Miami Dolphins need more very large people and Kenneth Grant fits the bill

MIAMI GARDENS — Nick Saban likes to say, "Big people beat up little people."
The Miami Dolphins have needed more big people.
When did Dolphins rookie defensive tackle Kenneth Grant realize he was big?
"Kindergarten," Grant said, after the Dolphins made him the NFL's 13th overall pick.

This is an oversimplification, of course. You can't just be big and you can't just add a bunch of big people and expect to win a Super Bowl. Or, at least, a first playoff game this century.
Grant is 6-foot-4, 331 pounds, though he's said he played at 345 for Michigan last season.
Grant is an "off the bus guy."
He's the guy you want the other team to see getting off the bus before a game.
The Dolphins have been perceived as too soft, with an emphasis on speed and creativity over sheer force and will and power. The hope for general manager Chris Grier is Grant delivers on all that promise of power.
Big people beat up little people.
Miami Dolphins combat soft label by adding giant Kenneth Grant

It would have been great if the Dolphins were able to move down five or seven or nine spots and pick up an extra Day 2 pick and still land Grant.

But moving down, finding love and winning the AFC East is hard to do.
"We were actively trying to do it," Grier said of working the phones to move.
Some draft pundits have given the pick a D or an F, but that is meaningless.
The Dolphins badly wanted to add a toughness gene to their makeup for 2025, and Grant fits the bill.
Grant has studied Buccaneers big man Vita Vea.
"Just a wrecking ball," Grant said. "He causes havoc in the backfield."
The addition of Grant should help free up Zach Sieler to make plays.
Coach Mike McDaniel said Sieler texted him "happy things," after the selection.
Was Grant really, as reported, nearly 300 pounds in middle school?

"I guess around there,' Grant said, adding, "To be honest, I don't think I was 300 in middle school. That sounds a little off."
A lounge chair off the deck of a ship, as they say? Either way, the Dolphins have added a very, very big anchor in the middle of the defensive front.
Could Grant have a Tim Bowens-type impact? One can hope.
The Dolphins entered the NFL Draft with 15 linebackers and four defensive linemen and so you knew the defensive trenches would be addressed in Rounds 1, 2 or 3.
Was Grant a little bit of a reach at 13? Maybe. Probably.
A small reach for a needed big man.
Doesn't matter what the pundits say anyway.

All that matters is that Grant plays as well as Grier and McDaniel and defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver need him to – in less than five months.
NFL Draft pick Kenneth Grant fills immediate Dolphins need
Grant may not be fully formed and it will be interesting to see what percentage of snaps he ends up playing, especially what percentage on third downs.
But Grant is a unique athlete. He can move very well for a very big man.
And that is something Miami desperately needs.
The Dolphins also need a butt-kicker, to be juvenile for a moment.
Robert Hunt was a butt-kicker on the offensive line trenches and Miami is still seeking his replacement.
Michigan defensive lineman Kenneth Grant (78) celebrates after Ohio State misses a field goal during the second half at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2024.
To an extent, Grant replaces Christian Wilkins, a year too late, though Grant is bigger and not as explosive. But, still, Grant should replace Wilkins' toughness and grit and impact. They hope.

Should. There are no guarantees.
We know Grant is big. We know he adds toughness.
Miami Dolphins' Kenneth Grant should help Zach Sieler
"Pocket push," McDaniel said.
The Dolphins entered Day 2 with massive, gaping needs at cornerback and guard, and we'll see if Grier successfully triages the problems.
But the Dolphins have added a very, very big person on Day 1 of the NFL Draft.
And the Dolphins believe he's the right guy to help beat some people up on Sundays.

The Packers release Jaire Alexander, does he make sense for the Vikings?

The Packers release Jaire Alexander, does he make sense for the Vikings? The Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers have a unique relationship. Their proximity allows for one of the biggest rivalries in the entire NFL, so much so that it goes up and down the social ladder in this country. Whether you are in a classroom with your friends who may have different rooting interests, all the way up to presidential elections, worrying about upsetting swing states with their fandom, the fever runs deep between these teams. Ironically, despite the tenacity of the rivalry, there tends to be a crossover between the teams and their rosters from time to time. Most notably, Brett Favre went from being a Packers legend to nearly leading the Vikings to a Super Bowl if not for an ill-fated interception late in the 2010 NFC Championship. Now that he is available, there may be another notable Packers player whom the Vikings could pursue. On Monday, the Packers released their former All-Pro cornerback Jaire Alexander. He wraps up his seven-year career with the Vikings divisional rival. Alexander is known for his coverage ability of Justin Jefferson and his honors, which include All-Pros and Pro Bowl selections, as we mentioned. The Vikings showed last year they have no issue taking some teams' broken toys and turning them into their own pieces to get more juice out of them. They did it last season with Stephon Gilmore and had mild success, the key for Alexander to make a difference though is he must get back to being healthy. He hasn't played more than seven games in the last two seasons, but the last full season he played in 2022 ended with him making an All-Pro team.

