2025 F1 Championship Battle A Two-Horse Race Between McLaren Duo, Admits Oscar Piastri
Oscar Piastri leads the F1 championship, with McLaren dominating the season. Piastri and Norris are the main contenders, while Max Verstappen trails by 81 points in third place.
Formula One championship leader Oscar Piastri acknowledged on Thursday that the title battle has effectively become an all-McLaren affair between himself and teammate Lando Norris.
The Australian leads Norris by 16 points heading into this weekend's Hungarian Grand Prix, the final race before the mid-season break in August.
Meanwhile, defending world champion Max Verstappen—a four-time title winner with Red Bull—is a distant 81 points adrift in third, a gap that is increasingly viewed as unbridgeable given McLaren's current form.
'I Suppose So": Piastri Concedes It's a Two-Horse Race
When asked by reporters in Budapest whether the championship was now a two-way contest between himself and Norris, Piastri replied, 'I suppose so."
While both drivers and McLaren team officials had previously resisted making any bold declarations about the title picture, the evidence is now difficult to ignore.
'Every weekend now—or at least the last few weekends—it's been Lando and I," said Piastri. 'I expect our competition to still be strong and put up a good fight, especially at certain tracks through the rest of the year."
Despite the growing gap, Piastri warned against ruling out other challengers just yet: 'Whether that comes from Max, or Ferrari, or Mercedes, or someone else, we never really know. I'm not too concerned about that. I'm just trying to win each race and extend the lead."
McLaren Dominating the Field
McLaren's dominance in the 2024 season has been staggering. The team has already secured six one-two finishes in 13 races, with Piastri claiming six victories and Norris four. Verstappen, in contrast, has won only twice this season.
McLaren lead the Constructors' Championship with 516 points, holding a commanding 268-point advantage over second-placed Ferrari.
The Hungaroring is expected to further play to McLaren's strengths. 'Hungary has been historically a good track for us as a team—certainly the two years I've been with them," said Piastri. 'I expect us to be strong again this weekend."
The 23-year-old Australian claimed his maiden Formula One victory at the circuit last year, while Norris started from pole.

Canadian Open: Home Hope Victoria Mboko, Naomi Osaka Set Up Championship Clash
Last Updated: Osaka posted a 6-2, 7-6 (9/7) victory over Denmark's Clara Tauson, while Canadian teenage sensation Mboko battled past Elena Rybakina in a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) come-from-behind win. Naomi Osaka will take on home hope Victoria Mboko in the final of the WTA Canadian Open in Montreal after the two players secured their berth in the championship clash of the event. Osaka posted a 6-2, 7-6 (9/7) victory over Denmark's Clara Tauson, while Canadian teenage sensation Mboko battled past Elena Rybakina in a 1-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7/4) come-from-behind win. The 18-year-old wild card thrived on the crowd's energy, attributing her perseverance to ecstatic supporters after a fall left her with a sore right wrist in the third set of her first tour-level semi-final. Mboko, who defeated top-seeded French Open champion Coco Gauff in the fourth round, didn't let it hinder her. After losing an early break in the third set, she refused to back down, relying on her forehand and saving a match point as she broke Rybakina in the 10th game to level the set. A couple of untimely double faults allowed ninth-seeded Rybakina to break back for a 6-5 lead, but the ninth seed from Kazakhstan was broken at love in the next game, setting the stage for tiebreaker drama. 'After I had that fall, I wasn't in the greatest spirits, but I'm happy that I kept my composure and was patient at the right moments," said Mboko, who won the last three points of a decider she described as 'stressful". 'Anything can happen," an exhausted Mboko beamed as the crowd's cheers rained down on her. 'Unfortunately, I fell, but I had everyone supporting me and pushing me." Mboko started the season ranked outside the top 300 but had worked her way up to 85th by competing in lower-level tournaments. She is assured of breaking into the top 40 regardless of the result against Osaka, a former world number one who has struggled to find consistency since returning from maternity leave in 2024. Osaka looked re-energised this week after a coaching shakeup and breezed through the first set against Tauson. However, Tauson twice regained a break in the second set, pushing it to a tiebreaker where she had chances to level the match after taking a 6-4 lead. Unable to convert her set points, the Dane saved one match point to make it 7-7, but Osaka won the next two to seal the victory and reach her first final in a WTA 1000 level event since Miami in 2022. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. He Argued With Kohli On Debut And Left Bumrah Fuming, Now This Australian Has Been Picked For Maiden India Tour
