UMediC expands into medical services
The strategic venture into medical services is part of UMediC's vertical expansion into the medical healthcare services.
UMediC is synergistic, leveraging its existing business offerings to enhance its scale and active presence among hospitals and local healthcare providers.
The new segment will offer services such as a care centre providing post-recovery care, ambulance solutions equipped with the latest medical devices onboard, as well as establishing a learning centre offering training workshops to raise public awareness of medical healthcare and provide medical training to medical professionals.
UMediC executive director and CEO Lim Taw Seong said that with the launch of its medical services, the company is transforming its business by delivering a comprehensive spectrum of healthcare solutions aimed at addressing the gaps and pain points among local healthcare providers.
This includes the lack of capacity to cater to all patients, given that there are only a limited number of beds available.
'Rather than sending them home, we are offering them a place for post-surgical care, which also helps release the burden of working-class families who might not be able to tend to their needs.
'Aside from that, the ambulance service is also a key area that we have identified as a strong growth area for us, given that we can cross-sell to hospitals as a complete solutions offering equipped with our latest offerings under our marketing and distribution arm.
'Looking ahead, we see immense opportunities coming from this space. We expect to gradually see more contributions in tandem with the growing ageing population,' he said at the launching event today.
Lim said that at the heart of UMediC's manufacturing strength is its state-of-the-art facility in Batu Kawan Industrial Park.
The recent expansion with the addition of Plant 2 has increased total manufacturing space to over 50,000 square feet.
Combined with the upcoming ISO 5 cleanroom and sophisticated blow-fill-seal equipment, this positions the company at the forefront of global medical device production.
'Our pioneering centre of excellence and halal-certified facilities, along with our footprint in nearly 40 countries, enable us to deliver life-saving products that meet the highest standards of quality and safety,' Lim said.
In line with its growth strategy, UMediC has also expanded its role beyond manufacturing to provide direct services to end users. The UMC Learning Centre now offers professional medical training to ensure that personnel across the industry are equipped with the highest level of skills.
UMediC's ambulance services are fully equipped to deliver rapid and high-quality care while integrating ambulance-specific medical products.
Complementing these is the UMC Healthcare Centre, staffed by professional medical and nursing personnel, including visiting doctors.
'Much like how working parents rely on daycare centres for their children, our healthcare centre offers a safe and professional environment for patients during the day while their families are at work,' Lim explained.

In a statement issued on Friday (Aug 15) night, the government emphasised that Lai has been receiving appropriate treatment during his detention. Such reports attempt to mislead the public into believing that Lai did not receive the medical care he needed as a means to smear his case under the Hong Kong National Security Law (HKNSL), as well as his custodial arrangements and the medical care services provided to him, said the government said. Their aim to smear and undermine Hong Kong's rule of law is despicable and violates the professional conduct of journalists, it added. 'During today's open court hearing, senior counsel representing Lai Chee-ying clearly presented to the court that the correctional institutions arrange daily medical checkups for Lai and that there had been no complaints at all regarding the medical care he receives there,' said a spokesman for the HKSAR government. The court commended the Correctional Services Department (CSD) while the Department of Justice stated that the prosecution is equally concerned about Lai's health and well-being, which led the CSD to arrange for a professional medical team to be on standby on the spot, ready to respond to any emergency immediately if needed, said the spokesman. 'External forces and anti-China media chose to turn a blind eye to these facts, and continued to repeat lies and engage in despicable operations. We must sternly denounce their wrongdoings.' Before attending court, doctors certified that Lai was physically and mentally fit for court hearing, the government said. Following his claims of heart palpitations, a visiting specialist from the Hospital Authority conducted a detailed examination on him on Aug 7 and no abnormality was found. As a precaution, the specialist recommended prescribing medication to Lai to be taken as and when needed, and that he should wear a cardiac monitoring device, but Lai Chee-ying declined the advice of the specialist, according to the spokesman. On Aug 13, the CSD arranged for another detailed examination by a specialist from the Hospital Authority. The specialist again recommended that Lai wear a device to monitor his cardiac condition, which he finally accepted to do, and the Hospital Authority and the CSD immediately made arrangements for that within a short period of time, said the spokesman. The CSD is committed to ensuring that the custodial environment is secure, safe, humane, appropriate and healthy and has also put in place an established mechanism, including regular independent visitors, namely Justices of the Peace, who inspect the prisons to ensure the rights of persons in custody are protected, the spokesman said. 'The medical care received by Lai Chee-ying in custody is adequate and comprehensive. The CSD supports persons in custody with medical services provided by the Department of Health and the Hospital Authority.' MOH: More Than Half Of Malaysian Adults Are Overweight
More than 6.86 million Malaysian adults are overweight, with over half of the country's adult population now classified as overweight or obese, according to the National Health and Morbidity Survey 2023. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the findings highlight the urgent challenge of tackling non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, hypertension and obesity. 'About 32.6% of adults are overweight, while 21.8% or 4.58 million people are obese. Diabetes affects 15.6% or 3.55 million Malaysians and hypertension impacts 29.2% or 6.65 million people,' he said. He also highlighted that the data also showed regional disparities where Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest prevalence of overweight adults at 40.6%, while Perlis topped the obesity chart at 32.8%. Perak reported the highest prevalence of both diabetes (21.7%) and hypertension (40.2%). Dr Dzulkefly said the government is intensifying collaboration to address rising NCD rates, including new initiatives under the upcoming national budget. 'Malaysia has also partnered with UK-based Reset Health, a platform used by the National Health Service, to introduce digital healthcare solutions for managing obesity and diabetes. 'The findings are alarming, but they also remind us that prevention and early intervention must be a shared responsibility between government, healthcare providers and the public,' he added.

Over half of Malaysian adults are overweight
GOMBAK: More than half of Malaysia's adult population, or about 11.4 million people, are overweight or obese, according to the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2023. Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said the survey found that 32.6 per cent of adults aged 18 and above were overweight and 21.8 per cent were obese. Combined, this means 54.4 per cent of the adult population in the country are either overweight or obese. The survey also found that 15.6 per cent of adults, or 3.55 million Malaysians, have diabetes, while 29.2 per cent, or 6.65 million, have hypertension. Perak recorded the highest prevalence of diabetes at 21.7 per cent, followed by Pahang at 21.5 per cent and Perlis at 20.6 per cent. For hypertension, Perak also topped the list with 40.2 per cent, ahead of Sarawak (39.9 per cent) and Perlis (39.1 per cent). Regarding overweight adults, Kuala Lumpur ranked highest at 40.6 per cent, followed by Putrajaya (35.5 per cent) and Labuan (34.8 per cent). Perlis, however, had the highest obesity prevalence at 32.8 per cent. Dzulkefly said the government was stepping up collaborations to address the rise in non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including diabetes, hypertension, and obesity. He also spoke about the Roczen Universal programme, a free digital health intervention designed to help Malaysians manage obesity and type 2 diabetes. He said Malaysia had partnered with Reset Health, a United Kingdom-based platform used by the NHS to manage obesity and diabetes, to introduce end-to-end digital healthcare solutions locally. "This initiative focuses on screening, treatment, and lifestyle interventions, with a strong emphasis on family and community-based health. Healthy parents will raise healthy children, but unhealthy parents are more likely to raise unhealthy children," he said. He added that the ministry had proposed several new initiatives for the upcoming budget to strengthen Malaysia's response to obesity and diabetes.
