
Kia Carens Clavis EV to launch in India tomorrow, set to be first 7-seater electric MPV in segment
The Carens Clavis EV is positioned to cater to urban families looking for a practical electric mobility option that does not compromise on space or convenience. The model borrows its silhouette from the ICE-powered Carens, but includes distinct visual changes to set it apart.
Externally, the Clavis EV is expected to retain the MPV-friendly proportions of its petrol and diesel counterparts. However, Kia could introduce electric-specific styling updates, including a closed-off front grille that doubles as the charging port, redesigned bumpers, and new aerodynamic alloy wheels aimed at enhancing efficiency. The rear is likely to carry forward the connected LED light bar seen on the standard model.
The interior will largely resemble the ICE version, albeit with an EV-specific digital interface. Expect dual 12.3-inch screens for infotainment and instrumentation, a new two-spoke steering wheel, and a revised lower centre console offering additional storage. A dual-tone black-and-white interior theme is also anticipated.
Convenience features expected include a powered and ventilated driver's seat, dual-zone automatic climate control with rear vents, wireless charging pads for both front and rear passengers, a panoramic sunroof, and an auto-dimming internal rearview mirror.
Kia is likely to equip the Clavis EV with six airbags, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera with blind-spot monitoring, and tyre pressure monitoring. In addition, Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) may be included, such as adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, driver attention warning, and autonomous emergency braking.
The Carens Clavis EV is expected to come with a 51.4 kWh battery pack offering a claimed range of up to 490 km on the MIDC cycle. A smaller 42 kWh variant may also be introduced, offering a slightly reduced range of approximately 400 km. While official powertrain figures are yet to be confirmed, the EV is likely to use a front-wheel-drive setup with output in the range of 135 to 170 PS.

EV startup Matter launches ₹1.93 lakh Aera 5000+ e-bike, eyes IPO
Electric vehicle startup Matter, which launched its Aera 5000+ electric motorcycle in Mumbai priced at ₹1.93 lakh, is positioning the product as a direct alternative to internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles in the 150–200cc segment. Backed by US-based venture firm Helena, Matter says its product is designed not to compete with electric vehicles (EVs) but with petrol bikes. Capital 2B, Japan Airlines & Translink Innovation Fund (Canada), SB Invest, and othe₹are investo₹in the startup. Matter aims to take on ICE rivals like the Yamaha R15 V4 (₹1.85 lakh), TVS Apache RTR 160 (₹1.18 lakh), Bajaj Pulsar NS200 (₹1.45 lakh), and KTM 200 Duke (₹2.06 lakh). The Ahmedabad-based startup was in pilot mode until June 2025 and is now expanding across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala. It aims to scale up from seven dealerships currently to 150 dealerships by the end of 2026, with a sales target of 50,000 units next year. The company expects to break even in the next three to five yea₹with a monthly run rate of 20,000–25,000 units. The Aera 5000+ comes with a 5 kWh battery and a certified range of 172 km, along with a four-speed manual gearbox—which the company claims is a first for an electric motorcycle in India. The company recently closed a $35 million Series B round, bringing its total funding to $75 million. Matter's post-money valuation now stands at $230 million. It plans to raise an additional $125 million in multiple tranches over the next three to four years, as part of a broader $200 million fundraising plan. 'The funds will be used to expand production, deepen research and development, and scale distribution,' Lalbhai said. 'We are targeting a public listing in the next three to four yea₹once we hit our revenue and growth milestones.' Matter has filed over 350 patents, with core components like the battery pack, gearbox, and powertrain developed in-house. Although the current Aera model uses rare-earth magnets, the company is working with a US-based firm on non-rare-earth motor technologies to mitigate future supply risks. 'India's motorcycle market is largely untouched by electrification. As more consume₹get options like Aera, we believe adoption will accelerate much like it did in scooters,' Lalbhai added.

With the Carens Clavis EV, Kia is looking to tap into the growing demand for electric family vehicles by offering a blend of space, range, and premium features in a relatively accessible package. Here are its five key highlights: Although the EV version shares its overall styling with the ICE-powered Clavis, it features several electric-specific updates. These include a closed front grille with an integrated charging port, full-width LED DRLs at the front, and new 17-inch aero alloy wheels. An underbody cover enhances efficiency, while the ground clearance has been raised slightly to 200 mm, 5 mm more than the petrol version. The Carens Clavis EV is available with two battery options. The larger 51.4 kWh battery promises a claimed range of 490 km on a single charge, while the smaller 42 kWh battery offers an ARAI-certified range of 404 km. Both variants are powered by a single electric motor that produces 169 bhp and 255 Nm of torque, enabling the MPV to accelerate from 0 to 100 kmph in 8.4 seconds. Inside, the Carens Clavis EV offers a redesigned cabin with an emphasis on space and technology. The gear selector has been moved to the steering column, freeing up space on the centre console. A 26.6-inch panoramic display integrates the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. The MPV also gets features like ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, wireless charging, an air purifier, and one-touch tumble-down second-row seats. Kia has also equipped the model with Level 2 ADAS and over 90 connected car features. The Carens Clavis EV is currently the most affordable three-row electric vehicle on sale in India. While it doesn't have a direct rival yet, it will compete with other electric SUVs and crossovers such as the Tata Curvv EV, Hyundai Creta Electric, MG ZS EV, and the upcoming Tata Harrier EV. The electric MPV supports both 7.4 kW and 11 kW AC charging options. Kia says over 100 of its dealerships are equipped with fast-charging infrastructure, and buyers will have access to more than 11,000 public charging stations across the country. The Carens Clavis EV is backed by an 8-year or 160,000 km warranty on the battery pack.

