Youth teams representing Texans, Jags capture NFL flag football titles

Reuters21-07-2025
July 21 - Youth football teams representing the Houston Texans and Jacksonville Jaguars won the High School Girls and 14-Under Boys divisions on Sunday at the second annual NFL Flag Championships in Canton, Ohio.
The Texas Fury Texans shut out the Bad Rabbits Cowboys 19-0 in the girls final after falling in the semifinals of the inaugural tournament.
Game MVP Emery Beckett was 8-for-8 passing for 102 yards and three touchdowns. She connected with Zahara Hill for a 12-yard score, Kelsey Quinn for another first-half TD and Hill again on a 3-yard toss in the game's final five minutes.
Kaitlyn Reynolds and Sonya Chalil recorded interceptions for the Fury defense.
The Bad Rabbits, representing the Dallas Cowboys, defeated AA Select (Philadelphia Eagles) 7-0 in one semifinal, while the Texas Fury edged Conquer (Los Angeles Chargers) 7-6.
On the boys' side, the Jaguars Elite and tournament MVP Brysen Wright posted a 13-0 victory over Showtime, which represented the Atlanta Falcons.
Jaguars quarterback Dalton Motes was 8 of 12 for 108 yards and two touchdowns -- a 30-yarder to Jaiden Barnett and a 15-yarder to Ry'land Williams.
Wright broke up a pass late in the game when Showtime went for it on fourth down. Wright, 14, scored 10 TDs in seven tournament games, including a tumbling one-handed catch in traffic that went viral and caught the attention of NFL stars Patrick Mahomes and Bijan Robinson, among others.
Showtime was 1 of 6 on third-down conversions despite recording more passing yards (117-104). Showtime QB Januel Morales was 8 of 13 for 73 yards and one interception, while teammate Vincenzo Mena was 4 of 10 for 51 yards.
The Jaguars Elite eliminated RFP (Buffalo Bills) 41-12 in one semifinal, while Showtime topped High Intensity (San Francisco 49ers) 13-7 in the other.
The three-day competition involved about 300 teams representing all 32 NFL clubs across 12 divisions. The event also featured international contests with eight teams traveling from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Great Britain, Mexico and Puerto Rico.
Flag football continues to surge in popularity ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics, where it will debut as an official sport in Los Angeles. The NFL announced in May that its players will be allowed to compete.

Cal Raleigh passes Aaron Judge as AL MVP favorite

July 28 - Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh has taken over as the American League MVP favorite with his closest rival, Aaron Judge, heading to the injured list. Raleigh hit home runs in consecutive games over the weekend to extend his major league lead to 41. It is already seven more than his career high, and Raleigh has tied Todd Hundley (1996) for the most home runs in a season by a switch-hitting catcher. Judge has led the MVP race most of the season, but the New York Yankees slugger will miss an undetermined amount of time due to a flexor strain. The two-time AL MVP currently paces the majors in batting average (.342), on-base percentage (.449) and slugging percentage (.711). However, Raleigh has now passed Judge for the AL RBI lead, 86 to 85, and is only one behind Arizona's Eugenio Suarez for the major league lead. Raleigh is now the -130 AL MVP favorite at DraftKings and is -135 at BetMGM. Judge has the second shortest odds at +100 of +105, respectively. It's still a two-player race, with the third-shortest odds belonging to Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal at +4000 at both books. BetMGM reported that Raleigh is now the book's biggest liability in the AL MVP market, having been backed by the most total money wagered at 28.6 percent. Kansas City shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. leads with the most total bets placed at 19.6 percent but is currently a +8000 longshot. The gap between Raleigh and Judge could continue to widen depending on how long the Yankees star is sidelined. Judge experienced discomfort, wincing on a throw during New York's three-game series in Toronto last week. He was in more discomfort Friday and the Yankees sent him for tests that revealed only the strain and no damage to the ulnar collateral ligament. "All in all, we got good news," manager Aaron Boone said. "I think all of us feared the worst." Los Angeles Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani remains the prohibitive NL favorite at -2000 at both books. --Field Level Media

Sophie Cunningham goes viral after accidentally performing very racy act mid-game

Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham has gone viral after accidentally sitting on a cameraman's face during their win on Sunday night. In their game against the Chicago Sky - which the Fever won 93-78 despite Caitlin Clark 's absence - Cunningham was sent tumbling after a foul by Rebecca Allen. The 28-year-old was unable to regain her balance and eventually fell on top of one of the cameramen sat courtside - and accidentally sat on his face as she landed. The Fever star was so focused on watching her shot attempt that she did not initially realize that she'd fallen on top of him and stayed perched for a brief moment. When she did realize, Cunningham quickly sprang to her feet and was visibly stunned at the cameraman, who offered little reaction to the Fever star landing on his face. The moment was caught on broadcast cameras and spotted by those in attendance, before going viral on social media later in the night. Though she made a splash on social media with the unfortunate incident, the same could not be said about her impact on the court on the night. Cunningham recorded just five points and one rebound in 31 minutes against the Sky. Thankfully, her teammates were able to help out and ensure the win for the Fever. The incident comes just days after Cunningham slammed the WNBA after revealing she was fined $500 for criticizing referees. The guard, who has been christened Caitlin Clark 's 'enforcer' this season, recently released a TikTok in which she called out 'some refs' in the league. Clark is among the other stars to have clashed with officials but Cunningham has now been punished over her comments. In the viral video, she wrote '@ some refs' while mouthing a line from Sabrina Carpenter's hit, 'Manchild.' The lyrics she lip-synced were: 'Stupid. Or is it slow? Maybe, it's useless' On Wednesday, Cunningham took to social media once more to reveal her punishment and mock the WNBA. 'I got fined $500 for this TikTok,' Cunningham wrote on X alongside several laughing emojis.

Titans WR Treylon Burks (collarbone) waived/injured

July 28 - Wide receiver Treylon Burks was waived/injured by the Tennessee Titans Monday, two days after sustaining a fractured collarbone. Burks was reportedly expected to miss the start of the season due to the injury, which occurred Saturday in practice while Burks was making a diving catch along the sideline from rookie quarterback Cam Ward. Burks immediately grabbed his shoulder and went straight to the locker room after speaking to trainers. The waived/injured status triggers a 24-hour period when Burks can be claimed off waivers by another team. If he is not, he will return to the Titans on the injured reserve list and he will have five days to either reach an agreement with the Titans or become a free agent. Injuries are nothing new for Burks, who missed a total of 12 games over his first two seasons before sitting out the final 12 games of the 2024 campaign with a torn ACL. Burks has 53 catches for 699 yards and a touchdown in 27 career games (17 starts) since being selected by Tennessee with the 18th overall pick of the 2022 NFL Draft. The Titans acquired that pick from Philadelphia when they traded wideout A.J. Brown to the Eagles. --Field Level Media
