Fantasy Football minicamp roundup: Malik Nabers, Hollywood Brown and more

Yahoo5 hours ago

We're deep into the NFL offseason in June and the final round of minicamps got going this week. Among those teams are the Kansas City Chiefs, Baltimore Ravens, Los Angeles Rams, New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks. Last week, the majority of the NFL held their minicamps and we got a flurry of news bits that helped shed some light on potential fantasy football storylines going into 2025. Below, we're going to go over news coming out of this week's minicamps and how that information might impact fantasy football for the upcoming season.
Be sure to follow along here for live updates from minicamps this week.
Hollywood Healthy
The Kansas City Chiefs were able to make it all the way to the Super Bowl last season with a revolving door at wide receiver. That group included rookie Xavier Worthy, Rashee Rice, JuJu Smith-Schuster, Justin Watson and Hollywood Brown. The last name on that list, Brown only played in two regular-season games last season due to a shoulder injury. At the start of minicamp, Brown told reporters he's "100% healthy" going into 2025.

Fantasy impact: Medium
Hollywood is an interesting sleeper going into 2025. Rice is coming off a major knee injury even if he starts the season healthy. Worthy showed big flashes of upside as a rookie, but can he be a true No. 1 option for QB Patrick Mahomes? Travis Kelce is still Travis Kelce but he's seen a slow decline over the past two seasons and could be thinking retirement soon. So, there's a path to Brown being the No. 1 WR option for Mahomes in an elite offense. Yahoo's analysts have Hollywood ranked 59th among WRs going into 2025.
Nabers expected to be ready for training camp
Last week, New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll told reporters he wasn't concerned about WR Malik Nabers' toe injury. Daboll echoed those statements during the Giants' minicamp this week, stating the injury isn't anything that should be "long-term" and Nabers is expected to be ready for training camp in July. It's still a bit sketchy that Nabers isn't on the field right now given how much time he's had to nurse the injury. Plus, this could all be coachspeak from Daboll. But we'll take his word for it right now.

Fantasy impact: Medium
We're putting this at a medium because of what the other side of this news would have meant, if that makes sense. If Daboll had come out and said Nabers would miss parts of training camp, we'd be on red alert. Nabers appears fine but we also want to see him on the field come July. If that's the case, we can put all of this injury-scare stuff to rest. But until then, we're going to continue to keep our eye on the situation.
Giants QBs looking good so far
If Nabers is good to go to start the season, whoever is throwing him the ball will be a major upgrade, it seems. QBs Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston were brought in this offseason and the Giants also drafted QB Jaxson Dart in the first round in 2025. All three have looked good at practice so far.
Wilson will 100% begin the season as the starter. We could see a situation where Dart gets some playing time late in the season if New York isn't in the playoff picture. Either way, the Giants truly haven't had a real QB starting since Eli Manning in 2018.

Fantasy impact: Medium
Again, a lot of the news coming out is a bit knee-jerk-ish and it's early in the summer. But if the Giants can get average QB play, it could be huge for fantasy purposes. We saw what Nabers did with a combination of Daniel Jones, Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito last season — 109 catches for 1,204 yards and seven touchdowns. If the Giants can keep Wilson upright, Nabers' ceiling could be the top wideout in fantasy football.

It also could thrust WR2 Wan'Dale Robinson into fantasy relevancy. Robinson was quietly WR42 last season with 93 catches on 140 targets for 699 yards and three TDs. With decent QB play, Robinson could spend most of the season as a viable FLEX option in most PPR formats. WR Jalin Hyatt, who was injured during practice this week, and TE Theo Johnson, also could become appealing sleeper picks in deeper leagues.
Kyren Williams, Rams progressing in contract talks
Williams is entering the final year of his rookie contract and can become a free agent after 2025. He was able to steal the backfield in 2023, finishing with 1,144 yards and 12 TDs while leading the NFL in rushing yards per game (95.3). He followed that campaign up with career highs across the board — 316 carries for 1,299 yards and 14 TDs in 2024. The two sides are working to get a deal done before the season but it's unclear if that will come to fruition.

Fantasy impact: Low
This is low but one report could change things quickly. Williams isn't going anywhere this season. If the Rams choose not to extend him, he could get a franchise tag next offseason. Either way, Williams could be playing for a contract, which may up his game for 2025. It also could mean the Rams want to see what they have in second-year back Blake Corum, who didn't get much work as a rookie.
Los Angeles also added a RB via the 2025 draft in Jarquez Hunter. Not to say Corum and Hunter are a threat to Williams. Chances are Williams gets extended and continues to be a top-10 fantasy back. We also know how NFL franchises have treated top RBs recently when it comes to contracts. If this thing goes south, it could have a big impact. For now, it doesn't.

Former New York Jets LB C.J. Mosley retires from the NFL

Former New York Jets LB C.J. Mosley retires from the NFL CJ Mosley has called it a career. The five-time Pro Bowler has retired from the NFL. The 33-year-old, who last played in the league with the New York Jets last season, announced he's hangin' them up on Thursday: Mosley has been a free agent since March. The Jets released him in March after he missed much of the 2024 season due to various injuries including a neck problem. Mosley being sidelined did allow Jamien Sherwood to step into the lineup and become the top linebacker on New York's defense. According to ESPN, Mosley was designated as a post-June 1 cut, which means his remaining dead-cap hit will be spread across the next two years. Those totals are $8.8 million this year and $7.7 million in 2026. Mosley joined the Jets via a five-year, $85 million deal in 2019. Mosley earned three-straight Pro Bowls with the Baltimore Ravens before heading to New York. From 2019 to 2024, Mosley only earned one Pro Bowl with the Jets. Jets Wire will continue to provide updates throughout the 2025 offseason.

