Limpopo police dismantle vehicle smuggling ring, recover R1. 4 million in stolen cars
Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said that a joint operation between the SAPS Anti-Smuggling Team, Tshimollo Security and Investigation, and Reflex Anti-Hijacking Security successfully intercepted a Toyota Hilux GD6 double cab on the R101 near the Polokwane weighbridge.
Mashaba explained that during the interception, three suspects fled the scene — one managed to evade police, while two were apprehended.
'During the stop, one male suspect fled into nearby bushes, while two female suspects attempted to escape but were apprehended after a foot chase. The female suspects, aged 19 and 20, were arrested and are facing charges of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.'
He further stated that initial investigations confirmed the vehicle was stolen on May 16 in the Garsfontein policing area of Pretoria, Gauteng province.
The Star also reported that on Monday, police intercepted a Toyota Corolla Cross at Mokopane CBD on the R101, reported stolen on May 16 in the Wierdabrug policing area. The driver, a 34-year-old undocumented foreign national, was arrested following a high-speed chase.
Mashaba stated that both vehicles, valued at approximately R1.4 million, were destined to be smuggled across the Beitbridge Port of Entry into Zimbabwe on Sunday, 18 May 2025.
The Toyota Hilux suspects and the Corolla Cross driver are due in Polokwane and Mokopane magistrates' courts, respectively, on May 20.
'Both suspects arrested with the Toyota Hilux will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 20 May 2025, while the suspect arrested with the Toyota Corolla Cross will appear before the Mokopane Magistrate Court on the same day.'
Meanwhile, Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the teams for their relentless efforts in recovering the stolen vehicles.

The vehicle was spotted on the N1 near Botlokwa, where members swiftly intercepted it. Two South African men, aged 31 and 44, were arrested for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle,' Mashaba said. He added that quick coordination prevented the vehicle from being smuggled across the border. 'The vehicle has been impounded for further investigation and the suspects will appear before the Sekgosese Magistrate's Court on Monday (August 18).' The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the teamwork, saying it showed the value of strong partnerships between SAPS and the private security sector in tackling cross-border vehicle crime.

Haenertsburg police probe woman's roadside death
TZANEEN – Police have opened a case of culpable homicide after a woman was found dead along the R71 in Maribethema village in the early hours of Tuesday morning (August 12). Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba says that at around 04:00, officers responded to a report of an accident on the R71. On arrival, they discovered a female victim lying on the road with injuries. Paramedics were called to the scene but declared her dead on arrival. 'Preliminary investigations suggest that shortly before the incident, the woman was seen with a male companion after leaving a friend's home in the village, where they had dropped off a child. The pair were reportedly heading back to their residence across the R71 when community members heard screams.' When residents went to investigate, they found two injured individuals on the road. By the time police arrived, only the female victim remained at the scene, and it is suspected she was struck by a speeding vehicle. 'Police are now seeking the man who was last seen with the deceased, identified as Makhaya Justine Malatjie, as he may be able to assist with the investigation. Anyone with information on Malatjie's whereabouts, or details about the incident, is urged to contact investigating officer Sergeant Pfano Musandiwa on 068 157 3784 or 082 414 3031, call Crime Stop on 08600 10111, visit the nearest police station, or use the MySAPS app.' Investigations are ongoing.

Compensation Fund: When will payment delays end?
The Compensation Fund implemented a new banking system in an effort to fight fraud and corruption. The department of employment and labour is experiencing delays in the processing of Compensation Fund payments. The department apologised that beneficiaries, employers and service providers could expect delays in services. Years of adverse findings by the Auditor General of South Africa (AG) have necessitated a restructuring of systems and a period of stabilisation at the Compensation Fund. 'Temporary delays' A new banking system was recently implemented at the Compensation Fund in an effort to institute reforms recommended by the AG. 'While this initiative is essential for improving the efficiency, security and accuracy of our financial systems in the long term, we are experiencing temporary delays in payment processing as the systems are being integrated and stabilised,' a notice signed by acting fund commissioner Farzana Fakir said. 'Our teams are working closely with the relevant technical and banking partners to resolve these delays as quickly and efficiently as possible.' The department said delays were being experienced in the allocation of contributions paid into the new bank account, causing an inability to generate letters of good standing. 'Stakeholders may experience extending extended processing times for beneifit disbursements, medical services payments and refunders,' the notice said. Compensation fund problems Among other services, the fund pays pensions to the dependants of workers killed or maimed while working – a sum of at least R1.4 billion annually. Fakir appeared before a parliamentary portfolio committee in March where she answered questions about what the AG described as 'a total breakdown in internal controls'. The acting commissioner has been tasked with rooting out fraud and implementing sound financial practices at the fund. The scale of the project was immense, with the fund only this past financial year able to present a set of financial statements after years of failing to do so.
