Partners in crime: How Russia, Ukraine syndicates are running drug trafficking rackets from Bali - with crypto and encrypted chats
Indonesia's National Narcotics Agency (BNN) has identified Bali as a key location for drug trafficking operations, involving Russian and Ukrainian nationals. According to Indonesia's state-run Antara news agency, these syndicates are using advanced technologies like blockchain to avoid detection by law enforcement.
BNN chief, police commissioner general Marthinus Hukom, said his agency has found that traffickers are relying on distributed ledger systems to manage their operations discreetly. "This is a very unique phenomenon, where nationals of Russia and Ukraine — two countries currently at war — have become partners in the crime (of) drug trafficking in Bali," Hukom said during a public lecture at Udayana University in Bali, as quoted by Antara.
Hukom noted that traffickers are using social media platforms, particularly Instagram, to connect with buyers.
Communication is carried out using coded language and encryption to prevent tracing.
The syndicates are also conducting transactions through cryptocurrencies rather than traditional payment methods, making enforcement efforts more complex. "It is very difficult to crack down on such practices because the perpetrators do not make transactions in a conventional manner," Hukom was quoted as saying by news agency Ankara.
Indonesian authorities are coordinating with Russian officials to address the issue.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has previously said that Indonesia is a major target for international drug syndicates, partly due to its large youth population, even though the country has strict drug laws.

FIR filed against Aurad BJP MLA's son in rape case
Bidar: A case was registered at the women's police station in Bidar city on Sunday against Prateek Chavvan, the son of BJP MLA Prabhu Chavvan from Aurad, for allegedly deceiving and raping a woman under the pretence of marriage. Subsequently, he invited her to Bengaluru with marriage promises, where he allegedly raped her repeatedly at a hotel under duress. Prateek's family visited her residence and agreed to the marriage, the complainant said. An engagement ceremony took place in December 2023, with the wedding planned for May 2024. However, Prateek delayed the wedding, citing Lok Sabha elections and the monsoon. Prateek took her to Latur and Shirdi in Maharashtra, where he continued to threaten and sexually assault her, the complaint alleged. When her family approached Prateek's household to discuss the marriage, MLA Prabhu refused the alliance, she said. The case was registered under IPC sections 376(2)(N), 366, 324 and 506. At a media interaction on Monday, the woman appeared with her face covered and refuted Prabhu's allegations about her involvement with another boy. She said neither she nor her family had any political backing, and no one was orchestrating their actions. Moscow: Russia is open to discussing the possibility of holding talks between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, should the latter attend the upcoming commemorative events in Beijing this September, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Monday, according to RT. The Chinese capital is set to host a military parade on September 3 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Putin has already accepted an invitation to attend the event, as per RT. Amid speculation about a potential high-level meeting involving Putin, Trump, and Chinese President Xi Jinping, RT cited a report from Japan's Kyodo News suggesting that China has extended an invitation to Trump. The Times also reported that Beijing may be positioning itself to host a trilateral summit, though Chinese officials have not confirmed any such plans. "If it so happens that [Trump] is there, then, of course, we cannot rule out that the question of the expediency of holding a meeting will be raised," Peskov told reporters, as quoted by RT. He added that the Kremlin has not yet received confirmation regarding Trump's attendance in Beijing. On Sunday, Peskov noted that while a future meeting between Putin and Trump is expected, "it would require a lot of preparation, and the time has not yet come," RT reported. The renewed speculation comes after a phone call between Trump and Xi Jinping in June. During the call, Trump reportedly said he had received an invitation to visit China, though no specific date was provided, RT said.
