Imam, 4 others held fortrading illegal firearm
"Akbar Ali, David Soni, Suraj alias Rudra Yadav, Arvind, and Eklavya Sharma alias Mahi were arrested for trading firearms during a routine patrol.
Ali is an imam of Kumhawar mosque," said senior superintendent of police (SSP) Brijesh Kumar.
Further interrogation revealed that Ali had paid Rs 61,000 on Aug 2 for a licenced firearm, but instead of a pistol he received a country-made firearm. Akbar told the police that he needed the weapon for protection due to village hostilities and legal issues with his in-laws.
He further stated that he had filed a complaint regarding the issue on Aug 2 at Civil Lines police station alleging that Suraj Yadav and his associates took Rs 61,000 and his mobile phone under the guise of securing a pistol licence.
A police investigation was initiated that revealed the entire situation, shifting the case from fraud to arms trafficking.
The four arrested individuals have several cases against them. David Soni has a criminal record, with 14 serious charges, including attempted murder, robbery, gangster activities, and Arms Act violations. The other accused were also involved in many criminal activities. tnn

Kochi school receives notice from education department for punishment on latecomers
Kochi: A fresh controversy erupted after a Class V student at Cochin Public School, Thrikkakara, was allegedly forced to run multiple rounds on the school ground and was confined to a dark room for arriving late. Following complaints from parents and student organizations, general education minister V Sivankutty stated that the school had no right to take such action and sought a report from deputy directorate of education (DDE), Ernakulam, on the incident. The child's parent Rasheed Pareed told TOI that his son received the punishment for being late to school by two minutes on Thursday morning. The parent alleged he was asked to run a few times on the ground and was also asked to sit in a dark room until the parent arrived. "When I complained to school officials, they said it is the norm at the school and asked us to transfer the child from the school to another school if needed," said Pareed. The parent said such punishments routinely happen at the school and the incident affected the child's morale to continue going to the school. "He says he is not interested anymore in going to the school," said Pareed. "No teacher or management has the right to treat a child in such a manner. If a child arrives late, they can be advised not to repeat it, but locking them in a dark room in a way that affects their mental state is unacceptable," he said. Announcing an investigation, Sivankutty added that govt was taking strong measures in such matters, which led to a decline in such incidents. He suggested that lack of proper teacher training might be a contributing factor and said govt would consider training teachers in all streams. Soon after the minister's response, DDE officials inspected the school and issued notices warning that NOC would be revoked if such practices are repeated at the school. The officials said they will also send a detailed report of investigation to director general of education on Thursday. Repeated attempts by TOI to contact the school went unanswered. Police U-Turn: DCP Orders Traffic Cops To Film Violations, Month After CP Says No
1 2 Nagpur: In a move contradicting earlier directives, deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Lohit Matani on Thursday ordered traffic personnel to film rash and negligent drivers on city roads and use the footage to register FIRs under Section 279 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The instruction is aimed at curbing speeding, wrong-side driving, triple-seat riding, and driving by minors. Barely a month ago, CP Ravinder Singal, during the launch of Operation U-Turn on July 10, barred traffic cops from using mobile phones to capture violations. State ADGP (Traffic) Kulwant Kumar Sarangal had also earlier directed police across Maharashtra to refrain from using personal devices for such purposes. Matani has directed every traffic cop to register at least 10 such cases daily, aiming for 100 actions citywide, to instill discipline on the roads. "Video evidence is critical. For minors driving vehicles, FIRs will be filed under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, which carries penalties of up to 25,000 and three years' imprisonment. Parents or guardians in whose name the vehicle is registered will also face charges. Matani also stressed strict action against drivers using the wrong side, speeding, and triple-seat riding. "These are different forms of rash driving. We must enforce the law consistently to bring discipline," he said. Emphasising that technology like CCTVs and e-challans can assist only "in 10% traffic regulation", Matani said the "90% contribution" comes from officers' presence at designated points. He warned that surprise checks would be conducted, and absence from assigned duty spots would invite action. The DCP further ordered an immediate response to congestion points and continuous patrolling by traffic inspectors. "If you delay by even 15 minutes, the situation worsens. Be there immediately to clear jams," he said. The aggressive enforcement comes amid concerns over rising accidents in both daytime and evening hours. 'Save Gujarat University' protest amid corruption allegations, students seek audit
Members of the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), former syndicate members, and former students, are staging protests amid allegations of large-scale corruption at Gujarat University. The protesters, carrying posters and beating drums, accused the administration of irregularities in projects like the Rifle Club, Tennis Court, Convention Center, and Food Court.