Last Updated: 19-year-old Australia opener Sam Konstas will be representing Australia A on their red-ball tour of India next month. Cricket Australia have sent struggling Sam Konstas to India for Australia A's red-ball tour of the country next month. Konstas first came into the limelight following a half-century on debut while facing the likes of Jasprit Bumrah during the last Border-Gavaskar Trophy in December. He further hit the headlines thanks to his heated altercation with Virat Kohli and later Bumrah. However, following the BGT, Konstas has been struggling to get going in Test cricket. Australia chief selector George Bailey feels that the experience of playing in India will be invaluable for the teenages. The 19-year-old, who had a tough time during Australia's recent senior tour of the West Indies, is the only current Test player chosen for two four-day matches in Lucknow. Test-capped players Cooper Connolly, Todd Murphy, and Nathan McSweeney were also included in the 14-man squad. A separate Australia A squad was announced for three one-day matches. 'The subcontinent presents many unique challenges and offers the chance to utilise different skills with both bat and ball," said Bailey. Konstas made headlines during the Melbourne Boxing Day Test last year when he faced Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, scoring a fiery debut 60 with a series of unorthodox shots. He lasted for one more Test before being dropped, only to regain his place for the West Indies Test series in June-July. However, he struggled to score more than 25 in six innings, making his hold on the position increasingly uncertain ahead of Australia's home Ashes series against England this year. Jasprit Bumrah Rated 6/10 For England Tour: 'He Did Not Live Up To Expectation'
Last Updated: Jasprit Bumrah finished England tour as India's second-highest wicket-taker despite playing two Tests less. Did world's top-ranked Test bowler not meet expectations during the recent India-England Test series? Irfan Pathan thinks so. Jasprit Bumrah, the world's no.1 Test bowler, played in three of the five-match series as part of his workload management. He finished with 14 wickets and was the tour's fourth highest wicket-taker despite playing two matches less. Pretty impressive. However, it's another fact that India lost two of the contests that Bumrah was part of and drew another. While it may have been just a coincidence but for Pathan, a senior bowler carries responsibility of winning matches for his team something which Bumrah failed to do in England. The former India allrounder rated Bumrah 6 out of 10 for his contribution. 'Bumrah will get six out of ten. Why? The reason is that when you are a senior player, there is a lot of responsibility on you to win matches. He played in three Tests, and India did not win any of them," Pathan said on his YouTube channel. 'Let us go back to the first Test. He took five wickets in the first innings but did not get a single wicket in the second innings (while defending 371 runs). At that crucial time, when your main match-winner is expected to step up and win the game, it is up to him to find a way, whether it is over the wicket, around the wicket, yorkers, slower balls, or bouncers, to create pressure. In the Leeds Test, we did not see that pressure being built. England ended up scoring heavily, and Bumrah did not take a single wicket, which was a bit surprising. And this did not happen just once," he added. Pathan then noted that there were moments when the team needed another over from Bumrah in a spell but claims the 31-year-old 'held back a little." 'There were moments, like when a sixth over was needed. I spoke about this during commentary as well. Joe Root had been dismissed by him 11 times, and in that Lord's Test, Bumrah bowled five overs. Just one more over, the sixth, could have pushed harder. I felt he held back a little there. There was also some pick-and-choose, which I have always been against, and that was visible too," he said. Pathan though admitted Bumrah performed and got two five-wicket hauls too but didn't live up to the expectations. 'To be fair, whenever he played, he did perform. He took a five-wicket haul and got his name on the Lord's honours board. But when you are the number one bowler, there is an expectation of number one-level performance, and I felt he did not quite live up to that," Pathan concluded. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
