin tone. But the moment he switches to Kannada, particularly with his Mangalorean-style diction, it transforms the interaction completely.
'Every time I speak Kannada with someone new, I see genuine surprise and delight in their eyes,' Shetty wrote. 'Conversations become lively, and they're always curious about how I picked up the language. When I tell them I'm a Mangalorean, they gently point out that my diction is a bit off, but they do so kindly, often chalking it up to regional variations.'
He explained that while there are political undercurrents tied to language and identity, most people in Bengaluru are welcoming. 'Yes, there's a narrative that some locals feel left out of the city's rapid growth,' he acknowledged. 'But I've found that very few will force you to speak Kannada. On the contrary, even small efforts are met with kindness and inclusion.'

Shetty also touched on the linguistic diversity within the state, noting that Kannada itself has many regional variants that can be hard to follow for outsiders — especially in areas influenced by Konkani. Despite these nuances, he said, what matters is the attempt.
'People recognise effort,' he added. 'In my experience, if you try to speak the language, you're often treated like one of their own.'
He ended the post on a light note, saying, 'P.S. In my books, if you've stuck by RCB during their bad seasons, you're Bangalorean enough.'
The post resonated with several users who echoed similar experiences. One user commented, 'Totally relatable. I'm a Tulu-speaking Mangalorean, born in Dubai, lived in the US, and now settled in Bangalore. And yes, I'm a Shetty too.'

Kannappa Twitter reviews: Vishnu Manchu's film has ‘worst VFX since Adipurush' but movie ‘peaks' with Prabhas' entry

Kannappa Twitter reviews: Mukesh Kumar Singh's Vishnu Manchu-starrer Kannappa hit screens on Friday. The devotional film, which boasts a large star cast, including Akshay Kumar, Prabhas, and Mohanlal, received mixed reviews. While people on X (formerly Twitter) seem to have liked the film's second half, the VFX and the first half received criticism. Kannappa Twitter reviews: Mohanlal, Mohan Babu, Prabhas, Vishnu Manchu, Akshay Kumar, Kajal Aggarwal and Sarathkumar star in it. If the reviews on X are anything to go by, Kannappa has a second half that seems to have impressed many. One X user wrote, 'Just watched #Kannappa. My Rating: 3.5/5. For the goosebump BGM in 2nd half – pure magic! #VishnuManchu's performance shines, especially in emotional scenes. #Prabhas & #MohanBabu's powerful presence takes it to another level. Half star for stunning visuals in the climax. 1st half is below average, slow & dull. 2nd half is a Super Blockbuster! Note: Must Watch for the epic 2nd half & performances!' Another person thought Vishnu and Prabhas performed well, 'Manchu vishnu performance good and Mohan Babu garu and mohanlal garu playes decent roles. Prabhas scenes aythe vere. BGM and Devotion.' An X user said in similar vein, 'Prabhas dialogues ki theatre lo whistles vachchayi. Vishnu emotional ga perform chesadu especially 2nd half lo Mythology and visuals solid ga connect ayayi. (People whistled to Prabhas' dialogues. Vishnu portrayed emotions well and especially in the second half, the mythology and visuals are good)' A mixed bag elevated by Prabhas Not everyone, however, was as generous with their reviews because an X user wrote, 'Interval - Avg. Very good subject, Weak writing, Excellent score, peak scenes tests patience, 30 min trim gives a better first artificial setup but overall avg…Lal sir presence.' Another called it a mixed bag which had a few impactful moments but also had its drawbacks, '#KannappaMovie – A mixed bag with some highs and lows. Positives: Songs, Manchu Vishnu's effort, Prabhas' episode, and a few impactful moments. Negatives: Weak cinematography, average editing, artificial CGI, costumes. A decent one-time watch overall. Rating: ⅖.' Another agreed that Prabhas was one of the highlights, 'From prabhas entry to end, movie peaks. But first half really bad. Overall average #kannappa.' VFX comparisons to Adipurush One X user wrote that the VFX in Kannappa was as bad as Prabhas' Adipurush, '#Kannappa - The Worst VFX /CGI since Adipurush in India! Barring #AkshayKumar and #Prabhas there are nothing that is worth watching for and I am surprised that with Good amount of budget, they did this BLUNDER.' Another also called out the VFX and the film overall. 'Horrible sir.. vfx song lo scene lo fight lo asalu emotion undadu.. this is the story of Bhakta Kannappa but Bhakta undadu.. except Prabhas scenes movie motham worst.. asalu page page la dialogues with out emotion enduko artam kadu #Kannappa. (There's no emotion in the VFX or songs or fights. This is the story of Bhakta Kannappa but there's no Bhakt. Except Prabhas' scenes, it's the worst. The dialogues are pages long but you don't get the emotion)' Kannappa also stars Mohan Babu, R Sarathkumar, Arpit Ranka, Brahmanandam, Brahmaji, Siva Balaji, Kaushal Manda, Rahul Madhav, Devaraj, Mukesh Rishi, Raghu Babu, Preity Mukhundhan and Madhoo. It is based on the story of Kannappa, a devotee of Lord Shiva.

Shark Tank trolls Indian CEOs: 'They can't afford a Burj Khalifa flat, so you work 70 hours'

Shark Tank India, the entrepreneurial reality show, has officially opened registrations for its fifth season — but with a surprising twist. Rather than a traditional call to action, the show has released a satirical promotional video that takes a bold jab at toxic work culture and the idolisation of billionaire bosses in corporate India. A satirical video by Shark Tank India trolled toxic hustle culture,(Instagram/ (Also read: Mark Cuban announces departure from Shark Tank after sixteen seasons of mentoring: 'Gonna miss it') Shared on the official Instagram page of Shark Tank India, the 1 minute 40 second-long video opens with a biting remark: 'Many people in India are witness to poverty from their ₹ 150 crore penthouse because these poor CEOs still can't afford a flat in Burj Khalifa.' The video continues in a sarcastic tone, urging viewers to 'work overtime — 70 hours a week for your bosses' and 'continue until you are replaced by AI.' With each line, the creators appear to mock the culture of overwork and blind loyalty to corporations that often comes at the cost of personal growth or entrepreneurial ambition. 'Don't register' — But actually, do The caption accompanying the post reads: 'Stay loyal — keep turning your millionaire bosses into billionaires. Shark Tank India Season 5 registrations are now open but don't register.' The message, layered in irony, eventually drives home a larger point. Towards the end of the video, a voiceover adds: 'Save your billionaire boss, and do not apply for Shark Tank India Season 5. Because here, it's not about your boss's business, it's about building your own.' Watch the clip here: Internet reactions pour in The clip has already crossed 4 million views and triggered a wave of reactionson internet. Many users resonated with the message, while others appreciated the show's clever marketing strategy. One user commented, 'This is the most honest promo I've ever seen from an Indian show.' Another said, 'Finally, someone's saying it. Loyalty doesn't pay the rent.' A viewer sarcastically noted, 'Brb, working 80 hours to afford my boss's next Audi.' Another wrote, 'Bold move. But much needed.' 'This just hit a little too close to home,' a user remarked. 'I feel seen,' another admitted. One more chimed in, 'This alone makes me want to register.'
