NFL All-Pro sends blunt message to Shedeur Sanders and Browns QB room

Yahoo21-05-2025

The Cleveland Browns roll into training camp with a crowded quarterback room, including former Colorado standout Shedeur Sanders.
The fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft joins a group that includes veterans Joe Flacco, Deshaun Watson, and Kenny Pickett, as well as fellow rookie Dillon Gabriel, a third-round pick from Oregon. With five quarterbacks on the roster and no clear-cut starter, Cleveland faces major competition at the position heading into the season.

Flacco is projected to start Week 1, but that's not a guarantee either. Given his experience and past success with head coach Kevin Stefanski, it's the most likely scenario. However, the Browns have a history of rotating quarterbacks, with nine starters over the last two seasons. Unfortunately, that trend could continue if injuries or underperformance occur in the initial weeks of the season.
Sanders may find himself on the field before the season ends. His Day 3 draft status means very little after already making an impact in Cleveland.
The situation has even drawn the attention of rival AFC East players. Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward poked fun at the Browns' quarterback surplus of QBs on his podcast, 'Not Just Football,' questioning the logic of rostering so many signal-callers. The comments were in part a response to Cleveland's own jab at Pittsburgh in their schedule release video, which called the Steelers a 'dumpster fire.'
'You don't know what's going on in Cleveland at the quarterback position. But you still have a lot of respect for guys like [Joe] Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Shedeur Sanders, Dillon Gabriel. How many different quarterbacks we got over there?' Heyward said.

Ironically, the Steelers have their own uncertainty at quarterback, with Mason Rudolph, Skylar Thompson, and Ohio State rookie Will Howard competing for the starting role. Aaron Rodgers is still an option at this point, but that would add another veteran into the mix. Sanders was linked to the Steelers before the draft and even took a visit to meet with coaches.

While the Browns may ultimately use the depth at the QB position this year, there's growing speculation that Sanders could rise up the depth chart. Whether as a long-term answer or short-term solution 'Grown' may soon get his opportunity in Cleveland.

MIAMI — The woeful Colorado Rockies have ended their ignominious, record-setting MLB streak of 22 consecutive series losses, which dated to last season. A nervy 3-2 victory at Miami on Tuesday night, highlighted by Hunter Goodman's third home run in two games, gave Colorado two straight victories over the Marlins to ensure the Rockies would leave town with their first series victory since taking two of three games from Arizona in Denver in mid-September.

Rockies' 2nd straight win in Miami ends MLB-record streak of series losses at 22

MIAMI (AP) — The woeful Colorado Rockies have ended their ignominious, record-setting MLB streak of 22 consecutive series losses, which dated to last season. 'That was big-time for the boys, to get that first series win,' Rockies interim manager Warren Schaeffer said. 'Who would've known it wouldn't come until June. But the time is now. I'm happy for them.' Colorado, a major league-worst 11-50, won consecutive games for just the second time this year after beating Atlanta on April 30 and San Francisco the next day. They go for a series sweep against the Marlins on Wednesday. Goodman's teammates seemed unsurprised by his pivotal role in securing the Rockies' first series win of the season. 'He's just raking, and when he's hot, he's one of the best hitters in the game,' centerfielder Brenton Doyle told 'I hope he keeps it up. He's one of my good buddies and that was awesome.' Rockies reliever Seth Halvorsen earned his third save, but only after Heriberto Hernandez drove his 1-1 pitch about 400 feet to left-center, where Doyle made a game-ending, running catch at the wall. 'I'm not going to lie; off the bat, I thought that was a homer,' Schaeffer said. 'But it wasn't, so it's all good. It's the best having (Doyle) in center field.' Excluding one-game series, the Rockies are the fourth team since MLB expansion in 1961 to go 18 series before recording their first series win in a season. The 1987 Padres, 1969 Montreal Expos and 1962 Washington Senators all won their first series of those seasons in their 19th series. Before the Rockies arrived in Miami, they'd gone 3-28 on the road — the worst road mark at that point of season in more than a century — and had not won back-to-back road games since last Sept. 5-6. 'It's nice to get a couple wins. It's good to get that first series win,' Schaffer said. 'Now we just move forward.' ___ AP MLB:
