'Quarterback' review: What did we learn about Jared Goff in the series' 2nd season?
Netflix released the second season of its "Quarterback" series on Tuesday, featuring an inside look at the 2024 season through the eyes of Jared Goff, Joe Burrow, and Kirk Cousins.
One of the clips released before the new season aired featured the Detroit Lions quarterback reminiscing on his calls with head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes when he was first traded to the team in 2021. The rest of the season follows the ups and downs Goff experienced as he led the team to a 15-2 season and a disappointing playoff loss.
SPOILER ALERT: The following observations contain spoilers from Season 2 of "Quarterback."
Goff says Rams blindsided him
Goff didn't hold back when talking about his conversations on the side of the Los Angeles Rams who threw him into their trade deal with the Lions for Matthew Stafford.
"Three weeks after the last game of the season, get a call from Sean [McVay] and really did not expect anything," Goff said. "He lets me know they're trading me to Detroit and I'm like, 'Whoa, okay, alright. What the hell? What's happening?' I would say about 30 seconds after that phone call, it was on Twitter."
The Rams traded Goff with two first-round picks and a third-round pick in exchange for Stafford. The Rams went on to win the Super Bowl the following season.
"You wish that it wasn't such a blindside and that there was some sort of maturity, I guess, to have that conversation and to be able to let me know what was going on and how things went down. And why this is happening. It was my first real taste of true adversity and your career is kind of at a fork in the road."
He admitted the playoff win against the Rams in 2023 had something a little extra since it was his former team.

In an alternate universe somewhere, Lions' wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is wearing No. 16.
In Episode 2, St. Brown's girlfriend, Brooklyn Adams, admitted to Christen Goff that when it came time for St. Brown to pick a number, she was supposed to count the number of receivers who were drafted ahead of him in 2021.
"I messed up, and it's not 14," Adams said. "I was off by two."
The Netflix crew talked to St. Brown about it, and he said he should've chosen No. 16, but that Goff looks better in it.
Christen helps Jared memorize play calls
Goff's play-call tutor at home is his wife, Christen. He said the couple will sit on the couch to relax and watch TV, but Christen will sit there with a play sheet and read the plays off for him to repeat and practice.
During Episode 3, Christen reads off a few wordy, outrageous-sounding plays for him to repeat, including the one that the following week saw running back David Montgomery throw a touchdown against the Titans.
Inside the Stumblebum
When the story of the 2024 season reached the Lions' late-December matchup with the Bears in Chicago, Netflix caught all of the build-up and reaction to the infamous "stumblebum" play that saw Goff and Jahmyr Gibbs purposely tumble in the backfield before Goff uncorked a pass to Sam LaPorta for a touchdown.
The Netflix crew took viewers to the week of practice before the game, showing the offense practicing the trick play to iron out the kinks. Goff at one point said he almost actually fell to the ground.
"Don't tell me that," then-offensive coordinator Ben Johnson said.
During practice, they fine-tuned the play to include Gibbs taking a dive and having the offensive line call out "fumble" to throw off the defender meant to be watching LaPorta.
"That boy needs an acting job, huh?" wide receiver Jameson Williams said after the play worked to perfection during the game.

