Nashik: The
emergency operation centre
at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan, the
Nashik Municipal Corporation
's headquarters, has remained idle for over a year amid delays in its handover from Nashik Municipal Smart City Development Corporation Ltd (NMSCDCL) to the civic body.
Built at Rs 59 crore, the centre aimed to enhance disaster management capabilities, particularly during monsoons and the upcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela. "CCTV cameras and a public address system (PAS) have been integrated with the emergency operation centre to facilitate NMC in tackling situations during any emergencies or disasters," an official said.
Unseasonal rain has been lashing Nashik city for the past fortnight, during which around 250 trees were uprooted and branches of another 200 trees fell.
The city also experienced waterlogging at around 210 locations amid NMC's failure to undertake pre-monsoon works like cleaning the stormwater lines and nullahs.
"At this juncture, the emergency operations centre at Rajiv Gandhi Bhavan could have helped NMC in tackling the situation if it were operational," an official said.
NMSCDCL CEO Sumant More said the emergency operation centre was ready. "We are in the process of handing over the centre to NMC. It will take a couple of weeks to complete the process."

The Maharashtra government as approved Rs 2.7 crore for immediate assistance to people who suffered damages due to unseasonal rains in Palghar district in the last two months, officials said on Sunday. The unseasonal weather events during April 4-6, May 6-7 and 23-25 resulted in widespread damage across the region. "A total of 38 houses were completely destroyed, while 3,852 homes suffered partial damage. Additionally, 10 huts and six cowsheds were damaged due to high winds and heavy rainfall," the district administration said in a release. In view of the extensive damage caused to houses, agriculture, fruit cultivation, fish products and livestock in Palghar during the unseasonal rains, district Guardian Minister Ganesh Naik raised the issue during a recent cabinet meeting and secured a sanction of Rs 2.70 crore for immediate relief efforts, it said. The approved amount was being disbursed to the affected families on a priority basis, the release said. "Many families were left homeless in the aftermath of the unseasonal rains and storms. This assistance will offer essential support for their rehabilitation," Palghar Collector Dr Indu Rani Jakhar said. May rain caused 35cr farm loss in Nashik
Nashik: Over 35,000 farmers across 1,469 villages in Nashik district have reported crop losses covering 12,156 hectares, resulting in a combined estimated loss of Rs35 crore due to unseasonal rain in May. According to a senior officer from the district administration, a report was prepared based National Disaster Response Funds (NDRF) guidelines and the estimated damage was sent to state govt for further action. "A total of 35,757 farmers were affected due to unseasonal rain that wreaked havoc in Nashik district. The worst-hit talukas were Surgana, followed by Peth, Satana, Dindori, and others. The loss of crops that were damaged by 33 % or more was estimated at Rs 35 crore," said the officer. Among horticultural crops, 21,084 farmers from 957 villages suffered losses on 9,494 hectares, with a total loss of Rs25.6 crore. In Satana, 3,719 farmers in 145 villages lost crops over 3,069 hectares (including 3,042 hectares of onions and 27 hectares of other crops), resulting in a loss of Rs8.3 crore. Promises unfulfilled, flooded KSRTC bus station cries for crucial makeover
KOCHI: Another monsoon season is here and it's the same old story at the Ernakulam KSRTC bus station. Located in the heart of the burgeoning city, the dilapidated bus station has remained susceptible to waterlogging for over a decade. While the demolition of the five-decade-old building that houses the station and the construction of a new terminal have hit a roadblock, the repeated promises of the KSRTC authorities to address the issue mostly remain on paper. The last of the assurances was delivered nearly two months back, when the authorities said the work to raise the floor-level of the building and the station premises and the setting up of new drains would be completed before the onset of monsoon. In fact, Ernakulam MLA T J Vinod allotted Rs 50 lakh for the purpose from the legislative assembly constituency asset development fund. The work has kicked off for sure, but is progressing at a tardy pace. 'The activities have been hampered by intermittent rain. The good thing is that the scope of the project has broadened with BPCL (Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd) contributing Rs 99 lakh. A tripartite agreement will soon be signed between BPCL, KSRTC and the PWD to implement the Rs 1.5-crore project,' the MLA told TNIE. Swanky terminal a distant dream The plan to set up a new swanky bus terminal -- modelled after the Vyttila Mobility Hub -- on 2.9 acres in Karikkamury has suffered a setback. The project was initially mooted to be implemented with the Rs 12-crore fund promised by Cochin Smart Mission Ltd (CSML). But the KSRTC backed out following a difference over the terms and conditions that included toll for the entry of KSRTC buses into the proposed terminal. 'Despite giving land, they wanted to levy a toll on our buses. That can't be justified,' a senior KSRTC official said. Earlier, the plan was to construct a bus terminal that can be accessed by both private and KSRTC buses. The project was in the doldrums and the CSML term ended in March. While the agency's term has been extended by another year, a fresh nod from the ministry of housing and urban affairs needs to be obtained to avail funding.
