How slain MS deputy Martin Shields' colleagues will honor him and help Jackson-area grads
The basketball event is presented by the Deputy Martin L. Shields Jr. Memorial Foundation in honor of fallen Hinds County Deputy Martin Luther Shields Jr., 37, who was fatally shot on the evening of Feb. 23 while responding to a domestic dispute call at a home on Midway Road in Terry.
Born on July 14, 1987, Shields dedicated his life to serving his community and protecting his fellow citizens. This was evident in the hundreds of people who showed up at Shields' celebration of life service to pay their respects, including Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves.
Teams scheduled to participate in the event include the Hinds County Sheriff's Department, Jackson Fire Department, Jackson Police Department, Ridgeland Police Department and Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Cost: $5 for kids 12 and under. $20 for general admission

All proceeds will go toward scholarships for graduating seniors in the Jackson Metro area.

It's fair to assume that trading for him would likely require a meaningful return. The Bruins have been busy adding players this offseason, and with their roster shifting under new head coach Marco Sturm, Zacha's place is no longer guaranteed. 70-year-old man killed in fireworks accident in Wareham, police say
A 70-year-old man was killed in an apparent fireworks accident on July 4th in Wareham, Massachusetts. It happened at 9:19 p.m. on Beach Street near Swift's Beach in Wareham Friday night. Police said the man, Robert Spagnuolo of Wareham, suffered a facial injury from a firework and died at the scene. According to witnesses, Spagnuolo was setting off fireworks at the beach when one exploded in his face. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death. Wareham Police, the Plymouth County District Attorney's Office, the State Police Bomb Squad and the Massachusetts Fire Marshal's Office are all investigating the incident. On July 2, two people were injured in an explosion in Mashpee on Cape Cod when the fireworks for a show at the New Seabury Country Club hours before they were supposed to go off. Massachusetts is the only state in the U.S. that prohibits the possession, use, and sale of fireworks without a permit and certification. This also includes fireworks that legally bought in another state. According to the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services, between 2020 and 2024, more than 200 people were treated for burns and other injuries associated with fireworks. They added in the past five years, there's been more than 550 fires and explosions involving fireworks in Massachusetts.

Suspected vehicle found in fatal Crystal Lake crash, police say
The McHenry County Sheriff's Office on Saturday morning gave an update on the deadly hit-and-run crash that left a 15-year-old boy dead in Crystal Lake. According to the office, the vehicle believed to be involved in the crash on Wednesday has been found. Around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, two 15-year-old boys were walking their bikes back from a fishing trip when a car going 40 mph slammed into one of them from behind at Terra Cotta Road and Deering Oaks Lane. Police said the driver fled the scene. The McHenry County Coroner's office identified the victim as 15-year-old Nick Laureys. An autopsy determined Nick died from blunt force injuries. The office said there are no additional suspects, and no charges have been filed. They plan to release more information as it becomes available. The video above is from a previous report.