Lesser-mentioned Ravens star lands on CBS Sports list of 2025 breakout stars

Lesser-mentioned Ravens star lands on CBS Sports list of 2025 breakout stars Ravens running back Keaton Mitchell earns national spotlight in new NFL prediction from CBS Sports It's too early to make predictions. It's only June, but even though the mind says 'don't get excited', the heart, more often than not, refuses to listen. This Baltimore Ravens team looks good on paper, and even though games aren't played on looseleaf, every glance at the roster produces adrenaline. This team sent 11 of its players to the Pro Bowl last season. All of them are back. DeAndre Hopkins was added during free agency. Malaki Starks and Mike Green were drafted. The new faces have an opportunity to add more punch to an already formidable roster. Then again, so do some of the guys who have already been here. May we present Keaton Mitchell for your consideration? CBS Sports names Keaton Mitchell as a player to watch Mention the Ravens and why they are a Super Bowl contender, and several names may come up before a backup running back. Keaton Mitchell was added to Baltimore's roster as an undrafted rookie free agent. Pro Football Focus named him as one of the NFL's best UDFA prospects during that offseason. CBS Sports recently named him as an under-the-radar player to watch in their dig on one player from each team who could make a surprising impact. Tyler Sullivan wrote this one up and did a great job. Here's some of his reasoning for mentioning Mitchell as the Ravens representative. "For a six-week stretch during the 2023 season, Mitchell was a lightning rod. The back averaged 8.4 yards per rush and 10.5 yards per reception. However, that run ended when he suffered a torn ACL that also put a dent in his 2024 campaign. Now, Mitchell is back healthy and noted recently that he feels 'like I'm back better than when I first got to Baltimore'. Of course, Derrick Henry will carry the bulk of the work out of the Ravens' backfield, but Mitchell could prove to be a change-of-pace option with home run ability for what is already one of the best rushing attacks in the NFL." Henry and Mitchell could provide some 'thunder and lightning'. The latter is no stranger to adversity or this Ravens offense. An undrafted rookie free agent selected after the 2023 NFL Draft, Pro Football Focus named him as one of the best UDFAs taken that offseason, but two days after making the 53-man roster, he found his way to the injured reserve. He returned in Week 6 and appeared in eight games with two starts before seeing his season end with a torn ACL. He began last season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list but was activated for Week 10. For his career, he has notched 426 yards and two TDs on 62 carries. Keep an eye on him as the Ravens begin another run, and expect some big moments because even though the opportunities will be limited, he'll be able to deliver a few.

Now, it has been reported that the Buffalo Bills were the team that was interested in acquiring him. While the two teams discussed a trade, they could not come together on an agreement. Both sides chose to move on. Now, the Packers have opted to outright release Alexander on Monday. He will become a free agent and will be free to choose his next team as a free agent. Jaire Alexander #23 of the Green Bay Packers reacts to an interception during the first quarter against the Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Wild Card Playoff game at AT&T Stadium on January 14, 2024 in Arlington, Texas. More Photo byNFL insider Jordan Schultz was the first to report that the Bills were the team who discussed a trade for Alexander earlier this offseason. He provided more details on the news. Read more: Packers Make Final Decision on Jaire Alexander: Report "Sources: The Packers and Bills held trade talks this offseason centered around CB Jaire Alexander, but talks ultimately fell through and Buffalo moved on," he wrote on X. "It's unclear if the Bills will revisit things now that Alexander has been released — especially since they spent a first-round pick on Maxwell Hairston — but they were a team that had shown real interest." Alexander has only been able to play in seven games each of the last two years. He has seen his career completely derailed by injuries. Last season in just seven games, Alexander showed why he's still so valued. He recorded 16 total tackles to go along with a fumble recovery, two interceptions, a defensive touchdown, and seven defended passes. Those numbers show what he's still capable of providing when healthy. For a team like Buffalo, who is a top-tier Super Bowl contender, adding Alexander could be the final piece of the puzzle. In fact, the Bills do have a need at the cornerback position. Read more: Lions Trade Idea Would Land Shedeur Sanders From Browns At 28 years old, Buffalo would be wise to take a chance on Alexander. Even though they did draft Maxwell Hairston, the former Green Bay star would be a welcome addition and would help make a push towards a championship if he can stay healthy. Plenty of other teams around the NFL could show interest in Alexander as well. He's one of the most talented cornerbacks in the league. Any team that needs secondary help would make sense as a suitor. Expect to hear more news about Alexander in the near future. The Bills are a team worth keeping a very close eye on.
