Union Government to start accepting Haj applications for 2026 from next week
Terming the management of Haj 2025 as historic, Mr. Rijiju said that 'it was one of the most successful ever'. Highlighting that the fatality rate has gone down to 64 this year from 220 in 2024, the Minister also gave credit of Haj's success to the External Affairs Ministry, Civil Aviation Ministry and the Health Ministry.
Speaking to the press after participating in the Haj review meeting, held at Ambedkar International Centre in Delhi on Friday (July 04, 2025), Mr. Rijiju added that the government was planning to build on this success to ensure an even more seamless experience in 2026. He requested all the applicants to fill up the form and apply within the allocated time frame. He also directed the Haj Committee of India to deposit the payment to the Saudi Arabian government before the deadline.
Officials from the Ministry informed that a companion was mandatory to look after pilgrims above 65 years of age who wish to take the Haj. They added that the government was considering the request for separate accommodations for men and women.

Nimisha Priya forum seeks action against evangelist Paul
The Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council, a body that coordinates the efforts for the release of Nimisha Priya from a Yemen jail, has appealed to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to take action against evangelist K.A. Paul for allegedly collecting money for the release of the Keralite nurse. The council has accused Mr. Paul of soliciting donations through a bank account purportedly started by the External Affairs Ministry, claiming that ₹8.3 crore was needed to free Nimisha Priya. The External Affairs Ministry has clarified that it is not conducting any official fundraising for Nimisha Priya's release and warned against spreading false information in the government's name. In a memorandum to the Chief Minister and the State Police Chief, Subhash Chandran K.R., legal adviser to the action council, expressed concern that more than 54,000 subscribers had already viewed Mr. Paul's alleged X post seeking funds for Nimisha Priya's release. Meanwhile, All India Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar clarified that he had done everything possible to secure a reprieve from execution for Nimisha Priya. 'The ball is now in the Central government's court,' he said, adding that the government should take the initiative to secure her release from prison and that his organisation would provide all possible help. Initially set to be executed on July 16, Nimisha Priya's sentence was postponed by Yemeni authorities on July 14, and subsequently commuted. The action council has asked the Union government to utilise Mr. Aboobacker Musliyar's connections with Yemeni scholars to initiate talks with Talal Abdo Mahdi's family, whose murder Nimisha Priya has been convicted of. Mr. Paul is one of the persons who claimed credit for securing reprieve for Nimisha Priya from execution. Mr. Paul has refuted allegations of fraud through a series of posts on X. He also challenged the government's claim that the bank account in question was not government designated. Mr. Paul also demanded that the funds required for Nimisha Priya's release be paid from the Prime Minister's account.

MLA alleges bid to phase out Calicut airport as Haj embarkation point
T.V. Ibrahim, Kondotty MLA, has raised an allegation of conspiracy to deter passengers from using Calicut International Airport, Karipur. He has claimed that a significant drop in the number of Haj pilgrims opting for Karipur airport due to substantial fare disparities is evidence of the alleged plot. Despite an additional fare of ₹32,000 per ticket, 10,515 pilgrims travelled through the airport for Haj in 2024. However, the number dropped to 5,857 in 2025 with fares being around ₹40,000, higher than those in Kochi and Kannur. For the upcoming Haj season, the number of pilgrims opting for the Calicut airport has drastically dropped to just 632. 'This is part of a bigger plot. The current trend suggests that the authorities are deliberately phasing out the Calicut airport as a Haj embarkation point. It seems their plan will be successful by next year,' said Mr. Ibrahim. According to Mr. Ibrahim, the Central and State governments and the State Haj Committee are guilty of negligence, which led to the ongoing discrimination against the airport. Malappuram district has the largest number of pilgrims going to Makkah from Kerala. 'They chose the Calicut airport despite the high fares in the past two years. The coming season, they are renouncing the airport because of the the exorbitant rates,' he said. The MLA said that the State government and the State Haj Committee did not make effective interventions to put an end to the disparity in charges. 'They are trying to destroy the airport and helping Kannur and Kochi airports grow,' he said. Mr. Ibrahim dismissed the claim that higher prices were charged at the Calicut airport due to the use of smaller flights. 'The argument is baseless. Currently, the standard flight rates to Saudi Arabia from Kozhikode, Kochi, and Kannur are nearly identical. So, why should Haj flights alone have different rates?' he asked. 'Moreover, private Haj and Umrah groups are utilising the Calicut airport more than others. What is the reason behind this discriminatory treatment?' he asked.

Opposition stalls felicitation of astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla over electoral roll row
A felicitation event for astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla after his successful return from the International Space Station (ISS) turned into a deadlock in Parliament for the second consecutive day on Tuesday, after the Opposition repeatedly disrupted proceedings over alleged electoral irregularities and a demand to revoke the special intensive revision (SIR) of Bihar's electoral rolls. Prime Minister Narendra Modi with astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla in New Delhi on Monday. (PMO) On Tuesday, Union parliamentary affairs minister Kiren Rijiju renewed his appeal to Opposition parties to let the discussion proceed. 'I again appeal to opposition parties to allow Parliament to felicitate Capt Subhanshu Shukla and entire Indian Scientists for India's remarkable and successful space mission. All our heroes deserve appreciation,' Rijiju wrote on X. The Opposition, however, accused the government of using national achievements to deflect from pressing debates. Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sushmita Dev retorted by saying, 'Dodge, dodge, dodge behind the armed forces, behind scientists, behind astronauts, behind Tiranga, behind ECI. We don't need the BJP to validate our armed forces, our scientists or our achievers or our flag. Sorry Kiren Rijiju ji, these stunts are not good to avoid debates that will leave the government embarrassed.' The three-hour debate, which began on Monday, opened with Union minister of state for science and technology Jitendra Singh hailing Shukla's mission as a milestone for India's space programme and its grassroots applications. Taking aim at the Opposition for stalling the discussion, Singh said, 'You seem to be miffed by land, sky and now by space. Today, what the Opposition is doing is their expression of anger towards themselves for their failure in every plan.' On the second day, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey carried the discussion forward, directly targeting the Congress. He accused the party of holding the House 'hostage' and of having 'dismantled' India's space sector in the past. Dubey revisited the 1994 espionage case against ISRO scientist Nambi Narayanan, alleging the Congress had acted 'at the behest of China, Pakistan and American businessman George Soros'. Narayanan was later exonerated of all charges. He also pointed to the 2005 Antrix-Devas deal, flagged by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), under which ISRO's commercial arm Antrix agreed to lease two S-band spectrum satellites to private firm Devas Multimedia. The deal, annulled in 2011 over fraud and security concerns, became another centerpiece of his attack. 'The entire Congress had dismantled satellites, space missions and scientists during its tenure,' Dubey said, before being interrupted as Opposition protests escalated once again. Amid the impasse, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor diverged from his party's line, urging participation in the debate. 'Since the Opposition are not participating in the special discussion, let me say how proud all Indians are of the recent mission of Commander Shubhanshu Shukla to the International Space Station (ISS). It served as a stepping stone to our nation's own human spaceflight program, Gaganyaan,' he wrote on X.
