Roganic Hong Kong – in a new location, with a new menu – has achieved something magical.

It has created a warm and woody, cocoon-like space where diners feel connected with nature despite being in the heart of the city's bustling Causeway Bay shopping district.
The timber used on the walls is reclaimed, and the chunky tables and curved structures around the dining room are made of wood salvaged from trees knocked over by typhoons or that have fallen because of old age.
Weaving upcycled material into the design makes sense considering the strong sustainability vision of Simon Rogan, the British chef who opened Roganic in Sino Plaza, just a few blocks from its new home in Lee Garden One, in 2019.

A branch of its London namesake, Roganic quickly positioned itself as a culinary hotspot, winning fans and accolades including a
Michelin star in 2020 and Hong Kong's first
Michelin green star the following year.

Now Rogan, a pioneer of Britain's farm-to-fork movement, is hoping to impress again with a menu that remains rooted in zero-waste principles despite being completely different from the menu at the former location.

A first meeting, held in mid-May in Geneva, brought a pause to the US-China trade dispute. But Trump then accused Beijing of not respecting the terms of the de-escalation agreement. On Thursday the Republican president finally discussed the issues with Xi for the first time since the trade tensions soared, assuring that the conversation had been positive. Xi for his part told Trump the two should 'correct the course' of bilateral relations, according to remarks quoted by official Chinese media.

Photo: AFP The Tokyo High Court on Friday overturned a US$92 billion damages order against four ex-bosses of the operator of the devastated Fukushima nuclear plant, Japanese media reported. The former executives had in 2022 been ordered to pay the sum, or 13.3 trillion yen, in a suit brought by shareholders over the nuclear disaster triggered by a massive tsunami in 2011 following an earthquake. Shareholders had argued the catastrophe could have been prevented if Tokyo Electric Power Company (Tepco) bosses had listened to research and implemented preventative measures like placing an emergency power source on higher ground. But the defendants countered that the risks were unpredictable, and the studies cited were not credible. The 13.3 trillion yen damages award was believed to be the largest amount ever ordered in a civil suit in Japan. It was meant to cover Tepco's costs for dismantling reactors, compensating affected residents and cleaning up contamination. In 2015, British oil giant BP was ordered to pay US$20.8 billion for the Gulf of Mexico oil spill in what was described at the time as the highest fine ever imposed on a company in US history. Jiji Press reported on Friday that the High Court had denied the tsunami was a predictable event. Footage broadcast on Japanese networks showed the plaintiffs holding a banner calling for an even higher damages order of 22 trillion yen. "Take responsibility for the Fukushima nuclear accident!" their banner said. Three of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant's six reactors were operating when a massive undersea quake triggered a massive tsunami on March 11, 2011. They went into meltdown after their cooling systems failed when waves flooded backup generators, leading to the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. Overall the tsunami along Japan's northeast coast left around 18,500 people dead or missing. In March, Japan's top court said it had finalised the acquittal of two former Tepco executives charged with professional negligence over the Fukushima meltdown. The decision concluded the only criminal trial to arise from the plant's 2011 accident. (AFP)

HK gov't to introduce proposal to boost rights of delivery couriers this year, labour minister says
The Hong Kong government will introduce a proposal this year to enhance the rights and benefits of digital platform workers, labour and welfare chief Chris Sun has said, following recent strikes by delivery workers. The government 'will introduce a proposal for further enhancing the rights and benefits of platform workers within this year, and will consider reinforcing the protection for platform workers through legislative means,' Sun told the Legislative Council (LegCo) on Wednesday. He also said the government had established a liaison group consisting of representatives from the government, platform companies, and labour organisations 'to explore suitable proposals.' Sun's remarks were in response to pro-establishment lawmaker Kingsley Wong's question about whether the government would introduce a legislative proposal to protect the labour rights of delivery couriers, as promised last year. The government said in November that it would propose ways to enhance the protection of platform workers, which 'may include proposals that can only be implemented by legislation.' Sun said on Wednesday that the government's proposal would be based on the results of surveys and consultations conducted by the Labour Department last year, including the Thematic Household Survey, an opinion survey of platform workers, and focus groups on their working conditions. He also told LegCo that the survey results showed that 'platform workers were most concerned about work injury compensation.' Delivery workers do not enjoy the same labour protections as full-time employees, as Hong Kong law stipulates that delivery workers are considered self-employed contractors. If a worker has an accident while delivering food, they can only claim accident insurance provided by the delivery platform – if any. They are not entitled to workers' compensation under the Employees' Compensation Ordinance. However, the government is unlikely to drastically change the status of delivery workers, the labour minister told lawmakers at Wednesday's meeting. 'I think it's not suitable to give a blanket definition for platform workers as full-time employees,' Sun said, adding that a delivery courier's status as a full-time employee or self-employed contractor would depend on their working conditions. Keeta workers' strikes Since late April, couriers working for Keeta have been staging a series of protests across Hong Kong demanding better treatment from the delivery platform. On May 22, around 270 Keeta riders went on strike in Central, Hung Hom, and To Kwa Wan to protest what they called an 'unfair' system that is slashing their earnings. Owned by Chinese tech giant Meituan, Keeta launched in Hong Kong in May 2023 and has grown steadily in market share. It is one of two delivery apps in the city, after British company Deliveroo exited Hong Kong in early April.
