Swadeshi Jagran Manch launches campaign to boycott foreign goods, boost self-reliance

NEW DELHI: Amid escalating developments stemming from US-imposed tariffs on India, the RSS-affiliated Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) has launched a nationwide campaign urging citizens to boycott foreign products and embrace indigenous (Swadeshi) goods. The campaign gained momentum on Sunday with a symbolic demonstration held under the 'Swadeshi, Suraksha and Swavlamban' campaign in Connaught Place and its surrounding areas. Its aim is to inspire a mass movement advocating the use of domestically produced goods. Dr Ashwani Mahajan, National Co-convener of the Swadeshi Jagran Manch, in a statement welcoming Prime Minister Narendra Modi's emphasis on Swadeshi products, said that the organisation firmly believes that the nation's prosperity lies in self-reliance and the use of indigenous products. "In the current circumstances of global uncertainties, where global value chains, payment systems and global currencies are all being weaponised, the USA and other countries are becoming more and more protectionist and blocking global exports using tariff walls and unjust non-tariff barriers, goods are being dumped based on excess capacities by some countries, especially China, and conspiracy to eliminate our manufacturing, Swadeshi can be an important means of protecting our national interests," the RSS-affiliated SJM stated. With the launch of the 'Swadeshi Suraksha evam Swavalamban Abhiyaan' on 12 June 2025, in collaboration with a wide network of traders, industry associations and social organisations, the Swadeshi movement has received renewed impetus. The objective is to raise awareness throughout the country to support the vision of making India great again — what the Prime Minister refers to as 'MIGA'.

Railway budget for Karnataka jumped nearly ninefold under Modi: Ashwini Vaishnaw

Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday highlighted a sharp rise in budgetary allocation for Karnataka's railway projects since 2014, crediting Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the change. Addressing a gathering after Mr. Modi inaugurated the Yellow Line of Namma Metro here on Sunday, Mr. Vaishnaw said that Karnataka had been receiving only about ₹835 crore annually for railway works prior to 2014. 'Under Mr. Modi's leadership, this allocation has surged to ₹7,500 crore. At present, projects worth ₹54,000 crore are under way across the State,' he said. He added that 61 railway stations in the State are being modernised under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, aimed at upgrading passenger amenities and infrastructure. Devanahalli emerges as iPhone hub Shifting focus to the electronics sector, Mr. Vaishnaw, who is also the Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Electronics & Information Technology, said that India's electronics manufacturing output had expanded sixfold to ₹12 lakh crore during this period, while exports had risen eightfold to over ₹3 lakh crore. 'A decade ago, the idea of India exporting electronics seemed far-fetched. Today, the country stands as the world's second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, with Bengaluru's Devanahalli emerging as a significant hub for iPhone production,' he said. According to the Minister, the Prime Minister's push towards 'Viksit Bharat 2047' has yielded nationwide benefits, including Karnataka. Bengaluru leads in AI Highlighting initiatives to make advanced technology accessible, especially artificial intelligence (AI), Mr. Vaishnaw said the India AI Mission provides 34,000 GPUs as a shared computing resource for innovators across the country. 'Bengaluru is one of the biggest users of this facility. The cost is less than one US dollar an hour, making it the world's most affordable common compute resource,' he said. He also pointed out to the efforts of Bengaluru-based startup Sarvam, which is developing an indigenous Large Language Model trained on extensive datasets in multiple Indian languages. This AI system, he said, is being designed to be free from biases and to reflect India's linguistic diversity.

Govt, ruling party in S. Korea agree to deliberate on controversial capital gains tax

The government and the ruling Democratic Party (DP) agreed on Sunday to deliberate on the Lee Jae Myung administration's recent proposal to broaden the definition of large shareholders to increase capital gains tax revenues. The two sides held a high-level meeting presided over by Prime Minister Kim Min-seok at his official residence and discussed the controversial proposal to lower the threshold for being classified as a large shareholder from 5 billion won (US$3.59 million) to 1 billion won, DP senior spokesperson Rep. Park Soo-hyun said at a press briefing, reports Yonhap news agency. If finalised, the measure would be a reversal of the previous administration's decision to raise the threshold from 1 billion won to 5 billion won in order to ease capital gains tax obligations. "The party and the government consulted and coordinated closely and decided to deliberate on the issue while watching future developments," Park said, adding the party's policy committee conveyed its opinion on the proposal to the government. The two sides also discussed follow-up measures to South Korea and the United States' recent trade deal, agreeing to provide support to industries and businesses likely to be hit hardest by the new U.S. tariffs, according to Park. He said the party requested the government thoroughly pursue ways for South Korean businesses to enter the U.S. market while conducting negotiations with Washington on when to lower auto tariffs. In addition, the party asked that the government prepare meticulously for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit to be held in the southeastern city of Gyeongju in October. Meanwhile, South Korean stocks tumbled at the steepest pace in nearly four months earlier this month as investor sentiment was dragged down by the government's tax revision proposal to raise taxes on corporations and stock investors. The local currency lost sharply against the U.S. dollar to top the 1,400-won line for the first time since May.
