30 key Miami Hurricanes for 2025 season: James Brockermeyer UM's latest transfer center
With the calendar officially flipped to August, the Miami Herald is counting down 30 of the most important players on the Hurricanes' roster, one per day leading up to the season opener, to provide a closer look at the team heading into coach Mario Cristobal's fourth season.
Today: The No. 19 player on our list, James Brockermeyer.
Position: Center
Hometown: Fort Worth, Texas
Year: Redshirt senior
How he got to Miami: 2025 transfer (TCU)
Key stats: 28 games played, including 12 starts in 2024 at TCU
In summary: For a third consecutive season, the Hurricanes will rely on a transfer center in the middle of their veteran offensive line. First it was Matt Lee in 2023. Then it was Zach Carpenter in 2024. Now, it will be James Brockermeyer, who transferred to UM from TCU after initially starting his career at Alabama. The redshirt senior entered spring practices already having the playbook essentially memorized and gelled with the rest of his offensive linemen almost immediately. Now, his focus for the fall is building on-field chemistry with quarterback Carson Beck, who was limited in spring practices while recovering from offseason UCL surgery.
'We continue to install new thing and create some more wrinkles, so at end of the day, you've got to come ready to learn, ready to work. Every time you install something new, you got to be able to know it better than anyone else as a center, because you got to send guys in the right direction and you got to be on the same page with the quarterback and the offensive coordinator.' - James Brockermeyer on the adjustments being made in fall camp
'When we get a new center, like somebody who ain't been around the group, we just try to treat them like family, just make them feel comfortable. But James is good. He's got a good personality. He talks a lot, he listens. That's a big thing that he came in and he doesn't try to overdo his part. He listens to all the guys that have been here. He just takes in coaching.' - Anez Cooper on James Brockermeyer
No. 20: Wide receiver Keelan Marion
No. 21: Defensive back Jakobe Thomas
No. 22: Left guard Matt McCoy
No. 23: Defensive back Keionte Scott
No. 24: Running back Jordan Lyle
No. 25: Defensive back Damari Brown
No. 26: Defensive lineman Armondo Blount
No. 27: Wide receiver Malachi Toney
No. 28: Defensive back Ethan O'Connor
No. 29: Linebacker Kamal Bonner
No. 30: Running back CharMar Brown

Is Notre Dame football closing in on its quarterback decision? One pundit thinks so
The start of the season is getting closer, as Notre Dame is just over two weeks away from going on the road for a season-opening top-10 US LBM Coaches Poll matchup against the Miami Hurricanes. There are multiple starting spots that have yet to be announced, but the biggest one that we are all watching is who will be the starting quarterback: CJ Carr or Kenny Minchey. The is one insider that believes the choice could be made soon: On3's Tyler Horka. On Friday morning he posted a clip of both of them taking reps and said this weekend 'might be the one of the biggest of the year for Notre Dame' as they could be close to named its starting quarterback. All the current rumors have been that head coach Marcus Freeman, offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock and quarterbacks coach Gino Guidugli are leaning towards Minchey, but obviously no decision has been made. The Irish could wait another week to let it play out, or they could end the drama and announce the starter and get ready to prep for Miami. If they are pretty much even at this point, it makes more sense to continue the battle and give them time for the guy to emerge. It's going to be a tough choice, but one that will have to eventually be made for Notre Dame. Packers QB Jordan Love picked surgery to ensure being 100 percent for Week 1
Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love could have played through his left thumb injury had it occurred during the regular season, but getting surgery and fixing the issue now was his preferred path forward so he would be at 100 percent to open the season. "With the time frame that we have right now, finishing up training camp and preseason, and heading into the season with the choice to be going into the season 100 percent healthy, that was definitely the call I wanted to make," Love said Thursday. "Dealing with injuries last year, I wanted to go into this thing feeling good." Love had the surgery in Los Angeles on Tuesday. He said he is "on the road to recovery" and expecting to practice in some capacity next week. The Packers play the Detroit Lions in the season opener on Sunday, Sept. 7, so Love will have almost four weeks of recovery between the surgery and kickoff in the opener. The injury happened in the Packers' preseason opener last Saturday night. Love hit his left thumb on the helmet of a Jets defender while taking a sack but "didn't think too much" of the injury when it first happened. Love practiced Monday as part of the "evaluation process" but ultimately determined surgery on the thumb was the best option. "That was part of the debate," Love said. "If this was in the middle of the season, probably would have been something we didn't get the surgery on. But with it being early and having time to recover and be fully ready for Week 1, the recommendation was surgery." Love injured his knee in Week 1 last year, which required him to miss two games, and he later suffered a groin injury after returning. After a season so affected by injury, Love didn't want to start this one with an injury situation he had time to fix. The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is often injured in contact sports when the thumb is forcibly stretched away from the hand. While Love is a right-handed quarterback, having a UCL injury in the thumb can affect a person's ability to grasp objects, such as a football, per Cleveland Clinic. Love said the focus will be on protecting the thumb over the next few weeks so there is no re-injury before Week 1. "We'll be smart with it going forward," Love said.

Dan Quinn singles out these two Commanders' offensive linemen
An offensive line has to work together so much. There is timing, knowledge, and communication that are all needed. Washington Commanders right guard Sam Cosmi has not yet been able to work back with the first-team unit, as he recovers from a torn ACL in the playoff win at Detroit in January. But also, left guard Brandon Coleman has been missing time. The second-year player out of TCU started most of 2024 at left tackle, and this year is being asked to transition inside to left guard. Last season, during training camp, he injured a pectoral muscle that set him back a couple of weeks. Later, during the regular season, Coleman suffered a nagging injury to his knee that slowed him some, but he was able to continue in the starting lineup. Two weeks ago, during a Saturday practice, Coleman limped off the field with an apparent foot injury. He has missed time, yet head coach Dan Quinn has said he does not believe Coleman's injury is severe. Quinn was asked if he was concerned Coleman had missed valuable reps with Laremy Tunsil, the new left tackle on the Commanders' line. "Yes, you always want that to happen (reps together as a unit) 100 percent, no doubt about it," Quinn said. "It was nice to see him participating today in our early morning walk-through. So, to see him getting closer, I'm pleased about that because no one wants anyone to miss. I know it happens, and I try to think about the things I can control and not worry about the things I can't control. We just try to do the best we can in that space." Quinn then offered that Nick Allegretti, filling in for Cosmi at right guard, has a great attitude and is thus a leader on the offensive line and also on the team. Quinn assured the press that Allegretti has always been that way, displaying a willingness to move and play wherever he is needed on the line to help the team.