Matt LaFleur and Packers coaching staff rated top 10 group but fall in rankings from 2024
The Green Bay Packers' coaching staff has been rated as one of the ten best groups in the NFL ahead of the 2025 season by ESPN's Ben Solak, but curiously, their ranking has fallen since 2024. A year ago at this time, Green Bay's coaching staff, consisting of head coach and offensive play caller Matt LaFleur, offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich and defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, who was entering his first season as an NFL DC, were ranked eighth in the league. LaFleur was credited for launching Jordan Love's career as a starting quarterback, as well as taking the youngest team in the NFL to the playoffs, with the Packers then becoming the youngest group to win a postseason game since 1970. Despite some caution over Hafley as a first-time DC coming over from the college game, Solak expressed belief the former Boston College head coach could improve Green Bay's defense. For Stenavich's part, a former offensive line coach turned OC, Solak was impressed by the Packers' ability to always field a competent unit even in the face of injuries. Then in 2025, the Packers improved their record from 9-8 the previous year to 11-6 despite playing in arguably the most challenging division in football, Love missing 2.5 games early in the year and playing hurt for plenty of others. Green Bay's ability to find a way to put up points on offense and win games with Malik Willis in the lineup, who was acquired in a trade less than two weeks before the season opener, was remarkable. The defense also improved significantly in Hafley's maiden season as an NFL coordinator, and the Packers return the same core three coaches entering the 2025 campaign. Yet their overall standing among NFL coaching staffs has fallen to tenth in this year's version of the rankings. The Packers did not go as far in 2024 as they did the previous year, beaten by the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card round, but looking at the entire season, it is hard to argue they were not a better team on both sides of the ball than in 2023. In Solak's rankings, he admitted LaFleur had 'one of his better seasons' as a coach in 2024, applauding the job he did in designing a workable offense with Willis at the helm to keep the Packers afloat until Jordan Love returned. He was also impressed with Jeff Hafley's creativity and ability to have success in his first season calling plays for an NFL defense. So what was the problem? Why the regression in Green Bay's overall ranking? Solak cited the Packers' reliance on turnovers defensively, which can be volatile year to year, and their ranking in defensive success rate against dropbacks (dead last) as evidence the success the unit had a year ago perhaps not being sustainable going forward. Green Bay had 17 interceptions and 14 forced fumbles a year ago. Whether that should take away from the coaching job Hafley did and how he is regarded, rather than being a point of pride is debatable. Hafley and the defensive coaches have placed an extreme emphasis on forcing more fumbles this season, with the players responding by regularly punching the ball out in training camp practices so far. The Packers' poor record in division (1-5, with the lone win coming in last gasp fashion over the Bears) or more specifically, the combined six losses they had against three playoff teams in the Lions, Vikings and Eagles, was also given as a reason for knocking the coaching staff. Solak said Love was 'flummoxed' when facing quality coordinators, while Hafley's defense was 'exposed'. It is true the Packers often did not look ready to play in the biggest games, starting slow too regularly and digging themselves a hole they could not get out of. Love's injuries cloud almost everything that happened on the offensive side specifically though, with the quarterback admitting this offseason the various ailments impacted him pretty much all year. Hafley's defense was mostly responsible for keeping the Packers in some of those games while the offense tried to find its feet. It is worth remembering that tenth is still a good overall ranking, but perhaps the most surprising aspect of the article was the team ranked one spot above Green Bay: The Las Vegas Raiders. The Raiders were ranked 32nd, dead last, in this exercise a year earlier, and this offseason hired 73-year-old Pete Carroll to be their new head coach as well as Chip Kelly to call plays on offense. Carroll's bona fides are well known, but he has not won 10 games or more as a head coach since the 2020 season and has no playoff wins since the 2019 campaign. Kelly is an intriguing hire which may prove to be inspired, but his last two years working in the NFL with the 2015 Eagles and 2016 49ers did not go well. Las Vegas retained defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, who has a good reputation around the league, but the Raiders defense has ranked no higher than 14th in expected points added in his three years leading the unit. Hafley's Packers were 5th in that statistic in 2024. The other eight teams ranked above the Packers in order of worst to best are the Eagles, Bills, Broncos, Rams, Ravens, 49ers, Chiefs and the Vikings at number one overall. That puts Green Bay's coaching staff eighth among the 14 playoff teams from last year. The Packers will not be losing sleep over their arbitrary ranking, which is still strong, but the decision to drop them two spots, especially given some of the teams placed above them, is certainly an interesting one.

