Sylvanian Family toymaker drops lawsuit against Irish social media account
The account, called Sylvanian Drama, is run by Thea Von Engelbrechten from Co Kildare and became massively popular during lockdown.
The acccount uses the Sylvanian Families toys to create soap-style storylines, which can often get quite dark and murderous, and has accumulated around 1million followers on Instagram and 2.5million on TikTok. The 'Sylvanian Drama' seems to have come to an end. Pic: Sylvanian Families
As the page's fame rose, it caught the attention of Epoch, aka the company who first launched Sylvanian Families in 1985, who later filed a lawsuit in New York alleging 'copyright infringement' and 'irreparable injury' to the brand's reputation.
Brands such as Marc Jacobs, Sephora, Netflix and Kate Spade, however, were massive fans of the page, collaborating with them on advertising and engaging in sponsorship deals.
One of the page's most popular videos, which has more than 3million views on Instagram alone, sees a character be asked if she wants to 'relapse' tonight, but she explains she is happily married with children now. However, when her husband complains that he doesn't like the dinner she made, she goes off to her drug dealer's house, goes to find her ex, and all hell breaks loose.
The parody account submitted a defence of 'fair use', with Vincent Allen (the managing partner at Carstens, Allen and Gourley law firm) telling RTÉ News: 'She is introducing these characters in a completely different way than Epoch ever dreamed that they will be used and she's creating entertainment.'
'What is she copying? She's just using their toys in a way that they don't like.'
The case was due to go before a judge on August 14, with Epoch dismissing all claims on August 8.
The court documents read that the dismissal was 'without prejudice, with each party to bear its own costs, expenses and attorneys' fees.'
No details of the settlement were released, but it is understood there will be some changes made to the social media accounts.
RTÉ claimed that neither Epoch nor Ms Von Engelberg responded to their request for comment.

New play explores complexities of Irish culture in Harrow
A NEW play which explores the complexities of Irish culture will run at a theatre fringe festival this weekend. Blessed in Harrow will take place within the Boiler House Festival line up at Harrow Arts Centre in North London. The annual event, which was created after Greater London Authority (GLA) funding allowed for the conversion of the Centre's old boiler house into a new creative space, takes place across the month of August. 'We programme innovative and original performances every week from up-and-coming talent from Harrow and beyond,' the organisers explain. Produced by London-based Irish poet and playwright Margaret Rochford, whose roots lie in Co. Kerry, Blessed in Harrow highlights the many nuances of Irish culture through of an extensive group of characters. 'What is it that compels a group of Irish dancers, dreamers, chancers, storytellers, nurses, booksellers, strummers, musicians, plumbers, singers, poets, bellringers, ornithologists, lovers, cosmologists; all to gather in The Boiler House, to rearrange their reasons, to come and count their blessings in Harrow?' the organisers say of the play. 'Join us for an evening exploring Irish culture in Harrow,' they add. This show is part of Harrow Council's Diamond Anniversary Programme. 'We are excited to welcome various themed acts to celebrate Harrow's diverse culture, history and arts landscape for our 2025 edition," a spokesperson for Harrow Arts Centre said. Coronation Street star Beverley Callard, 68, shows off her huge leg tattoo in tiny denim shorts
CORONATION Street legend Beverley Callard flashed her huge leg tattoo as she posed in tiny denim shorts. The Liz McDonald actress, 68, gave a glimpse of the body art stretching across her lower right leg as she stood in her kitchen. 6 Coronation Street actress Bev Callard has given a glimpse of her huge leg tattoo Credit: Instagram 6 The floral inking spanned across her lower leg Credit: Instagram/beverleycallard 6 Bev, 68, chose a design that features magnolia flowers Credit: Instagram Bev was clearly making the most of the hot weather in her thigh-skimming shorts and white top, tying her blonde curls into an up do. The Corrie favourite finished off with a pair of brown strappy sandals. Yet it was her pink, blue and red floral inkings, spanning from her right knee to her ankle, which commanded attention. The ITV soap star's magnolia-themed inkings were her second piece of body art, after previously having comedy and tragedy masks along with a love heart and music score in tribute to Jon McEwan. It also features their wedding anniversary date, 30th October 2010. Meanwhile, Bev's video clip showed the hilarious moment her husband Jon returned home from work. She was standing at her wooden worktop before turning around and exclaiming: "Oh my god!" Dressed in all black and with dirty smears over his face, he said: "I have had a day," before she exclaimed: "I don't believe it." She then said: "Come here Jon, come here. Oh my God. Coronation Street's Beverley Callard looks worlds away from glam Liz McDonald "Just turn to the side," before he showcased more mud on his cheek. Bev continued: "Oh you stink you stink of burned rubber." He replied: "I have cut the bumper or in the boating world, we call it the rubbing streak." To wrap the witty video Bev said: "I love you," to which he said: "Thank you, what's not to love." Coronation Street's 2024 shock exits Corrie has said goodbye to several cast members this year. Let's break down who's left the famous soap: Eliza Woodrow (Savannah Kunyo) has said farewell to Corrie to start a new life in Germany. The youngster moved to live with her dad Dom Everett, who went back on the £10,000 bribe Eliza's grandfather Stu had offered to keep him out of her life. Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) will bow out of the soap this summer when he loses his fight with motor neurone disease (MND) in tragic scenes. After being diagnosed last year, the fan favourite was devastated to learn he only had months left to live. Viewers know he is planning to take his own life to end his suffering. Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) departed the cobbles after being offered the opportunity of a lifetime to study in America. Though she struggled to decide with her stepdad Paul's impending death from MND, she was convinced she had to live her life to the full. Simon Barlow (Alex Bain) has struggled with the sudden departure of his father Peter from the cobbles. The Weatherfield legend left his family and loved ones behind on Boxing Day, 2023, when his wife Carla Connor encouraged him to travel around the world with a friend. Simon's been on a downward spiral ever since and his exit could end in tragedy. Alya Nazir is set to leave the cobbles as actress Sair Khan prepares to go on maternity leave ahead of the birth of her first child. It looks likely she'll be heading to Dublin after securing a lucrative new job, leaving her colleague and fling Adam Barlow behind. Show stalwart Sue Cleaver, who plays Eileen Grimshaw, is taking a break to star in the Sister Act The Musical UK tour. She will be back filming in May once her dates on the tour come to an end. Her character left the Street after her son Jason broke his back after falling off a moped in Asia. In her caption, she then put: "POV: Your husband 'works on the boat' and comes home looking like this." One fan was quick to post a host of laughing Emoji icons as another put: "Hilarious." Giving a light-hearted insight into her life, Bev previously shared a cheeky snap showing her naked in bed with her husband. OFF SCREEN Back in 2021, Bev - who quit the ITV soap in 2019 - looked worlds away from her glam soap character as she helped to renovate the pair's boat. Bev swapped her character's daring leopard-print wardrobe and heels for a hoodie and a make-up free complexion as she proudly showed off her purchase. She pulled her hair back into a ponytail and wore paint-stained trainers as she got stuck into her latest project. At the time, the boat was moored on the picturesque Norfolk Broads. Bev wrote in her lengthy caption: "So here we are… so much has been done since we've last updated you! We've been busy! "Especially.. but now I can start helping! We thought we'd bring you along to mark out where everything is going to be.. swipe across to see more! "It's all coming together now and we're so excited!" Amid the renovation and move to Norfolk, it was revealed she's got a new side hustle teaching fitness. The actress does the new gig for free, and instead just asks local women donate £5 a session to charity. Beverley is well known for being a fitness fanatic and previously released workout videos and even taught classes at the height of her fame. 6 She filmed a witty clip with her husband Jon Credit: Instagram/beverleycallard 6 Bev is best known for playing Corrie's Liz McDonald Credit: ITV

Inside Roy Keane's family life as football great to become grandad again
Roy Keane is set to become a grandad for the fourth time after his daughter Leah announced she is pregnant with her first child. Leah, who is engaged to England and Southampton footballer Taylor Harwood-Bellis, revealed the happy news on her Instagram page on Wednesday. She shared a video compilation, with the caption reading: "Half of me, half of you." It included a number of clips including one showing Leah telling her fiancé that she was pregnant, along with her trip to her first scan. The news comes just days after Manchester United legend Keane gave a glimpse into his family life as he shared a number of images with his grandchildren on Instagram. The former Republic of Ireland star turned 54 last Saturday and sharing the photos online, wrote: Happy Birthday to me. All the gifts I need." Keane has used his Instagram account to show his softer side over the past few years. Here's what we know about his private life: Happy marriage to 'brilliant' wife Roy Keane with his wife Theresa (Image: Getty Images) Keane initially encountered his future spouse Theresa Doyle at a nightclub in 1992, whilst he was still playing for Nottingham Forest. Although Keane was immediately smitten, it became apparent that Doyle wasn't swayed by his celebrity footballer status. He previously revealed to the Mirror: "I spotted a beautiful girl in a club in town. Her name was Theresa Doyle but she blanked me. She was in a steady relationship and didn't seem at all impressed by