Robert Irwin shares ‘super special' tribute to late dad Steve Irwin

Miami Herald7 hours ago

Robert Irwin is 'just a boy. On a flight with his dad' — and fans can't handle it.
The 21-year-old wildlife conservationist is going viral after sharing a video on Instagram of him browsing through a list of 'popular movies' to watch while on a Qatar Airways flight.
It didn't take long for him to stumble upon 'The Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course.'
The film, released in 2002, stars none other than Steve Irwin, a.k.a the Crocodile Hunter, alongside his wife, Terri Irwin, as they attempt to save a crocodile from (what they believe to be) poachers.
The couple went on to welcome their son, Robert Irwin, the year after the film was released.
Steve Irwin tragically died in 2006 after getting stung by a stingray while filming in the Great Barrier Reef. He was 44 at the time. Robert Irwin was 2.
Now nearly two decades later, Steve Irwin is accompanying his son (spiritually) on a Qatar Airways flight.
'When the in-flight movie selection is elite,' Robert Irwin wrote in the caption of his June 22 post.
'Super special,' his mother, Terri Irwin, wrote in the comment section.
'The best,' his sister, Bindi Irwin, who was born in 1998, added in the comments.
One fan commented, 'Home is whenever I'm with you,' in reference to the song 'Home' by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros playing in the background of Robert Irwin's post.
'This is precious! Following in your daddy's footsteps! He would be so proud of you!' another fan wrote.
'Bro just consistently has me crying,' a third fan commented.
'Just a boy. On a flight with his dad,' another wrote.
After Robert Irwin stumbled upon the movie, he turned the camera back on himself and smiled before clicking play and giving a thumbs up.
Robert Irwin has talked openly in the past about what his father's legacy means to him.
In an exclusive interview with People, published April 4, Robert Irwin described his dad as his hero.
'My inspiration through everything I do. He's really the guiding light in my life. And when I'm at home and working on wildlife conservation projects, I feel close to him and to his legacy,' he told People.
'My dad is and always will be my hero. He's my absolute hero,' he added.
Robert Irwin went on to claim that there will 'never be another Steve Irwin,' but he hopes to carry on his father's legacy and pave the way for a new generation.
'He is and always will be an entity on its own, and no one will ever match that,' Robert Irwin added of his father.
'But if I can carry forward a little bit of that positivity, that passion, that enthusiasm to a new generation, then my job's done,' he concluded.
In a May interview with Us Weekly, Robert Irwin credited his mom for 'keeping that legacy going' and thanked her for being the family's 'pillar of strength' despite how hard Steve Irwin's death must be on her.
'We really, really have it all to thank you for that. So, thank you,' Robert Irwin said to his mom.

Virgin Australia surges in market comeback

Virgin Australia climbed sharply as it re-entered the local share market Tuesday, a dramatic comeback from near bankruptcy more than four years ago. A 30-percent chunk of Virgin Australia, one of the few domestic rivals to Qantas, was sold in an initial public offering this month at Aus$2.90 a share to raise Aus$685 million (US$444 million). The price values the entire airline at Aus$2.3 billion. The stock, which listed on the Australian Securities Exchange at noon, climbed 8.6 percent from the offer price in the first five minutes of trade. US private equity giant Bain Capital came to the airline's rescue in late 2020 after the Australian government refused to bail it out as the Covid-19 pandemic brought international travel to a standstill. "Today marks the start of an exciting new chapter for Virgin Australia as a publicly listed company," said airline chairman Peter Warne. "Our listing reflects the remarkable work undertaken over the past five years to transform the airline and position it for long-term success," he said in a statement. After selling a 30-percent stake in Virgin Australia in the initial public offering, Bain now holds about 40 percent of the airline. Qatar Airways bought a 25 percent share in the carrier this year. Qatar's entry injected a dose of foreign competition against Australia's dominant carrier Qantas and its budget offshoot Jetstar, which together carry more than 60 percent of domestic passengers. "We are proud of how far we have come and energised by the opportunities ahead as we continue to realise our ambition of being Australia's most loved airline," Virgin Australia chief executive Dave Emerson said. djw/pst Error in retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data Error in retrieving data

Duchess Meghan is making her business a family affair. The British American royal and entrepreneur, 43, shared a behind-the-scenes teaser for her As Ever lifestyle brand, which launched in April to fan acclaim, in an Instagram post June 23. The clip featured an adorable appearance from the Duchess of Sussex's daughter, 4-year-old Princess Lilibet. The brief montage showed close-up shots of various fruits (some of As Ever's products have included raspberry and apricot spreads), as well as a shot of Meghan writing down a motivational quote: "Note to self: Let's do something extraordinary today!" Then, in one outdoor scene, Lilibet can be seen standing beside the duchess on a footbridge as the mother-daughter duo appears to marvel at something below. "A little behind the scenes of @aseverofficial," Meghan captioned the post. "The sweetest bond to watch unfold 💕 Daddy's little girl and favorite adventurer," Meghan wrote at the time. In a separate post, she gushed: "Happy birthday to our beautiful girl! Four years ago today she came into our lives — and each day is brighter and better because of it." 10 bingeable memoirs to check out: Celebrities tell all about aging, marriage and Beyoncé Meghan first teased As Ever in March 2024 when she made a buzzy return to Instagram after a yearslong social media hiatus to introduce fans to the lifestyle project, formerly named American Riviera Orchard. The duchess later revealed she renamed the brand As Ever because the previous title, a reference to her and Harry's Montecito residence, "limited me to things that were just manufactured and grown in this area." The first As Ever drop sold out in under an hour and one product — the limited-edition wildflower honey with honeycomb for $28 — had fans buzzing, selling out in less than five minutes. The featured products in the company's first collection included $12 herbal tea in three flavors: hibiscus, peppermint and lemon ginger. As Ever is produced alongside Netflix, which also distributes Meghan's lifestyle show "With Love, Meghan." The series premiered in March and was quickly renewed for a second season.
