The White House just joined TikTok

While it was President Joe Biden who signed the law that would force ByteDance to sell its stake in TikTok or face a ban, it's his successor, Donald Trump, who has yet to fulfill his promise of arranging a deal to keep TikTok running, legally, in the United States. The current deadline for a deal is September 17th. Still, it hasn't stopped Trump's administration from creating @WhiteHouse on TikTok, which published its first post on Tuesday night: a video celebrating Trump's accomplishments. The ban has only seen TikTok shut down in the US for one day, and its impact has been delayed three times. The first time was in January, when Trump took office and signed an executive order delaying enforcement of the ban for 75 days; then there was another delay in April, after a potential deal fell through due to Trump's harsh tariffs against China, and then in June, when he stated that he believed Chinese President Xi Jinping was open to a deal if a buyer emerged. While Trump tried to ban TikTok in 2020, his stance softened during his re-election campaign once his team learned how many supporters Trump had on the platform. In 2024, the Trump campaign launched its own official account, @TeamTrump, and quickly dominated the platform, getting more followers and views on their content than former Vice President Kamala Harris's now-dormant campaign account — 2.8 billion to 2.2 billion, according to journalist Kyle Tharp. A Republican digital operative close to the campaign heavily credited Trump, a former reality TV star, for his ability to generate attention-grabbing moments that could be transformed into viral content. 'TikTok is primarily an entertainment app,' he previously told The Verge, 'and our usage of it was just significantly more savvy than [the Democrats].' Although the legality of and ulterior motives behind a TikTok ban remain a serious question, the Trump administration, for now, appears to find utility in maintaining an account on the platform. 'Why would I want to get rid of TikTok?' Trump said on Truth Social in January, sharing a post about the billions of views his campaign account continued to rack up. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt repeated this stance after the government account was launched. 'President Trump's message dominated TikTok during his presidential campaign,' she said in a statement to The Verge, 'and we're excited to build upon those successes and communicate in a way no other administration has before.' DOL once again set to tackle joint employer, independent contractor regulations

This story was originally published on HR Dive. To receive daily news and insights, subscribe to our free daily HR Dive newsletter. The White House published last week a list of several forthcoming regulatory efforts to be conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor, according to a web page previously viewed by HR Dive, but details on specific items were unavailable Monday after they appeared to be taken offline for website maintenance. For example, DOL listed a regulatory action on the subject of employee or independent contractors classification status under the Fair Labor Standards Act as being in the proposed rule stage. But a link to view more details about the action returned a notice that the site, which belongs to the White House Office of Management and Budget's Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, would 'be back shortly' after maintenance at press time. OIRA similarly appeared to confirm that DOL would address topics such as joint employer status under the FLSA, the application of the FLSA to domestic service workers, and disclosure requirements for retirement plans under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act. Each of these items touches regulatory areas previously addressed by the Biden administration and targeted for reversal by the Trump administration. DOL had already posted a bulletin to field staff directing employees not to enforce the Biden-era independent contractor rule, for instance, and instead to apply earlier enforcement guidelines in certain matters. Both Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer as well as Deputy Secretary of Labor Keith Sonderling said during their respective confirmation hearings before the U.S. Senate that they would reevaluate the Biden administration's independent contractor and joint employer rules. Meanwhile, DOL in May told the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals that it would no longer defend the last administration's rule allowing retirement plan fiduciaries to consider environmental, social and governance, or ESG, factors when making investment decisions from a lawsuit filed by several Republican-led states. In another shift, DOL in June said it would begin issuing opinion letters through five of its subagencies. The agency's new regime published the first such letter in May on the subject of the independent contractor classification status for virtual marketplace company workers. The letter reinstated a stance DOL previously articulated in a 2019 letter that had been rescinded during the Biden administration.

Wallace claimed a top spot on Trump's hit list Sunday.

MSNBC host Nicolle Wallace used her show on Monday to fire back at Trump after becoming his newest media target, highlighting his biggest 'delusion' and questioning his basic grip on reality. While discussing Trump's meeting with Vladimir Putin on her show Deadline: White House, Wallace declared the president 'is furious at anyone that covers the truth about this story and any others.' Referencing Trump's Sunday morning meltdown about her, in which he'd called her a 'loser, with bad ratings, who was already thrown off of The View,' Wallace added, 'I witnessed that firsthand myself.' The 79-year-old president was in the midst of one of his bizarre social media rampages when his ire turned to Wallace Sunday. 'She will be fired soon! MSNBC IS DEAD!' he also wrote to Truth Social, as supporters jeered at the TV host in the comments below the post, calling her 'Typhoid Mary Nicole Wallace,' and her show 'Clown news.' Wrote one user, 'Nicole Wallace is afraid of losing her job. Get her a Waaambulance.' The posts were apparently retaliation for Wallace's coverage of his failure to secure a ceasefire after meeting with Putin. Solve the daily Crossword
