Nepali girl student found dead at KIIT University hostel, 2nd case in 3 months

On Thursday evening, a girl student from Nepal who was studying at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Bhubaneswar, was found dead inside her hostel room, police said. The police said upon receiving the information about the alleged suicide, the body of the girl was found from her hostel room, which is inside the campus. She was recovered in a hanging position.
This marks the second case of alleged suicide in 90 months at the university.
"Today, we have received information that a girl from Nepal has died by suicide at the KIIT University...we reached there and investigated the matter. A detailed investigation will be conducted into the matter...The scientific team reached there, and all the details were collected. Her family has been informed. The body has been sent to AIIMS for the post-mortem," said Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner Suresh Dev Datta Singh.
Police further mentioned that the Nepal Embassy has also been informed about the incident.
Odisha government also extended condolences over the death of the girl and assured that necessary action will be taken in the matter.
"Information about the alleged suicide of a girl student from Nepal, studying in the first year B Tech, Computer Science, KIIT University, was received from local police at about 8.10 pm today. The parents of the girl were informed about the incident immediately by the university authorities. In this hour of distress, the State Government extends its support to the family of the deceased and offers its condolences to them," the Information and Public Relations Department said.
"On receipt of the information, senior officers, including the Commissioner of Police and Revenue Divisional Commissioner, rushed to the site to enquire into the circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident and take necessary action in the matter. The forensic team is at the spot to collect evidence," it added.
Earlier this year, a Nepali student from the same university was found dead in the hostel on February 16, leading to Nepalese students staging a protest. The protesting students had alleged that a fellow student had harassed her and that the college had failed to act despite multiple complaints. Later, the accused student was arrested on February 17.

A 30-year-old Nepali national residing in Hyderabad allegedly killed his live-in partner – who was also from Nepal – packed his body into a travel bag, and dumped it in an isolated area, officials said. He was arrested after the incident came to light on June 4 with the discovery of the bag containing the body of the victim – Tara Bohra – near a residential area in the city's Bachupally. The accused was identified as Vijay Toppa alias Wilson, who was employed as a chef at a nearby restaurant. The couple lived in a live-in relationship. The police said that the duo came to know each other on Facebook and then entered a relationship. Tara was already married and had two children. Despite this, she shifted to Hyderabad on April 15 and started sharing a rented accommodation in Bowrampet with Vijay. On May 23, the couple had an argument over her pregnancy, and Vijay allegedly strangled Tara in a fit of rage. Upon her death, he packed her body in a travel bag and left it in an isolated location. A local watchman found the body and informed the police. Senior Cyberabad Police officials, along with forensic teams, reached the spot and launched a detailed investigation. To nab the accused, five special teams were formed. Using CCTV footage and other technical clues, police tracked the suspect, Vijay, to the Medchal district and arrested him. A 30-year-old Nepali national has been arrested in Hyderabad for allegedly murdering his live-in partner, also from Nepal, stuffing her body into a travel bag, and dumping it in a deserted incident came to light on June 4 when the body of 33-year-old Tara Bohra was discovered in a travel bag abandoned near a residential area in Bachupally in swiftly detained the suspect, Vijay Toppa alias Wilson, a chef at a local restaurant, who had been in a live-in relationship with the victim. Investigations revealed that Vijay and Tara had met on Facebook and developed a relationship. Despite being married with two children, Tara moved to Hyderabad on April 15 and began living with Vijay in a rented house in to police, an argument erupted between the couple on May 23, reportedly over Tara's pregnancy. In a fit of rage, Vijay allegedly strangled Tara with a nylon bag thread. He then packed her body into a large travel bag, transported it to a secluded colony, and abandoned it.A local watchman discovered the body and alerted the police. Top officials of Cyberabad Police, including K Suresh Kumar, Satyanarayana, and Ravi Kiran Reddy, along with forensic teams, visited the crime scene and launched an intensive investigation.
