Youth teams representing Texans, Jags capture NFL flag football titles
The Texas Fury Texans shut out the Bad Rabbits Cowboys 19-0 in the girls final after falling in the semifinals of the inaugural tournament.
Game MVP Emery Beckett was 8-for-8 passing for 102 yards and three touchdowns. She connected with Zahara Hill for a 12-yard score, Kelsey Quinn for another first-half TD and Hill again on a 3-yard toss in the game's final five minutes.
Kaitlyn Reynolds and Sonya Chalil recorded interceptions for the Fury defense.
The Bad Rabbits, representing the Dallas Cowboys, defeated AA Select (Philadelphia Eagles) 7-0 in one semifinal, while the Texas Fury edged Conquer (Los Angeles Chargers) 7-6.
On the boys' side, the Jaguars Elite and tournament MVP Brysen Wright posted a 13-0 victory over Showtime, which represented the Atlanta Falcons.
Jaguars quarterback Dalton Motes was 8 of 12 for 108 yards and two touchdowns -- a 30-yarder to Jaiden Barnett and a 15-yarder to Ry'land Williams.
Wright broke up a pass late in the game when Showtime went for it on fourth down. Wright, 14, scored 10 TDs in seven tournament games, including a tumbling one-handed catch in traffic that went viral and caught the attention of NFL stars Patrick Mahomes and Bijan Robinson, among others.
Showtime was 1 of 6 on third-down conversions despite recording more passing yards (117-104). Showtime QB Januel Morales was 8 of 13 for 73 yards and one interception, while teammate Vincenzo Mena was 4 of 10 for 51 yards.
The Jaguars Elite eliminated RFP (Buffalo Bills) 41-12 in one semifinal, while Showtime topped High Intensity (San Francisco 49ers) 13-7 in the other.
The three-day competition involved about 300 teams representing all 32 NFL clubs across 12 divisions. The event also featured international contests with eight teams traveling from Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, Great Britain, Mexico and Puerto Rico.
Flag football continues to surge in popularity ahead of the 2028 Summer Olympics, where it will debut as an official sport in Los Angeles. The NFL announced in May that its players will be allowed to compete.

Pacquiao returned from a four-year absence to push WBC welterweight champion Mario Barrios all the way to a majority draw in Las Vegas. The Filipino legend is 46 and proved fighters can make successful comebacks after a lengthy hiatus. Of course, there is a big difference between being away from boxing for four years and the 18 years it has been since Ali last laced up her gloves. Ali would have a lot of ring-rust to shake off and must decide whether she really wants to risk her unbeaten record against Shields after being retired for so long. Will Shields vs Ali happen? Shields likes to put on a show, but she is running out of legitimate opponents. Calling out an all-time great with a legendary father is certainly a smart business move on her part. SafeSport Center opens search for new CEO
The U.S. Center for SafeSport posted the opening for a new chief executive officer on Thursday, hoping to find a leader to steer the agency into a new era after several troubled years as a start-up. The center, a non-profit that opened in 2017 and is charged with handling sex-abuse cases in Olympic sports, hired consulting firm Korn Ferry to lead the search and work with a search committee made of center board members and advisors. 'This is more than a job search. It is a reflection of our values and the people we are accountable to — our staff, athletes, and the broader sport community," said Board Vice Chair and search committee lead Chicka Elloy. April Holmes stepped away from her duties as board chair to serve as interim CEO in place of Ju'Riese Colon while the search takes place. The center parted ways with Colon in April, not long after Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, began querying the center when details emerged about its hiring of an investigator who would later be charged with rape. The center, which also opened a search for a new chief financial officer, said Korn Ferry 'is currently conducting organizational assessments and confidential outreach to identify candidates who exemplify both executive acumen and a people-first philosophy.' The job description said the center was looking for someone with a 'deep understanding of the sports ecosystem and/or experience working in fields related to abuse prevention, compliance, or athlete advocacy.' Packers flip script, give former OC Nathaniel Hackett shot on defense
July 24 - Former New York Jets offensive coordinator and Denver Broncos head coach Nathaniel Hackett returned to his roots with the Green Bay Packers, but there's a new script in place. Hackett, offensive coordinator of the Packers from 2019-21 before he was hired as the head coach in Denver, signed on to return to Matt LaFleur's coaching staff as a defensive analyst. Hackett worked with the Jets in 2024 but was demoted a month into the season by interim coach Jeff Ulbrich when New York dipped to 27th in total offense (286.6 yards per game) and 25th in scoring (18.6 points). Todd Downing took over as the playcaller at that time. The Broncos fired Hackett after 15 games and a 4-11 record in 2022. Hackett has never officially worked on the defensive side of the ball in the NFL. He was an assistant at Stanford, working with the team's offensive and defensive coordinators, in 2003-04. Green Bay's coaching staff also lists former Chicago Bears and Las Vegas Raiders offensive coordinator Luke Getsy as a senior assistant for the Packers. --Field Level Media