Roy Keane, the great footballer. In fact, I think my reputation was as a downer for all kinds of reasons. From time to time we ran into each other around Nottingham. I knew some of her friends, who told me Theresa was a dentist's assistant. Eventually, after her relationship broke up, she relented and we went out together. I was in love." Nevertheless, their inaugural date was hardly the stuff of romantic dreams and they wound up having a minor quarrel about where they should go. During an appearance on The Tommy Tiernan Show on RTE, Keane had viewers in stitches after confessing things went "very badly", culminating with Theresa slamming a car door. To the delight of the studio audience, Keane recalled: "We met, I picked her up, and I'd met her [before] when I had a few drinks so the chat was slightly different. We went for a spin and I said, 'Do you fancy going to the pictures?' Because at least at the pictures you can just watch the movie, you don't have to chat too much. And she said, 'No, I went last night with my friends'. So I said, 'Do you want to go for a drink?' She said, 'No'. "I literally drove back to the car, this is all within 10 or 15 minutes. She said, 'What are you doing?' I said, 'Well, you don't want to go for a drink, you don't want to go to the pictures, what else can we do?' She got out [of the car] and I said, 'Might see you next week' and she said 'I don't think so' and slammed the door. That was my first date." Fortunately, that disastrous first encounter wasn't the final chapter for Keane and Nottingham-born Theresa. The pair exchanged vows in 1997 during an intimate ceremony at the Church of Our Lady Crowned in Keane's native Mayfield, Cork, and have remained devoted to one another ever since. Speaking candidly about their marriage in a Sunday Times interview during the early 2000s, Keane described her as his "rock". He said: "I don't really mention her in public, but in fairness to her, she has been a rock in my life. Just brilliant. She reads me better than I read myself. I wouldn't say Theresa likes every part of the package. She knows I haven't got a halo over my head. Actually, that's what she likes about me. She also knows I am not the nastiest person in the world." Devoted father-of-five Roy Keane and his daughter Caragh. (Image: The Overlap / Stick to football / YouTube) Keane and Theresa are parents to five children called Shannon, Caragh, Aidan, Leah and Alanna. The renowned ex-footballer frequently brought them onto the pitch during his Premier League days. In his memoir, Keane confessed that he "longed to go home to Theresa and the kids" following the 1999 Champions League triumph, instead of partying with his teammates. He penned: "My plan when I first stopped was, we're going to go on some family trips, we're going to be like the Waltons. We're all going to spend time together, go walk in the park, and after a month or two they didn't have the same plan as me so I think they were kind of missing me going to work. I got offered the job at Sunderland and I was away on a family holiday and my family were looking at me... Not saying it directly but going we kind of enjoy your company but not too much of it so when the job came back up they were saying you should go for it." Keane previously delighted by posting a photograph on Instagram featuring his charming mini-me grandson. In the snap, uploaded during Keane's debut week on Instagram back in 2021, both Keane and his then-infant grandson displayed remarkably similar stern expressions, accompanied by the amusing caption, "just like his grandad, always smiling." In a separate post offering insight into Keane's role as a doting grandfather, the pundit revealed details about a cinema outing to watch Sing 2. He quipped: "After arguing with him about whether to watch Scream or Sing 2. I finally won. Sing 2 was brilliant." Keane did remove his Instagram presence, much to supporters' dismay, though he has subsequently reopened his profile. Clarifying his choice during a Newstalk's Off The Ball appearance, Keane explained: "I'm sure people will get over it and survive! I've said it before, I done it for a bit of fun. With Covid, my youngest daughter was insistent I did it for a bit of fun. But it's moved on now, a bit of closure on it." Other interests During a chat with a former colleague on The Overlap, Keane was questioned about his non-footballing interests. He responded: "Family, dogs - that's it." He added: "When you say passion, I love watching other sports. I've been to the last couple of Super Bowls. I wouldn't go out on a Saturday night but I'd go into maybe Altrincham at 6 o'clock for tea, just for a bit of privacy." The sports star invested in a flat in Dublin's priciest apartment complex in recent years, with 215 properties ranging from €825,000 to a staggering €6.5 million. He also has a sprawling residence in Cheshire, where he settled during his time playing for Manchester United. In 2010, he listed his Hale home for sale at £9.5million and is now thought to reside in a 9,500 sq ft mansion in Hale, frequently posting photos of his swimming pool and impressive gardens. Keane seems to have a fondness for gardening, as evidenced by a photo on his now-deleted Instagram account showing the sports icon tending to plants in his expansive garden.