The company has a 25,000-strong R&D team in Bengaluru, which is co-developing technologies with Indian carmakers, focusing on functionality, user acceptance, and software-defined architecture. Pillin also highlighted the rise of ADAS as a dominant megatrend, driven by AI-led innovation, and emphasised Bosch's flexible integration strategy — combining in-house hardware and software with third-party components where needed. Q: Can you tell us about the global progress of ADAS at Bosch and what India can expect in the coming years? A: The pace of ADAS innovation varies significantly across regions. In China, things are evolving at an incredible pace due to customer openness to new technologies and a dynamic market. Europe is gradually catching up. India, however, holds massive potential — it's one of the fastest-growing automotive markets. Indian OEMs are increasingly climbing the innovation curve, and we're actively working with many of them. I was in Bengaluru recently and witnessed, first-hand, the tremendous opportunity here. Q: India is a price-sensitive market. How do you plan to bring advanced driver assistance technologies to the mass market here? A: That's a key focus area for us. We understand that affordability is crucial in India. That's why we're developing a cost-effective, single-camera ADAS solution with core features like lane departure warning, emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. It's designed specifically for Indian conditions — both economically and functionally. Q: How does this single-camera system compare with ADAS setups in China and Europe? A: The difference is stark. In China, some vehicles now come equipped with 11 video cameras and up to 5 radars, supported by powerful computing platforms. That's overkill for Indian conditions. A key challenge here is the lack of lane markings, which many western systems rely on. For instance, a colleague told me he was constantly annoyed by unnecessary alerts from a western ADAS system in Bengaluru. This shows we must customise ADAS to real-world Indian road behaviour — not just adapt existing models. Q: Considering the road complexities in India, aren't there even more use cases for ADAS here? A: Absolutely. Indian roads are chaotic and unpredictable, which ironically creates greater demand for intelligent driver-assist features. We're tapping into this potential with our 25,000-strong R&D team in Bengaluru. We collaborate closely with Indian OEMs, build prototypes, test real-world scenarios, and iterate rapidly. The goal is not just to launch technology — it's to ensure it's appreciated and used, by making driving genuinely safer and more comfortable. Q: You spoke about Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs). How is Bosch adapting to that shift, particularly in India? A: The transformation to SDVs is a fundamental industry shift. At Bosch, we're working to standardise the interface layer — the one I highlighted in my presentation in dark blue. If we can open-source key parts of the vehicle architecture, software deployment can become scalable globally — regardless of the hardware, number of cameras, or compute power. Q: Are you collaborating with Indian OEMs, global OEMs in India, or both? A: Both. We've been a long-standing partner for OEMs in India, and we're now bringing our latest technologies to both local manufacturers and global players operating here. Q: How many Indian car models are expected to feature Bosch's ADAS systems in the near future? A: I can't disclose exact numbers — you'd need to ask the OEMs for that. But, I can say we're seeing strong traction. We've moved beyond being just a component supplier to becoming a technology partner across multiple new vehicle programmes. Q: Do you develop everything in-house, or are there collaborations with other companies for sensors and cameras? A: We partner where it makes sense. For our single-camera system, both the logic and the camera can come from Bosch. But, we're flexible — some OEMs prefer to source hardware separately. Our system is designed to work with those inputs and layer Bosch's AI capabilities on top. Q: What is Bosch's role in enabling Level-2 ADAS in India? A: We act as a full system supplier — offering ECUs, software stacks, integration, cameras, radars — the complete package. But, we're also modular. If OEMs choose third-party components, we can integrate those too. In India, most OEMs want a trusted partner who can handle end-to-end delivery, and that's where we shine. Q: Are you open to integrating services and components from other ecosystem players? A: Definitely. While we provide end-to-end systems as a Tier 1 supplier, we're equally capable of integrating external sensors or third-party services based on open interface standards. This hybrid approach works especially well in India, where flexibility and reliability are paramount. Q: ADAS seems to be progressing faster than other automotive megatrends like electrification or connectivity. Why? A: One major reason is the entry of AI and tech companies into the automotive space is accelerating innovation. Customer expectations are rising as a result. But, it's important to note: applying general-purpose AI to vehicles isn't simple. Automotive-grade safety and reliability demand domain-specific, highly tested implementations. Q: Lastly, how do you see India's role in Bosch's global ADAS ambitions? A: India is critical. While I can't share specific investment figures, I can say that our AI development team in Bengaluru is working on global ADAS solutions. The energy and talent of the young engineers here are remarkable — they're developing software that goes into vehicles around the world. India isn't just a market for us; it's a technology and innovation centre.
