After Mandating ABS, Govt Considering Hands-Off Detection In Bikes
Centre to enforce stricter safety norms for two-wheelers, requiring overspeed warnings and hands-off handlebar detection to reduce reckless riding and improve road safety.
Despite the severe risks involved, some individuals continue to engage in reckless driving, overspeeding, and hands-off riding to create social media reels. This behaviour not only endangers their own lives but also the lives of other road users. In a significant step toward enhancing road safety, the Centre is preparing to tighten safety norms for two-wheelers.
After mandating anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and certified helmets, the government is now considering a new set of regulations aimed directly at reckless behaviour such as overspeeding and hands-off riding.
According to a LiveMint report, the government plans to make overspeed warning systems and hands-off handlebar detection features mandatory in all new motorcycles. These safety systems will monitor rider behaviour and issue visual and audible alerts when speed limits are exceeded or when the rider removes their hands from the handlebars.
The proposed changes are currently under consultation but reflect a strong intent to tackle the staggering number of road accidents involving two-wheelers. Data shows that nearly 44 per cent of all road fatalities in India involve two-wheeler riders, with overspeeding and loss of control among the leading causes.
These features are not just about compliance but about changing the riding culture, as riders not only endanger their lives but also put others at risk through reckless riding.
The system, inspired by car safety mechanisms like seatbelt reminders, will use electronic sensors to detect unsafe riding behaviour. Once operational, it will help enforce safer practices without relying solely on manual policing.
This initiative is part of a broader two-wheeler safety effort, set to take effect from January 2026. All new two-wheelers will be required to come equipped with ABS, a braking technology already mandated for motorcycles above 125cc. The rule will now apply across the board to ensure better stability and reduced stopping distance during sudden braking.
Additionally, the government has already mandated the inclusion of two BIS-certified helmets with every new two-wheeler sale to tackle the high incidence of head injuries. For electric two-wheelers, which are virtually silent, new regulations will require built-in sound-generating systems to alert pedestrians and nearby vehicles, enhancing safety for both riders and others on the road.
These upcoming safety norms highlight the government's commitment to reducing road fatalities and ensuring a safer riding experience in a country where two-wheelers dominate daily commuting.

2025 F1 Championship Battle A Two-Horse Race Between McLaren Duo, Admits Oscar Piastri
Last Updated: Oscar Piastri leads the F1 championship, with McLaren dominating the season. Piastri and Norris are the main contenders, while Max Verstappen trails by 81 points in third place. Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri acknowledged on Thursday that the title battle has effectively become an all-McLaren affair between himself and teammate Lando Norris. The Australian leads Norris by 16 points heading into this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, the final race before the mid-season break in August. Meanwhile, defending world champion Max Verstappen—a four-time title winner with Red Bull—is a distant 81 points adrift in third, a gap that is increasingly viewed as unbridgeable given McLaren's current form. 'I Suppose So": Piastri Concedes It's a Two-Horse Race When asked by reporters in Budapest whether the championship was now a two-way contest between himself and Norris, Piastri replied, 'I suppose so." While both drivers and McLaren team officials had previously resisted making any bold declarations about the title picture, the evidence is now difficult to ignore. 'Every weekend now—or at least the last few weekends—it's been Lando and I," said Piastri. 'I expect our competition to still be strong and put up a good fight, especially at certain tracks through the rest of the year." Despite the growing gap, Piastri warned against ruling out other challengers just yet: 'Whether that comes from Max, or Ferrari, or Mercedes, or someone else, we never really know. I'm not too concerned about that. I'm just trying to win each race and extend the lead." McLaren Dominating the Field McLaren's dominance in the 2024 season has been staggering. The team has already secured six one-two finishes in 13 races, with Piastri claiming six victories and Norris four. Verstappen, in contrast, has won only twice this season. McLaren lead the Constructors' Championship with 516 points, holding a commanding 268-point advantage over second-placed Ferrari. The Hungaroring is expected to further play to McLaren's strengths. 'Hungary has been historically a good track for us as a team—certainly the two years I've been with them," said Piastri. 'I expect us to be strong again this weekend." The 23-year-old Australian claimed his maiden Formula One victory at the circuit last year, while Norris started from pole. view comments First Published: July 31, 2025, 23:31 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. F1 champion Max Verstappen says hes staying with Red Bull team for 2026
Budapest, Jul 31 (AP) Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen says he is staying with the Red Bull team for next year, ending months of speculation over his future. 'For me, it's always been quite clear, and also for next year," the four-time champion said Thursday ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. 'I'm discussing with the team already the plans — the things that we want to change for next year, so that means that I'm also staying with the team for next year." Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull through 2028. At recent races he had deflected direct questions about whether he'd stay with the team next year, and there had been indications that a performance-related clause could allow him to exit the contract earlier. The exact details of any clause are not public. view comments First Published: July 31, 2025, 21:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
