Madhya Pradesh League a platform where young players get the opportunity to prove themselves, says Rewa Jaguars owner
The Madhya Pradesh League will begin on June 12 at the Shrimant Madhavrao Scindia Cricket Stadium in Shankarpur, Gwalior. With a vision that extends beyond just participation, Rewa Jaguars owners are focused on creating a franchise that nurtures players both on and off the field.
'I want to create a franchise where players are getting benefited both in terms of their livelihood and in terms of their opportunities, because my vision is not only to participate in MPL but at the same time give them personalised coaching and make them mentally and physically fit. So, my thought was always that if players stay with the franchise, then they can grow even more,' said Alok Birla, owner of Rewa Jaguars, as quoted by the MPL press release.
'In life everybody wants to have an opportunity where they want to showcase their talent or showcase their calibre or showcase their skills. This happens everywhere in life. So, Madhya Pradesh League is something where it's a platform, it's an opportunity, it's a tournament where you can get yourself exposed for the next levels,' he added.
The owner of Rewa Jaguars cited the example of Shivam Shukla, who hogged the limelight during the last season of the Madhya Pradesh League, and was eventually brought by Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as a replacement for Rovman Powell in IPL 2025 last month.
'Like Shivam Shukla is the right answer to this question. Last year, he played in the Madhya Pradesh League, and now he is playing for KKR. So, that's how everybody looks for playing the Madhya Pradesh League,' said Alok Birla.
'It's a platform given by Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association where things are going to be very good for all those young talents who are born and brought up in Madhya Pradesh towards cricket,' he added.
Even Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had described the Madhya Pradesh League as a launchpad for young players in recent address in Gwalior during the inauguration of the second season of the Madhya Pradesh League.
This time there will be a women's league as well for the second season of Madhya Pradesh League. Chambal Ghariyals, Bhopal Wolves and Bundelkhand Bulls are the teams that will compete in the women's league.
Speaking about his vision of investing in the women's cricket, Mr Alok Birla said, 'As of now I don't have any, you know, thought process of buying any or owning any women's team. But yes, I am very much dedicated to work for girls, which I am doing by promoting two girls in Indore, who are playing in Dev Academy.'
Organised by Gwalior Division Cricket Association (GDCA) under the aegis of MP Cricket Association, the MPL will get underway from June 12.

Can Tilak Varma hold off spin-bashing Shreyas Iyer from the India T20I No 3 spot?
The Indian T20 machinery is currently infused with such astonishing variety that the team management will find themselves in a tight spot confirming their wonts and attributes, as the road to a world title defence firmly begins with the Asia Cup in September. Armed with possibilities, the top order could face the stiffest competition, starting with the continental event in the UAE. Batting maverick Suryakumar Yadav's side can, at best, field three specialist batters, including himself, with the arrival of head coach Gautam Gambhir and cut-throat competition demanding more floating all-rounders and secondary skill-sets. Despite his stunning ascent with three T20I tons in the last calendar year, Sanju Samson's opening spot will spur a lot of interest in India's immediate assignment after the English pacers winded him down in January. The immense competition among dazzling names in the circuit will also be the reason why southpaw Tilak Varma could find himself between a rock and a hard place, despite a breakout season in the India blues at No. 3. Even as IPL exploits no longer guarantee a spot in the India squad, the league continues to be an enticing hotbed for selection dynamics, a fine meter to gauge radical shifts among batters on the national radar. It is exactly why openers Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal will have to bide time behind Abhishek Sharma and Samson to wriggle their way back in. The IPL 2025 season also exemplifies why a marauding Shreyas Iyer was a major summer takeaway, and a T20I recall might bolster India's collective top-order firepower to the next level. But, is there room for the 30-year-old in the top 4? With captain Suryakumar moving down to No. 4 and keeper-batter Samson and the deadly Abhishek pinned up top, Iyer could draw competition with Tilak, who has had a largely forgettable 2025 season thus far. From July 2024 onwards, spinners from Full-Member nations have been worst-hit by India's spin charge, conceding 1296 runs at 9.67 runs per