'Narendra Modi not a big problem... Met him 2-3 times': Rahul Gandhi
Addressing Congress's Bhagidari Nyay Sammelan in New Delhi, the leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha asked the audience if they could name the biggest problem in politics.
"You know what is the biggest problem in politics. No, Narendra Modi is not a big problem,' Gandhi said, responding to a voice in the crowd.
Rahul Gandhi then went on to say that he has met PM Narendra Modi two or three times and doesn't think he is the biggest problem in politics. According to the Rae Bareli MP, the Prime Minister is 'all show, no substance'.
"I am telling you, you have given him too much importance; he is not a problem. Earlier, I had not met him, but now I have met him 2-3 times. Now I understand there is nothing - he is all show, no substance. You have not met him, I have," he added
Rahul Gandhi accepts 'mistake'
Rahul Gandhi reflected on his 'mistakes' and said that he did not do enough to protect the interests of people from the Other Backwards Castes (OBC) category.
'I have been in politics since 2004, it has been 21 years...When I look back, I can see that I made a mistake. I didn't protect the OBCs like I should have,' he said.
He added that there's a reason behind his oversight, which is that he did not understand their (OBC) issues in depth at the time. He added that had he known their history and issues, he would have conducted a caste census back then.

Rahul Gandhi said that this was his mistake and not his party's and that he is going to rectify it.
'It was because I could not understand your issues in depth at that time...My regret is that if I had known about your (OBC) history, about your issues, even a little more, I would have conducted a Caste Census right at that time. It is a mistake I made. It is not the Congress party's mistake; it is my mistake. I am going to rectify that mistake,' he said while addressing the gathering.

Rahul Gandhi added, 'We will conduct a caste census, X-ray of population in all Congress-ruled states.'

This visit comes at a time when the political scene in the State is hotting up and a nine-day Monsoon Session of the State legislature is set to commence from Monday. Mr. Modi's visit is expected to further add to the political heat. Meanwhile, both the Congress and BJP have been trying to take credit over Namma Metro in the city.

SEP Commission opposes foreign universities setting up campuses in Karnataka
State Education Policy (SEP) Commission chairman Sukhadeo Thorat told The Hindu that the commission in its report submitted to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday, had opposed allowing foreign universities directly setting up their campuses in Karnataka. 'We are not in favour of foreign universities opening their campuses in Karnataka. It will not be accessible for the poor and it is very expensive. Therefore, we have favoured institutional collaboration with foreign universities for awarding degrees,' Prof. Thorat said. The University of Liverpool, United Kingdom, is expected to open its campus in Bengaluru in September 2026. Minister for Large and Medium Industries M.B. Patil earlier this year said that University of East London, York University, and University of Wolverhampton have expressed keen interest in Karnataka's KWIN City initiative. Several other foreign universities from Australia, United States of America, and Italy are also said to be keen to establish their campuses in Karnataka. Instead, the SEP Commission has recommended accessible online education for all students, increasing the job oriented course in all streams of education, and introducing new courses on emerging technologies like quantum computing, Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, nano science in technical education. Low GER in Karnataka Prof. Thorat expressed concern over low gross enrollment ratio (GER) for higher education. 'GER in Karnataka for higher education is about 30% to 35%, ranking ninth among States in GER, while it ranks second in per capita income. So we need to look at other reasons for low GER,' he said. 'Regional disparity is one among the major reasons for this lower GER. Kalyana Karnataka has a GER in the range of 20-25%, while GER in coastal and inland Karnataka is around 37%. There are seven or eight districts with GER less than 20%. We have suggested measures to improve GER in Kalyana Karnataka,' Prof. Thorat said. The commission has found low GER in disadvantaged communities. 'Poor coverage of post-matric scholarship, financial assistance is one of the reasons for low GER in these communities. In the case of SCs and STs, the income limit is very low compared to others. Even with ₹2.5 lakh of annual income, so many students are deprived of scholarships. Meanwhile, income limit for Economically Weaker Section (EWS) students is pegged at ₹8 lakh and for OBCs at ₹6 lakh per annum. Therefore, we have suggested income limit exemption up to ₹10 lakh for SC and ST students,' he said. Prof. Thorat further said that they have recommended that the government should provide free education for rural girls, along with other financial incentives to reduce their domestic work, not to go for early marriages etc. 'We have also recommended some incentives to married women as well,' he said. The SEP Commission has also recommended setting up of a Finance Corporation, under the PPP mode which will give education loans. According to the SEP report, higher educational institutions in Karnataka are not performing well. 'In the national ranking list of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Karnataka's universities and colleges are not doing well. There are very few government colleges that have a NAAC rank. Lack of permanent faculties, low quality of teaching and lack of infrastructure are major reasons for this poor performance. There are about 20,000 teaching posts vacant at government higher educational institutions. Therefore, we have recommended that these posts should be filled within the next five years. In future, there should be no guest faculties in higher educational institutions,' he said.

Trump to lay out his plan for reducing crime in Washington
President Donald Trump said he will lay out his administration's plan to reduce crime in the nation's capital, even as violent incidents in the District of Columbia are at a 30-year low. Trump said in a social media post that he will have a news conference on Monday that 'will, essentially, stop violent crime in Washington, DC.' Trump on Thursday directed an increased presence of federal law enforcement around Washington, DC, a day after threatening the federal government could seize control of it. That move came a day after a former member of his so-called Department of Government Efficiency was injured during an attempted carjacking in DC. The city, which has voted overwhelmingly for Democrats for decades, has also been seeking to end all federal control of the city, a movement known as 'home rule.' Violence has been dropping in the District for two years, according to local police data. As of Jan. 3, violent crime in DC in 2024 was at a 30-year low, according to the US Justice Department. Trump's powers to 'take over' the capital city are limited. Partial home rule was established by Congress in 1973, which allows residents to elect their own mayor, who appoints the police chief. Residents also elect a District council that can pass local laws. But those laws can be overturned by Congress, which approves the city's budget. Trump can't override the home rule law without Congress, but he can assign federal agents to conduct law enforcement operations inside the city and has done so before, acting independently of the Metropolitan Police Department. He has also said that he is considering deploying the National Guard in the city. The president has often, without evidence, cast cities around the country as crime-ridden, and has increased those complaints about DC since the former staffer was attacked. Trump said on his Truth Social platform earlier this week that he wants to 'federalize' the city if local officials don't do more to address crime. Trump has issued executive orders this year that created a panel to coordinate efforts to improve safety and address graffiti and vandalism in the city, along with one that ordered a crackdown on homeless encampments on federal lands.
