Teenager fights stigma around girls and sport

Yahoo3 days ago
A Jersey teenager has set up an event to inspire girls between the ages of eight and 18 years old to take part in all sports.
Event organiser and young worker for Jersey Youth Service, Lauren, 15, said the event was about breaking barriers and the stigma facing girls in sport.
The free event, called Every Girl Moves, will take place at the sports facility at Les Quennevais School on Monday.
Lauren said "everybody is welcome".
Lauren, who joined the youth service in Year 4, said it was a chance to try out new sports that some people might not have known was available to them.
"When we were organising this event I didn't even know there was a Jersey cricket team - apparently they are really good and keep winning competitions," she said.
'Get people involved'
"It is really cool to learn about different sports in the island."
At the beginning of Year 7, Lauren said she joined an all-boy football training session before finding another group called the Wonderers, which she is still a part of.
She said: "We are trying to get rid of the stigma and get more people involved.
"I know most people want to do a sport but they think it's a boys sport or worry about what people will think of them."

The event, which will have various sports organisations attending such as basketball, fencing, kickboxing and skateboarding, among others, takes place from 10:00 until 15:00 BST.
"There's plenty to try out," added Lauren.
Youth Worker Josh Twohig-Jones said Lauren was the "driving force" behind Every Girl Moves.
He said Lauren ran consultations around the island at various youth clubs and schools to encourage as many girls to attend the event and try a new sport.

Bryan Mbeumo completes move to Manchester United from Brentford

Manchester United have completed the long-awaited signing of Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo for a fee rising to £71million. Nearly seven weeks after seeing their first offer rebuffed, the Red Devils finally have their man and the 25-year-old has signed a deal until 2030 with the option of a further year. Mbeumo leaves Brentford for an initial £65m fee that the PA news agency understands could rise by a further £6m should certain add-on clauses related to team and player be achieved. 'As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up,' the Cameroon international said. 'My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here, learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.

Fox Sees New Ad Dollars for Sports, News, Streaming in Latest Upfront Close

Fears that Trump tariffs would dampen TV's annual 'upfront' advertising market appear to have been overblown — at least for those media companies with a strong sports portfolio. Fox Corp. won new dollars to its sports schedule, Tubi streaming service and Fox News operations during the current 'upfront' market, according to the company, which has wrapped the majority of its negotiations. During this annual period, U.S. media companies look to secure the bulk of the ad dollars Madison Avenue will commit to their next cycle of programming.' More from Variety Fox Sports Inks Broad Pact With Barstool Sports, Dave Portnoy to Become Regular On-Air Contributor NBCU Says Surge in Sports Ads Boosts Upfront Sales Haul Fox News Strikes Deal to Put 'Ruthless' Podcast on Digital Roster 'The Fox portfolio of industry leading Sports, News and Entertainment content delivered double-digit revenue growth in the Upfront for the second year in a row,' said Jeff Collins, president of advertising sales, marketing and brand partnerships for Fox Corp., in a prepared statement. 'Unprecedented audience growth across the Fox portfolio has driven better outcomes for our trusted client partners. We thank them for their continued commitment and remain dedicated to making every second of their investment with us count.' Fox saw the bulk of its growth from consumer-products giants, pharmaceutical marketers and financial-services firms. The volume of dollars put behind sports programming rose by a double-digit percentage, according to people familiar with negotiations, exceeding $2 billion overall, not including the World Cup, which did not take place last year, but for which Fox has U.S. rights in 2026. Advertisers raised the volume of dollars committed to Tubi by 35%, these people said. Programming from the company's Fox News Media secured a volume increase in the double-digit percentage range, according to these people, as advertisers followed the larger audiences viewing Fox News Channel. Fox News saw the number of traditional advertisers on its roster rise, these people said. Like NBCUniversal, which revealed robust upfront results last week, Fox benefitted from a broad sports portfolio that includes one of the medium's most-watched Sunday NFL broadcasts as well as next year's World Cup and post-season Major League Baseball games. Sports has been key to the ad-sales game so far this year. There is no other programming format that continues to dependably generate the large, simultaneous viewing audiences that advertisers and distributors crave. TV networks favor the upfront market because it allows them to build support for their programs well ahead of their debut. Still, the advertising bazaar has been tougher to navigate in recent years as more people gravitate to streaming video and other means of accessing their favorite programs, movies, news and sports events. Ad commitments for the most recent cycle of primetime broadcast TV fell 3.5% in 2024's upfront market, to $9.34 billion, according to Media Dynamics Inc., while commitments for primetime on cable tumbled 4.8%, to $9.065 billion. Meanwhile, ad commitments to streaming video hubs rose a noticeable 35.3%, hiking to $11.1 billion from $8.2 billion in the previous market. The amount committed to streaming video for the most recent TV season was greater than that devoted to primetime broadcast or primetime cable — a first for the industry. Phil Mickelson Makes History at Open Championship

Phil Mickelson Makes History at Open Championship originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Phil Mickelson opened the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush with a 1‑under-par 70, navigating intermittent rain and firm winds in the first round. He followed with a 1-over-par 72 on Friday. That even-par score was enough for Mickelson to head to the weekend. By doing so, Mickelson recorded his 103rd cut made in men's major championships, moving past Gary Player and into second on the list for the most all time. Since Mickelson's major debut at the 1990 U.S. Open, he has appeared in 127 majors. This year's Open moves him into a tie with Raymond Floyd, for the fifth-most appearances in a major. Only Jack Nicklaus, with 131 cuts made, remains ahead of Mickelson. Nicklaus set that benchmark over a span stretching from the 1957 U.S. Open through the 2000 Masters. Nicklaus leads the list with the most appearances in the majors: 164. Both marks are likely to stand as the measure of career consistency for decades. Mickelson has also displayed exceptional consistency. His 103 cuts made in 127 major starts is an 81% success rate. That even surpasses Nicklaus, who had a 79.8% success rate of making the cut in majors. Mickelson also produced a personal-best streak of 30 consecutive cuts made in majors between the 1999 PGA Championship and the 2007 Masters. Tiger Woods and Nicklaus, with 39, share the mark for consecutive cuts made in a major. At Royal Portrush, Mickelson also notched his 21st made cut in 30 Open Championship appearances. In June, Mickelson expressed a desire to continue playing the majors if he qualifies. So, he may not be done in any of these categories just yet.