over, significantly placed ahead of a surging Australia (8.97). While the Aussies are refurbishing their roster with towering batters and their long levers, the Indians bank on a band of innate bats, attuned to the spin takedown manual. With the Asia Cup likely to witness tacky pitches and the showpiece T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka also slated to add a spring in the stride of the spinners next year, the defending champions may just be the juggernaut that oppositions would grow to fear the most. Tilak's bittersweet returns in this regard could shake up the T20I top-order on the whole. In 17 T20s this year, Tilak's scoring rates against spin have surprisingly plunged to 121.42 (168 balls) from 152.55 (210 balls) in 2024. Surrounded by mighty middle-overs spin dominators in Samson, Abhishek and skipper Suryakumar, Tilak may feel the pinch and the need to amp up his strike rates from the middling zone to fend off an Iyer challenge. The spin-devouring Iyer not only flattened middle-overs bowling, but also ironed out chinks against high pace in the 2025 season, improving considerably against the short ball. Iyer's supreme haul against spin in the middle-overs fetched Punjab Kings 171 runs at a 154.05 SR, with his overall 164.81 strike rate in the phase only bettered by Suryakumar among Indian batters in the IPL season. Tilak's striking, meanwhile, meandered down to 131.55 for 246 runs in the phase, even slower against spin at 121.84 for 145 runs. Even if Iyer isn't exactly back in the equation, the No. 3 race could even boil down to a tussle between Tilak and Samson, should Suryakumar persist at No. 4. In his brief run at the top, Samson's all-out approach marked a pertinent weakness against high pace early in the innings during the T20Is in South Africa, a mercurial series where he ended up with scores of 107, 0, 0 and 109*. Against England at home, the Kerala batter could not break free from the pace curse with five successive dismissals against the short ball, jotting another bewildering streak where he failed to cross 26. India's rigid choices of back-up keepers in the finishing mould in Jitesh Sharma and Dhruv Jurel would also add a layer of complexity if Samson fails to seal a top-three spot. Currently the lead wicketkeeper-batter in the T20I set-up, Samson would not be far off from a run at number three either for his prolific IPL record in the position over the years. He continues to hold the most runs (1952) at No.3 since 2020 in the IPL, posing a higher average (38.27) than Suryakumar (35.17) and Iyer (36.03) while also smoking 99 sixes (highest). For the belligerent show to roll on without immediate hassles, India will hope that Samson and Tilak/Iyer form specific answers to two out of three top-order slots, preventing another commotion of rehearsals to find their world-beating combination.

Shubman Gill likely to miss, Yashasvi to get nod in India's Asia Cup squad: Report
India's Test captain Shubman Gill is reportedly set to miss out on selection for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 squad, despite a strong batting performance in the recent Test series against England. According to a report by the Indian Express, the team management and selectors believe that Gill does not currently fit into their T20 plans, making his participation in the tournament Asia Cup 2025, which will be held in the UAE, is scheduled to begin on 9 September and will follow the T20 format. India are set to open their campaign against the UAE on 10 September. The selection panel, led by Ajit Agarkar, is expected to announce the squad in Mumbai on Tuesday, 19 Jaiswal is reportedly favoured to take the role of the third opener. IPL FY2025 earnings: Revenues dip across teams; RCB sees steepest slide while LSG slips into losses
Mumbai Indians , Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), and Lucknow SuperGiants (LSG) reported revenue declines in FY25, according to the Economic Times. Reliance Industries-owned Indiawin Sports, which operates Mumbai Indians, posted a profit of Rs 84 crore, down from Rs 109 crore in FY24. Revenue slipped to Rs 697 crore from Rs 737 crore. Diageo-owned RCB reported revenue of Rs 514 crore in FY25, compared to Rs 649 crore the previous year, citing fewer IPL matches. Profits fell to Rs 140 crore from Rs 222 crore. The franchise declared an interim dividend of Rs 120 crore and continues to field a women's team in the WPL. 'However, the company's FY2025 revenues will also depend on how many matches of IPL 2025 are played in Q4 FY2025,' ICRA noted in its rating report. For LSG, RPSG Sports reported turnover of Rs 557 crore with losses of Rs 72 crore, against a Rs 59 crore profit on Rs 694 crore revenue in FY24. The group pays Rs 709 crore annually in franchise fees until 2031. 'LSG has developed a strong fan base and enjoys healthy ticket revenues. It has also garnered attractive sponsorships.