For the past several years, our monthly column, the Nerd's Watch, has been the place to find out all the best genre titles coming to the biggest streaming services. It wasn't a complete list. We just posted the titles we think you'd care about, but it was still long, and frankly, it was hard to pick out the best of the best. Months before the new remake with Jack Black and Paul Rudd, revisit the iconic camp classic with Ice Cube and Jennifer Lopez. It wasn't meant to be a camp classic, but it is now. Groundhog Day is one of those movies that just gets better and better the more you watch it. It's so expertly put together, so funny, so heartfelt. Just a true modern classic. We're onto our third Jurassic Park trilogy, but the original—Jurassic Park, The Lost World, and the underrated Jurassic Park III—are all reemerging on Netflix this month. Just in time for its 40th anniversary, the John Hughes comedy about two nerds who create a woman in a computer is popping up on two streamers. It's incredibly dated but also, thanks to John Hughes, still pretty delightful. Call them the Paul Walker years. The first seven Fast and Furious movies are all coming to Netflix (as well as Hobbs and Shaw), and you can make an argument that it was the passing of Walker, during Furious 7, that derailed the whole thing. Hopefully things get back up to speed in the future, but at least we'll always have these movies (and Hobbs and Shaw, unfortunately). The star-studded adaptation of the iconic Douglas Adams novel is nowhere near as good as the source material, but is anything? That the movie shared even a sliver of the genius and fun of the novel makes this one worth watching. Remember when Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Chloë Grace Moretz co-starred in one of the best superhero movies ever, alongside Nicolas Cage, and directed by Matthew Vaughn? Well, if not, now is the time to watch it again. J.J. Abrams writes and directs this Amblin-inspired tale of a group of kids who film a train crash, only to realize it's at the center of mysterious happenings around town. I've been meaning to revisit this one. One of the weirdest movies you'll see this year is this Stephen King adaptation, produced by James Wan and directed by Osgood Perkins. It's about a family tied in with a toy monkey that kills people seemingly at random. It's super violent and super funny. I'm writing this one more for myself than anyone else. Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard co-directed this camp-based slasher movie that looks like a lot of fun. I missed it in theaters but definitely will check it out on streaming. Please refer to the above video. From Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, the directors of Captain Marvel, comes this 'freaky' retro anthology starring Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Dominique Thorne, and other actors who aren't in Marvel movies. You may have missed it, but earlier this year, A24 released this very unique and gorgeous film about a seemingly regular rural town that's thrown into peril because of a group of nearby creatures. Creatures that one of the young women in the town becomes friends with. Willem Dafoe is among the stars. It'll be about a year until we next see James Gunn's DC Universe on the big screen, but before then, it'll be very active on HBO Max. First up, season two of the irreverent Peacemaker starring John Cena. It ties directly into the events of Superman and pushes the whole narrative forward. Have you ever wanted to know more about Wakanda in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Well, this new animated series is just the ticket. I feel like I'm in Edge of Tomorrow with how I always repeat myself, but here it goes again. Every time Edge of Tomorrow, the Tom Cruise-Emily Blunt time loop sci-fi action film, appears on a streamer, I will let you know. If you stream it, we will watch. It's not quite Edge of Tomorrow, but if you want another super solid Tom Cruise sci-fi film, this one from Joseph Kosinski, the director of Tron: Legacy, Top Gun: Maverick, and F1, well, here you go. After a season with equal parts character and carnage, the video game adaptation starring Anthony Mackie is back. And, this season, it's all about the car battle royale that made the series so popular. One of the more underrated films of 2024 was this incredibly visceral action film starring and directed by Dev Patel. Highly recommended. Spike Jonze directs, Charlie Kaufman writes, and Nicolas Cage stars alongside Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper, and others. Not many movies could live up to that incredible roster, but this one does. There have been seven Paranormal Activity movies, and the first six (1, 2, 3, 4, Ghost Dimension, and Marked Ones) are all coming to Paramount+. Some are better than others, but it's a really strong, scary, found-footage franchise. Jim Carrey stars as a man who lives a pretty great life until he figures out he's the star of the world's largest reality TV series. A modern classic that gets better and better with age. One of those 1990s slashers that came out in the wake of Scream and has its fans, as well as its haters. We're in the first camp, what about you? Weeks after becoming probably the first indie horror movie to get its own corn maze at San Diego Comic-Con, the horror movie with the perfect, direct title is coming to streaming. Want more io9 news?
