Limpopo police dismantle vehicle smuggling ring, recover R1. 4 million in stolen cars
Limpopo police have dismantled a vehicle smuggling ring, arresting three suspects and recovering two vehicles valued at about R1.4 million.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said that a joint operation between the SAPS Anti-Smuggling Team, Tshimollo Security and Investigation, and Reflex Anti-Hijacking Security successfully intercepted a Toyota Hilux GD6 double cab on the R101 near the Polokwane weighbridge.
Mashaba explained that during the interception, three suspects fled the scene — one managed to evade police, while two were apprehended.
'During the stop, one male suspect fled into nearby bushes, while two female suspects attempted to escape but were apprehended after a foot chase. The female suspects, aged 19 and 20, were arrested and are facing charges of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.'
He further stated that initial investigations confirmed the vehicle was stolen on May 16 in the Garsfontein policing area of Pretoria, Gauteng province.
The Star also reported that on Monday, police intercepted a Toyota Corolla Cross at Mokopane CBD on the R101, reported stolen on May 16 in the Wierdabrug policing area. The driver, a 34-year-old undocumented foreign national, was arrested following a high-speed chase.
Mashaba stated that both vehicles, valued at approximately R1.4 million, were destined to be smuggled across the Beitbridge Port of Entry into Zimbabwe on Sunday, 18 May 2025.
The Toyota Hilux suspects and the Corolla Cross driver are due in Polokwane and Mokopane magistrates' courts, respectively, on May 20.
'Both suspects arrested with the Toyota Hilux will appear before the Polokwane Magistrate Court on Tuesday, 20 May 2025, while the suspect arrested with the Toyota Corolla Cross will appear before the Mokopane Magistrate Court on the same day.'
Meanwhile, Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the teams for their relentless efforts in recovering the stolen vehicles.

Suspect carjacker denied bail
A 25-year-old suspect was denied bail by the Pretoria Magistrate's Court for a case of possession of a stolen vehicle. The arrest took place on May 30, around 18:00, by the Pretoria Central SAPS's Crime Prevention Team in partnership with Tracker. Spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise said the team received a lookout call via radio control. They followed the lead and shortly afterwards, and managed to corner the stolen vehicle on Eeufees Street, near the N14. 'All the relevant stakeholders were called to the scene. The suspect was later taken in for detention and charged with possession of a stolen vehicle while the vehicle was booked in at the exhibit store VIS unit. The station commander Brigadier Gibin Hlengani Mashaba welcomed the arrest and applauded all the role players for their efforts to put the suspect behind bars. He stated that the case has been allocated to the branch detectives, and they will ensure that the case receives a good conviction. Motorists are urged to be vigilant and very cautious of their surroundings, and also to take safety precautions while travelling at any time of the day. Police advised residents to avoid offering lifts, as this is also one of the leading factors causing hijackings. The suspect was remanded into custody and will reappear at the Pretoria Magistrate's Court at a later date, pending further investigation. Luxury cars and high-end properties worth R20.3 million have been frozen by the Special Tribunal amid the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) investigation into irregular Transnet property valuation contracts. The SIU and Transnet announced on Friday that they have obtained a preservation order from the Special Tribunal to freeze around R20.3 million worth of movable and immovable properties. This action is part of an ongoing investigation into three allegedly irregular contracts with Transnet SOC Limited for property valuation services. The order prohibits Humphrey Tshepo Moyo, Neo Shown Matlala, MM Real Estate (Pty) Ltd, and any other parties from renting, selling, giving away, or making any changes to the frozen properties until the legal case is concluded. These include luxury vehicles and high-value properties. SIU spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago said the action is part of an investigation into three allegedly irregular contracts for property valuation services with Transnet SOC Limited. He said the interim order follows an SIU investigation that uncovered significant alleged irregularities in the awarding of contracts. The order interdicts MM Real Estate, Humphrey Tshepo Moyo, Neo Shown Matlala and any other party from selling, disposing, leasing, transferring, encumbering (including by granting rights of retention), transferring, donating or dealing in any manner whatsoever to the frozen properties pending the finalisation of civil proceedings.
