Kochi school receives notice from education department for punishment on latecomers
Following complaints from parents and student organizations, general education minister V Sivankutty stated that the school had no right to take such action and sought a report from deputy directorate of education (DDE), Ernakulam, on the incident.
The child's parent Rasheed Pareed told TOI that his son received the punishment for being late to school by two minutes on Thursday morning. The parent alleged he was asked to run a few times on the ground and was also asked to sit in a dark room until the parent arrived.
"When I complained to school officials, they said it is the norm at the school and asked us to transfer the child from the school to another school if needed," said Pareed.
The parent said such punishments routinely happen at the school and the incident affected the child's morale to continue going to the school. "He says he is not interested anymore in going to the school," said Pareed. A police complaint was also filed by the child's family at Thrikkakara police station against the school authority.

In a Facebook post, Sivankutty emphasized that no form of discrimination against children would be tolerated in any school under any circumstances. "No teacher or management has the right to treat a child in such a manner. If a child arrives late, they can be advised not to repeat it, but locking them in a dark room in a way that affects their mental state is unacceptable," he said.
Announcing an investigation, Sivankutty added that govt was taking strong measures in such matters, which led to a decline in such incidents.
He suggested that lack of proper teacher training might be a contributing factor and said govt would consider training teachers in all streams.
Soon after the minister's response, DDE officials inspected the school and issued notices warning that NOC would be revoked if such practices are repeated at the school. The officials said they will also send a detailed report of investigation to director general of education on Thursday.
Repeated attempts by TOI to contact the school went unanswered.

Actor Darshan, associates lodged in quarantine cell of Central Prison in Bengaluru
Bengaluru: Actor Darshan and six others arrested in connection with the murder of Chitradurga's Renukaswamy were allotted undertrial prisoner (UTP) numbers at the Central Prison, Parappana Agrahara, Friday. Having been brought to the prison Thursday night, the group did not participate in the Independence Day celebrations and was kept in the quarantine cell. Prison officials said they were being treated like other inmates, with no leniency as alleged in their previous stint in the same murder case. According to sources, Darshan has been given UTP number 7314, Pavithra Gowda is UTP 7313, Nagaraju R is UTP 7315, Lakshman M is UTP 7316, and Pradosh S Rao is UTP 7317. Two other accused — Jagadeesh alias Jagga and Anu Kumar, residents of Chitradurga — were arrested late Thursday, produced before a magistrate Friday morning, and remanded in judicial custody before being lodged in the same prison. They will be able to meet him from Monday. Darshan is likely to be housed in the same barrack he occupied earlier to avoid interactions with other inmates that could cause law and order issues or lead to preferential treatment. On Friday, all accused were served meals as per the prison menu. Breakfast included upma and laddu prepared for the Independence Day celebrations, though it is unclear if Darshan ate it. Lunch and dinner were also served as per the standard menu. Prison sources said Prajwal Revanna, convicted in a rape case, also did not attend the Independence Day flag-hoisting ceremony. 8 held in illegal surrogacy racket, 6 fertility clinics under lens
Hyderabad: In a major crackdown on a citywide illegal surrogacy and egg donation racket, Petbasheerabad police on Friday arrested eight persons, including a mother-son duo accused of recruiting and exploiting poor women. Investigators said the role of at least six fertility centres in Hyderabad is now under scrutiny. According to police, Narreddula Laxmi Reddy and her son Narender Reddy acted as agents, allegedly luring financially vulnerable women from Bidar in Karnataka and various districts of Andhra Pradesh to become surrogate mothers or egg donors in violation of the law. "Laxmi Reddy had earlier worked as an egg donor and surrogate mother. Using her experience and contacts with other agents, fertility clinics, and IVF centres, she began recruiting women and referring them to different fertility centres," said Medchal DCP N Koti Reddy. Investigators allege Laxmi charged couples — referred to her by IVF clinics — between ₹10 lakh and ₹20 lakh depending on the service sought, while the women who carried the pregnancies received no more than ₹2 lakh. Police say she kept the women at her Quthbullapur residence and demanded additional payments from IVF centres for 'providing' them as surrogates. While the donors and surrogates were aware that commercial surrogacy is banned under Indian law, they agreed to participate for monetary gain, officers said. The possible complicity of the six fertility clinics in Banjara Hills, Kondapur, Madhapur, and Somajiguda is still under investigation, police said. The police said the investigation will determine whether the clinics knowingly facilitated illegal surrogacy or merely acted as intermediaries.
