Social media users have shown their anger as Wicked actress Cynthia Erivo is cast to play Jesus
The cast, which also features Queen frontman Adam Lambert as Judas and Josh Gad as King Herod, has sent social media into meltdown amid accusations that the cast was woke.
One commenter said, 'Jesus was not a woman', with another agreeing, saying 'Am I the only person that thinks Jesus being played by a woman is just a bridge too far?'
Another fan wrote "This is beyond woke."
The criticism seems to stem that for the first time in the history of the production, Jesus won't be played by a man.
Miss Everio told Billboard that she wasn't going to please everyone.
'Why not? You can't please everyone. It is legitimately a three-day performance at the Hollywood Bowl where I get to sing my face off. So hopefully they will come and realise, 'Oh, it's a musical, the gayest place on Earth," she told Billboard.
Miss Erivo, who lives in London identifies as queer and bisexual is in a relationship with a woman.
She is set to reprise her role as Elphaba in Wicked: For Good, which is due in cinemas in November this year.

John Stamos replaces Josh Gad in Jesus Christ Superstar
John Stamos will replace Josh Gad in Jesus Christ Superstar. The Full House actor has stepped in to play King Herod in the live production at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles over the weekend after the Frozen star pulled out with COVID-19, and he has hailed the role a "dream" but also "a little insane" because he has had so little time to prepare. John wrote on Instagram: "Well… this weekend just got Biblical. I'm stepping in as King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar at the @HollywoodBowl, starring the brilliant @cynthiaerivo . King @Joshgad unexpectedly got hit with COVID (feel better soon, brother!)and while I didn't push him down the stairs, I am grateful for the chance to step into the gold lamé. "This is an honor. A dream. And also a little insane because… I just stepped off a plane from @thebeachboys tour in Spain and have less than 24 hours to pull this off. Wish me luck. And let's rock the Bowl.(sic)" Cynthia Erivo, who plays Jesus, is "really excited" to work with John. She shared his post on her Instagram Story and wrote: "You are missed @JoshGad and thank you @JohnStamos for stepping in on such short notice. I'm really excited to see you.(sic)" Josh had shared his devastation on Wednesday (30.07.25) that he would no longer be performing in the musical extravaganza. He wrote on his own Instagram account: 'It is with enormous heartbreak that I inform you all that unfortunately, I have contracted a virus known as COVID (remember that one little b****** from season one of 'earth really sucks right now?'? "Anyway, out of an abundance of caution and respect for my cast, I will not be performing in Jesus Christ Superstar this weekend (unless I test negative). 'It truly breaks my heart, but I can assure you all that this is going to be one of the greatest things you will ever see. 'I hope at some point you get to see me wear the crown and show you what we've been up to, because it was quite something, but for now, sadly, I will not be able to grace the Hollywood Bowl.(sic)" The Hollywood Bowl reshared Josh's statement and wished the Frozen actor a "speedy recovery".

Josh Gad 'heartbroken' to pull out of Jesus Christ Superstar
Josh Gad has pulled out of appearing in Jesus Christ Superstar after contracting COVID-19. The 44-year-old actor has been left "heartbroken" at having to miss the chance to play King Herod in the musical extravaganza, which will run at the Hollywood Bowl from 1-3 August but promised fans the production - which stars Cynthia Erivo as Jesus and Adam Lambert as Judas - will be one of the "greatest things" they will ever get to see. He shared a statement on Instagram which read: 'It is with enormous heartbreak that I inform you all that unfortunately, I have contracted a virus known as COVID (remember that one little b****** from season one of 'earth really sucks right now?'? "Anyway, out of an abundance of caution and respect for my cast, I will not be performing in Jesus Christ Superstar this weekend (unless I test negative). 'It truly breaks my heart, but I can assure you all that this is going to be one of the greatest things you will ever see. 'I hope at some point you get to see me wear the crown and show you what we've been up to, because it was quite something, but for now, sadly, I will not be able to grace the Hollywood Bowl.(sic)" The Hollywood Bowl reshared Josh's statement and wished the Frozen actor a "speedy recovery", and confirmed they 'will announce a new performer for the role of King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar soon.' Josh recently spoke of how he decided to become an actor after seeing the impact his comedic talents had on his mom when he tried to brighten her mood amid his parents divorce. He told the Bullseye podcast: "I felt like during this period, my job was, 'I'm going to make you laugh.' When I can break through that wall of pain, it's a superpower. "And I felt like I was seeing, in real-time, that I was bringing her out of this dark spiral she was in, even for just brief moments at a time. "I realised one day that if I could do this for my mom, is there a path for me to do this at large? Can I actually give this gift to other people, the gift of laughter and joy? The gift of escapism? "And slowly but surely, that became my path, and part of that was my mom again, giving me a set of tools with which to refine my craft."

Justin Bieber is 'selfish' and 'impatient'
Justin Bieber can be "extremely selfish and impatient". The 31-year-old singer - who has 11-month-old son Jack Blues with wife Hailey Bieber - has thanked his Christian faith for always being there even when he doesn't show the best traits. Sharing a selection of photos of himself by a tree, he wrote on X: "Let's have a good day, let's go outside. Get in nature. "Thanking Jesus for his patience with me this morning. I can be extremely selfish and impatient yet Jesus always has his arms open toward me." The Believe singer has candidly addressed his flaws in a number of social media posts in recent months. Last month, Justin declared himself to be "broken" and admitted he has "anger issues" in a post that seemingly addressed fans concerned over his erratic online activity. He wrote: 'People keep telling me to heal. 'Don't you think if I could have fixed myself I would have already? I know I'm broken. I know I have anger issues. 'I tried to do the work my whole life to be like the people who told me I needed to be fixed like them. And it just keeps making me more tired and more angry. The harder I try to grow, the more focussed on myself I am. 'Jesus is the only person who keeps me wanting to make my life about others. Because honestly I'm exhausted with thinking about myself lately aren't you?' His post came after Justin shared a message exchange with a friend, in which he fumed he would be cutting off for good after they seemingly criticised his actions. In a screenshot of the text exchange, he wrote: 'I would never suppress my emotions for someone. Conflict is a part of relationship. If you don't like my anger, you don't like me. "My anger is a response to pain I have been thru. 'Asking a traumatized person not to be traumatized is simply mean. (sic)". The unnamed pal insisted they could "see and feel" Justin's anger. They replied: 'I'm not used to someone lashing out at me. "It's not that I don't see and feel your anger.' The Love Yourself singer then declared he was ending their friendship and insisted he "didn't need" the other person in his life. He wrote: 'Ouch. This friendship is officially over. I will never accept a man calling my anger lashing out. I enjoyed our short-lived relationship. 'I wasn't kidding when I told u I didn't need u as a friend. I have good friends who will respect these boundaries. I thought u were a p**** which is why I always kept my distance but I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. This confirms u were the p**** I always thought u were.' He then sent a middle finger emoji before his texting partner questioned: "I'm a p****?" Justin replied: 'Blocking u now.'
