Ukraine drone attack injures train station employee in Russia's Voronezh, governor says
(Reuters) -A railway employee was injured and a power line damaged by a Ukrainian drone attack at a station in Russia's Voronezh region, the regional governor said on Sunday. "According to preliminary information, a railway station track technician was injured in one of the municipalities," Alexander Gusev said of the overnight attack on the Telegram messaging app. "He has been hospitalised." Gusev said the attack caused train delays, but by Sunday morning trains were running back on schedule. The Russian defence ministry, which reports only how many drones its units destroy not how many Ukraine launches, said on the Telegram messaging app that nine drones were downed over the Voronezh region in Russia's southwest. In total, the ministry said, its defence systems destroyed 46 Ukrainian drones overnight, all of them in regions west of Moscow. Reuters could not independently verify the Russian reports. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine. Kyiv says that its strikes inside Russia are in answer to Moscow's continued attacks on Ukraine and are aimed at destroying infrastructure key to Russia's war efforts. The reports of the attacks came after a summit between the U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin yielded no agreement on ending Russia's war in Ukraine. Trump said on Saturday that Kyiv should make a deal with Moscow to end the war because "Russia is a very big power, and they're not." Time for an elite school in Keningau: Ex-Principal
Published on: Sunday, August 17, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 Text Size: KENINGAU: It is time to set up an elite school here, said former principal Gundohing Peter Paun. Peter, who was also a senior officer of the Sabah Education Department, said Keningau is the largest town in the interior region and is rapidly developing. 'Therefore, there is a need to build an elite school to accommodate intelligent, bright and selected students in an elite environment. 'With the establishment of this elite school, they will not have to leave Keningau, and all the best students from the interior can be gathered in the district,' he said. Peter, who is also a prospective candidate for KDM in Liawan, made these remarks after participating in a grassroots programme visiting several villages in the Liawan constituency, including the Keningau central market. 'This is what needs to be implemented in the Keningau area, alongside various other development agendas, if given the opportunity to become the representative for Liawan,' he added. Elite schools refer to institutions known for their excellence in academics and extra-curricular activities, often associated with better facilities and more comprehensive programmes. This term can also refer to fully residential schools (SBP) or cluster schools of excellence. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? ‘Sabah for Sabahans' is not a threat
Published on: Sunday, August 17, 2025 Published on: Sun, Aug 17, 2025 Text Size: 'Sabah for Sabahans' is not a threat; it's a wake-up call. AHAMD Zahid Hamidi's call for Sabahans to look beyond the 'Sabah for Sabahans' sentiment and embrace national unity may appear, on the surface, as a plea for cohesion. However, such a message is dismissive of the deep historical grievances we Sabahans hold. When a national leader tells Sabahans to move on without first acknowledging or rectifying past injustices, it is not a call for unity but an attempt to sweep uncomfortable truths under the carpet. If national unity is truly the goal, it must be built on accountability, transparency, and mutual respect, not their disdainful expectation that historical wounds will be forgotten for the sake of their political expedience. Of course it is "divisive"—but only in the sense that it is intended to reclaim rightful space for Sabahans to prioritise our own needs. When every community looks after its own interests responsibly, society as a whole becomes stronger. No one can love or serve Sabah better than Sabahans ourselves. These slogans—"Sabah for Sabahans", "Sabah First" aren't acts of exclusion; they are affirmations of identity, autonomy, and the right to chart our own future. 'Sabah for Sabahans' is not a threat; it's a wake-up call. KP Mau The views expressed here are the views of the writer and do not necessarily reflect those of the Daily Express.
