Airfares for Turkey, Azerbaijan fall amid boycott calls over Pak support

India Today14-05-2025

An online campaign is gaining momentum for the boycott of tourism to Turkey and Azerbaijan for supporting Pakistan during 'Operation Sindoor', and its impact is evident. The rapid cancellation of planned trips has resulted in a 30% dip in flight prices to Istanbul and Baku. The focus is on urging citizens to avoid products, services, and destinations that trigger a broader economic impact.advertisementAn analysis of over 3 lakh posts by India Today's Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) team reveals Turkey as the primary target of the boycott calls.
Since Monday, two days after the cessation of firing was announced, hashtags such as #BoycottTurkey, #BoycottAzerbaijan, and #BoycottTurkeyAzerbaijan have been trending in India. Other hashtags include #BoycottTurkeyTourism and #TurkeySupportsTerror accumulated nearly 10,000 and 2200 posts, respectively, in the last one week.

Chatter on X also saw users recommending Greece or Armenia as alternative travel destinations, with many posting confirmations of cancelled trips to Turkey and Azerbaijan in response to the boycott calls.Travel platforms like Ixigo, Pickyourtrail and MakeMyTrip have announced measures to discourage tourism to destinations in Turkey and Azerbaijan.Notably, cancellations of scheduled travels to Turkey began well before the social media campaign started. Many influencers called on people to cancel their Turkey travel plans after Ankara supported Pakistan over Kashmir following the Pahalgam terror attack.FLIGHT PRICES DROPAn analysis of Google Flight Trends data reveals a significant drop in airfares. While flight prices fluctuate based on various factors, one consistent trend is clear: the longer you wait to book your ticket before your travel date, the cheaper the fare tends to be.
To illustrate this, India Today tracked flight prices for the upcoming Sunday, May 18, 2025, over the past 45 days. For example, if you had booked a round-trip ticket from New Delhi to Istanbul before April 22 – the day of the Pahalgam terror attack – the price would have been around Rs 41,000. However, booking the same flight on May 14 would cost Rs 34,752.advertisementInterestingly, fares to Istanbul continued to drop after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed strong support for Pakistan, bringing the price down to Rs 28,482. This is Rs 7,290 lower than the usual fare.A similar trend was observed for flights to Azerbaijan. The price dropped from Rs 49,298 to Rs 35,517 after the Pahalgam attack, and later increased slightly to Rs 37,762 when Azerbaijan expressed its support for Pakistan on May 2.TURKEY'S SUPPORTThe online furore is particularly strong against Turkey, which didn't just express support for Pakistan but has also been supplying weapons to Islamabad.Pakistan used Turkish-origin drones against India during 'Operation Sindoor'.In mid-2024, media reports said Turkey imposed a comprehensive ban on the sale of defence equipment to India in favour of Pakistan.Must Watch

Rs 125 crore factory complex near medical device park to boost startups

Noida: Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) has launched a tender for a flatted factory complex spanning 38,665 sqm near its 350-acre medical device park in Sector 28. The Rs 125-crore complex is to be completed within 24 months and is expected to boost the entry of MSMEs and startups in the area. The complex, proposed to be a five-storey industrial space offering plug-and-play units with built-in utilities and shared amenities, like cafeterias, exhibition halls, parking space, retail shops and lifts, will offer 252 office units on a rental basis to startups to lower entry barriers. YEIDA CEO Arun Veer Singh said the complex is among the 11 factory complexes proposed off the Yamuna Expressway. "Flatted factory complexes support the state's vision of becoming a leading industrial hub with a focus on MSMEs and startups. Around 3,000 affordable and ready-to-use industrial spaces are currently in the pipeline, and at least 75% of these units will be reserved for MSMEs and 25% for startups," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo TOI earlier reported that a factory complex is to come up in Sector 10 to support the 206-acre electronics manufacturing cluster (EMC) with 228 units, while two large plots—20,234 sqm and 44,515 sqm—have also been earmarked for flatted factories in the YEIDA areas. Each of these complexes is proposed to be tailored for proposed industrial parks like medical device, semiconductor, IT, apparel and toy. Noida Entrepreneurs Association (NEA) vice president Sudhir Shrivastava told TOI that factory complexes are needed across Noida, Greater Noida and Yamuna authority areas as the govt positions the region as India's next manufacturing hotspot. "Setting up a factory involves significant financial investment, besides approvals from multiple departments such as the Authority, power, fire and others, which often deters entrepreneurs. A factory complex addresses these challenges, as the Authority takes care of the development and necessary clearances. This allows micro and small enterprises, typically employing between 5 to 20 people, to rent space and start operations with ease," he said. NEA has 3,600 registered members in the city, dealing in different businesses. While Noida does not have any designated factory complexes, the concept has found standing in the city, too. With high land and rental costs, several small-scale industries such as furniture, handicrafts, and packaging currently operate out of smaller office buildings in sectors 6, 9, and 10, while some factories operate out of UPSIDA industrial area in Surajpur.
