ED raids Karnataka Cong MLA, others in illegal iron ore export case

money laundering
investigation against the legislator in a case related to alleged
illegal export of iron ore
, official sources said.
At least 15 premises in Karnataka, Goa and Mumbai are being searched under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (
PMLA
), the sources said.

Sail, according to the sources, has been accused of exporting
illegally mined iron ore
which was seized by forest officials at Belekeri port in Karwar, Karnataka.
This caused "loss" to government exchequer for an amount of about Rs 38 crore but the actual value of illegally exported ore is worth hundreds of crores of rupees, the sources said.

The case originated from a 2010 probe by the Karnataka Lokayukta, which discovered about eight lakh tons of illegally transported iron ore from Bellary to Belekeri port.
The Karnataka High Court last year had ordered the suspension of the seven-year prison sentence of the MLA in this case.
A special court had previously found Sail and others guilty in multiple cases related to the illegal export of iron ore from the Belekeri port.

Harish criticises Cong govt for increasing taxes & burdening people
Hyderabad: Former minister T accused the Congress govt of burdening the public by increasing taxes, contrasting it with the previous BRS administration which, he claimed, had reduced the tax load. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking to reporters in Siddipet on Friday, the ex-minister said that although chief minister Revanth Reddy had announced in the assembly that no additional tax burden would be imposed despite the state's financial crisis, the govt was now raising all taxes one after the other. He pointed out that the Transport Department alone had imposed an additional 2,000 crore burden on citizens by hiking service tax, vehicle service tax, road tax, and motor vehicle tax. "The recent hike in life tax on vehicles by the Congress govt is nothing short of a ruthless blow to poor and middle-class families in . Without any justification, the govt issued GOs 53 and 54, increasing life tax on new vehicles and placing further financial strain on the poor and middle class," said Harish. The BRS leader noted that, in today's economy, even a two-wheeler costs over 1 lakh. Farmers, small traders, and daily wage workers depend on such vehicles for their livelihood. Raising the life tax from 12% to 15% on two-wheelers priced above 1 lakh amounts to extortion, he alleged. He further criticised the govt's plan to increase market values for property registration and its proposal to open more liquor shops in every mandal.

Doc & staffer attacked by patient's attendants at Lady Hardinge hosp
New Delhi: A doctor and an X-ray technician were allegedly assaulted by the attendants of a patient inside the emergency ward of Lady Hardinge Medical College's Sucheta Kriplani Hospital in central Delhi on Wednesday. Nobody has been arrested yet. According to a complaint filed by the hospital's additional medical superintendent, around 1.10am on Aug 13, a 40-year-old woman was brought to the emergency ward with injuries from an alleged fall from a moving train. It added that she was first examined by emergency medical staff, underwent a CT scan and an ultrasound, and was referred to the surgery department. The FIR states that during the treatment, the woman's condition deteriorated and she collapsed. At this point, her attendants, which, according to the complaint, included transgender people, allegedly became aggressive, claiming that doctors were not attending to her properly. They then attacked hospital staff, injuring a 26-year-old postgraduate doctor from the surgery department and a 30-year-old X-ray technician. Both sustained facial and upper body injuries. The disturbance allegedly disrupted emergency services for nearly two hours. The complaint noted that security personnel tried to intervene, but were outnumbered.