Commanders Saved From Shame by Three Unforgettable Legends

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Regardless of how things ended in January, Washington Commanders fans have to be thrilled with the events of the past year-plus. Josh Harris has been a revelation as he and Mark Clouse have ushered in an era that will hopefully erase the pain caused by Dan Snyder. Adam Peters is the new GM. Dan Quinn enters year two as head coach hoping to build upon the success seen during his first run. Their quarterback is Jayden Daniels, a Pro Bowler during his first NFL season who earned Offensive Player of the Year honors at season's end. Champ Bailey #24, Washington Commanders news Champ Bailey #24, Washington Commanders news Photo by/Newsweek/Getty Images Make no mistake. Washington isn't patting itself on the back following a deep postseason run. They don't feel as though they overachieved. In fact, it's the opposite. Seeing their season end one game short of the NFL's biggest game left them feeling relatively unsatisfied. So, they added to their roster, signing Deebo Samuel, Deatrich Wise, and Javon Kinlaw among others. They traded for Laremy Tunsil. They drafted Josh Conerly and Troy Amos. Suddenly, the roster is stacked. Did we mention that it didn't always be this way? Must read: PFF's Commanders Evaluation Is Music to Jayden Daniels' Ears Three Commanders save the franchise from total omission from an elite roster of legends When it's all said and done and NFL stars call it a career, they want to know they've made an impact, that they'll be remembered. It's all about legacy, setting their families up for success, and earning the respect of the guys they played with. Washington, for the most of the past quarter century, has endured name changes and relative obscurity as evidenced by their near-omission on an intriguing all-star team of NFL legends. ESPN's Aaron Schatz and Seth Walder recently dropped their NFL All Quarter Century team, a talented grouping of 53 players and coaches. It even has a practice squad. When smoke cleared and dust settled, three familiar faces were on the list. Two never played under the Commanders team name, but you get the idea. We all still have a soft place for all of them. Trent Williams (2010-19) Unfortunately, Trent Williams' career will be remembered for an ugly standoff with the front office, but for ten seasons, he was one of the best O-lineman this franchise has seen in a while. He earned Second-Team All-Pro honors in 2015 and seven of his 11 Pro Bowl nods playing in the burgundy and gold. Champ Bailey (1999-2003) It feels like this can be stated now. If Washington had a time machine, they'd probably go back and rethink the trade that landed Clinton Portis in exchange for Champ Bailey and a second-round pick. Oh well, you live and you learn. Portis earned a Second-Team All Pro nod and Pro Bowl mention during the 2018 NFL season, but during his seven-year run in the DMV, Champ earned three First-Team All-Pro mentions with the Denver Broncos. Bailey also earned two of his four Second-Team All-Pro mentions and eight of his 12 Pro Bowl mentions in the Mile-High City. Not only that, he's a Pro Football Hall of Famer whose career in Denver outlasted Portis's time with Washington by three seasons. Yep! It's safe to state that Denver certainly won this trade. Bobby Wagner (2024-present) Bobby Wagner is the lone Commanders star still active whose name appears on ESPN's quarter century all-star squad. He'll probably be best remembered as a Seattle Seahawks legend, but his time with Washington has been very fruitful. Wagner earned a Pro Bowl nod, his tenth, and his fifth Second-Team All-Pro nod. Better yet, he's been a fantastic influence on the young stars on both sides of the ball. Must read: Former Rival Says Commanders' New Roster Addition Should Concern the NFL Wagner has been a revelation and has been, without question, an important cog in this turnaround. Worth mentioning: Fear not if you have suffered for a while. Washington's future looks better and brighter now. Jayden Daniels is the real deal. Who knows? Years from now, in 2050, maybe he'll find his way onto an all-star team of the next 25 NFL seasons. For more Washington Commanders and NFL news, head over to Newsweek Sports.

Royals top prospect Jac Caglianone connects for his 1st big league homer at Texas

Kansas City Royals' Jac Caglianone celebrates in the dugout after hitting his first career home run during a baseball game against the Texas Rangers, Thursday, June 19, 2025, Arlington, Texas. (AP Photo/Albert Pena) ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jac Caglianone has his first career home run just shy of two weeks after his debut with the Kansas City Royals, and a day after the 22-year-old prospect sat out of a big league game for the first time. Caglianone won a lefty-lefty matchup by pulling a 95.5 mph fastball from Jacob Latz into the Texas Rangers bullpen in right-center field to give the Royals a 3-0 lead in the second inning Thursday. Advertisement Vinnie Pasquantino hit a two-run shot off Texas starter Shawn Armstrong in the first inning of a bullpen game for the Rangers. The sixth overall pick in last year's amateur draft out of Florida, Caglianone went 0 for 5 in his big league debut at St. Louis on June 3. His average was at .196 after going 0 for 4 in the opener of a series at Texas and sitting out the second game. Caglianone, who played his first six games on the road before making his home debut against the New York Yankees, swung at Latz's 2-2 pitch above the strike zone, and pointed toward center field as he rounded second base after his 387-foot drive. The 6-foot-5 Caglianone hit 15 homers in 50 games combined with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha before getting called up. ___ AP MLB:
