SVU College of Sciences earns praise from SWAYAM-NPTEL

Tirupati: Sri Venkateswara University (SVU) College of Sciences has earned national recognition from the prestigious SWAYAM-NPTEL platform for its active participation in promoting online education under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. As part of NEP-2020, universities across India have been integrating SWAYAM's online courses, designed and delivered by premier institutions like IITs, NITs, and Central Universities, to enhance students' learning and skills.
SVU has successfully incorporated these courses into its postgraduate curriculum across various semesters. Particularly, in the January–April 2025 semester, Dr Bharathi from the Department of Mathematics played a significant role in coordinating and facilitating SWAYAM courses. Acknowledging her efforts, NPTEL has issued an appreciation certificate to Dr Bharathi for her contributions.
SVU Vice-Chancellor Prof Ch Appa Rao, Registrar Prof M Bhupathi Naidu, and College of Sciences Principal Prof V Padmavathi extended their compliments to Dr Bharathi. They expressed happiness over SVU College of Sciences receiving the 'Best New Local Chapter' award and Bharathi being honoured with the 'SPOC Appreciation Award' by NPTEL.
The officials remarked that SWAYAM courses have been well-received by students at SVU. A significant number of students from the College of Sciences have enrolled in NPTEL courses across the second, third and fourth semesters, successfully acquiring skills and certificates. They also highlighted that SC, ST and differently-abled students benefit from fee concessions for these courses, making them more accessible and inclusive.

The new Class 8 Social Science book, "Exploring Society: India and Beyond" - Part 1, helps students explore medieval Indian history. A Class 5 Mathematics textbook introduces fun and engaging ways to learn math concepts. The Class 8 English textbook "Poorvi" features stories that highlight Indian values and iconic personalities. A new Sanskrit textbook was introduced to foster logical and creative thinking in students. All these textbooks have been designed with the goal of nurturing creativity, compassion, and curiosity in young learners.

Uma Kanjilal appointed first woman VC of IGNOU, 4 decades after university was set up

New Delhi: Uma Kanjilal has been appointed the first woman Vice Chancellor of the Indira Gandhi National Open University ( IGNOU ), four decades after the university was established, according to education ministry officials. "With over 36 years of distinguished service in the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system, Kanjilal brings a wealth of academic leadership, digital innovation, and institutional knowledge to the helm of one of the world's largest open universities," an official said. "She was currently serving as active Vice Chancellor of the university and has previously served as Pro Vice Chancellor of the university (March 2021-July 2024)," the official said. A professor of Library and Information Science since 2003, Kanjilal is nationally recognised for her expertise in e-learning, ICT in libraries, digital libraries, and multimedia courseware development. She is currently the National Coordinator for SWAYAM and SWAYAM PRABHA, the flagship digital education initiatives of the Ministry of Education. Kanjilal has held various leadership roles at the university including Director, Centre for Online Education (2019-2021); Director, Inter-University Consortium for Technology Enabled Flexible Education (2016-2019); Director, Advanced Centre for Informatics and Innovative Learning (2012-2013); Director, School of Social Sciences (2007-2010); and University Librarian (2004-2006). The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has appointed Professor Uma Kanjilal as its new Vice Chancellor, making her the first woman to hold the top post since the university's founding in appointment marks a significant milestone for IGNOU, one of the largest open universities in the world. Professor Kanjilal has been serving as acting Vice Chancellor since July 25, 2024, and previously held the position of Pro Vice Chancellor from March 2021 to July for her contributions to digital education, she has played a vital role in enhancing technology-enabled learning within the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) THREE DECADES OF EXPERIENCE IN ODL With a career spanning over 36 years, Professor Kanjilal has held several key positions within IGNOU. These include Director of the Centre for Online Education, the Inter-University Consortium for Technology-Enabled Flexible Education, and the Advanced Centre for Informatics and Innovative Learning.A Professor of Library and Information Science since 2003, she has consistently worked to bring innovative digital tools into education.
