Gold price prediction today: The ongoing Iran-Israel conflict has brought gold back into focus as a safe haven investment and gold rate has been rising for some days now.
Praveen Singh, Senior Fundamental Research Analyst- Currencies and Commodities at Mirae Asset Sharekhan shares his views on gold price outlook and what levels investors should watch out for:
Gold Performance:
On June 16, spot gold surged to $3,451 in the overnight trade as Iran and Israel stepped up their attacks on each other in the weekend.
Gold prices eased as the day progressed on the notion that the ongoing military conflict would be confined.
The Wall Street Journal reporting that Tehran has signalled its willingness to deescalate the conflict and resume nuclear talks with the US provided the US does not join the Israeli attacks further boosted the downside pressure on the yellow metal. Reuters also reported the willingness of Iran to de-escalate as conveyed through Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Oman.
Spot gold traded between $3383 and $3451 on Monday. At the time of writing this article, the metal was changing hands at $3398, down nearly 1% on the day. The MCX August gold contract was trading at Rs 99,280, down roughly 1% on the day.
Although, reportedly Iran is willing to defuse the conflict, Reuters has cited Iranian State media saying that Iran is preparing for the largest and most intense missile attack in history on Israeli soil.

Israeli's PM Netanyahu, in his direct address to the Iranian people, called for overthrowing the clerical regime. Earlier he said that for three decades, the central threat to Israel's existence has been Iran's nuclear programs.
Casualties have been reported by both nations as Israel dealt the worst military blow to the Islamic Republic since it was invaded by Iraq in 1980.
Spot gold surged 3.68% in the week ending June 13 as the metal rose sharply in the last two trading days of the week on geopolitical concerns emanating from the Middle East due to the Iran-Israel conflict.
Gold ETF:
Total known global gold ETF holdings stood at 88.85 as of June 13 as ETFs recorded net inflows for the third straight week. Holdings are up 7.25% YTD.
Hedge fund managers reduce net bullish gold bets:
As per CFTC data, money managers decreased their bullish gold bets by 657 net-long positions to 129,851 in the week ending June 10 as long-only positions fell 772 lots to 164,315 lots. The short-only total at 34,664 was the lowest in 11 weeks.
Data roundup:
China's data released on Monday morning were mixed as retail sales (May) came in at 6.4% Vs the estimate of 4.90%, while industrial production (May) at 5.8% lagged the estimate of 6%. Meanwhile, property market data continued to reflect weakness, though jobless rate edged lower from 5.1% to 5% Vs the forecast of 5.1%.
US Dollar Index and yields:
At the time of writing, the US Dollar Index, at 98, was hovering near a four-year low.
Ten-year and thirty-year US yields were up by around 0.65% on inflation concerns due to rising oil prices.
Upcoming data and events:
Today's major US data on cards include retail sales advance (May), industrial production (May) and import and export price indices (May).
The Bank of Japan will announce its monetary policy decision on June 17 wherein it is expected to keep the target rate unchanged at 0.5% amid trade uncertainty.
The US Federal Reserve will deliver its monetary policy decision on June 18.Although the FOMC is expected to keep the overnight Fed Fund rate unchanged at 4.25%-4.50%, traders will look forward to clues to possible rate cuts as CPI and PPI data of May have been somewhat comforting.
The Bank of England is set to announce its monetary policy on June 19. Traders expect the Bank to keep the Bank rate unchanged at 4.25%; however, the Bank's hint at possible easing going forward would be the major attraction for traders.
Gold Price Outlook:
In the very short term, gold moves will depend on the Iran-Israel conflict.
US President Trump has confirmed Iran's inclination to talk about de-escalating the ongoing military conflict. However, Israel also needs to reciprocate. Positive ETF inflows and weakness in the US Dollar also support the yellow metal. Overall, if both Israel and Iran agree to sort out their differences through dialogues and Iran agrees to hold a nuclear deal talk, gold will fall further.
In that case, gold can fall to as low as $3228.
However, if the situation remains uncertain and the conflict continues, gold will have a good buying support.
Overall, as the things stand presently, gold is likely to trade with a slight bearish tilt, though there are multiple factors like fiscal concerns, weaker Dollar, central banks' buying gold, geopolitical concerns due to wars and conflicts elsewhere, and investors looking for alternatives to the US assets, etc.,
that are supporting the gold rally.
Considering Israel-Iran conflict de-escalation, traders may take a light sell position in the metal for very short-term trading. It is to be noted that US retail sales data and upcoming FOMC meeting will also be on traders' radar.
Support is at $3375 (Rs 98,600)/$3328 (Rs 97,200). Resistance is at $3450 (Rs 100,800)/$3500 (Rs 102,200)/$3580 (Rs 104,500).
In case of worsening Iran-Israel conflict situation coupled with heightened tariff concerns, gold may rise to $3700 (Rs 108,100).

Pick up defence stocks for long term; 2 shipping stocks to buy: Neeraj Dewan

Neeraj Dewan, Market Expert is optimistic about the long-term prospects of the defence sector. Budget allocations and export potential will drive growth. He suggests that while some consolidation may occur in the short term, stocks like Garden Reach and Mazagon Dock are good long-term investments. Dewan advises caution on SCI and Cochin Shipyard due to potential geopolitical impacts. ADVERTISEMENT Would you recommend betting afresh into BEL, HAL, or any other defence stock? Neeraj Dewan: If someone is a long-term investor, even after the run-up, defence is one space where there are going to be budget allocation expenditure, there can be export opportunities, and so they will continue to be strong even in the longer term. Shorter term, definitely because in the last couple of months the stocks have run up a lot and some consolidation may happen. But for a long-term play even now one can pick up these stocks and stay invested in them for a longer term. Even if you take a look at some subsectors inside defence, let us talk about some of these shipping companies. A lot of them have seen a runup once again in the last couple of trading sessions. Given the kind of surge that we have seen in a couple of these names like SCI, Garden Reach, Cochin Shipyard, would you still be advising a buy in all of these stocks? Neeraj Dewan: I am still positive on companies like Garden Reach or Mazagon Dock. SCI can be a move because of the prices going up because of the Iran-Israel clashes, so they may be impacted. Suppose that is settled and there is a truce there, you may get some reaction on the downside from SCI. So, I am not positive on stocks like SCI or even Cochin Shipyard but something like a Mazagon Dock or Garden Reach are good long-term plays. What is your analysis on Biocon? I do not know how closely you track this one because there has been a lot of easing in terms of regulatory hurdles. Now, there is a sizable fundraising as well. The next big overhang seems to be succession, but until then, everything seems to be working up. Neeraj Dewan: Actually, there has been a lot of news flow around the succession issue also and whether there can be some stake sale or not. So, there were a lot of speculations in the stock earlier. And now there is this QIP. There will be interest in seeing who is going to invest in the QIP and that will keep the stock positive. But in the medium-term, what happens is that once you get this kind of a supply in the market, the big investors will invest into the stock for the long term and there would not be any huge follow-up demand coming in. So, over the medium-term, the stock may not give that kind of a move, but this kind of inflow into the company for a longer term will do well and the stock should do well. Performance on the numbers front has not been that great lately, and that also needs to improve going ahead. If that improves with this kind of a capital coming in, over the long term, the stock should do well. ADVERTISEMENT What is your take on Asian Paints? Reliance has offloaded its entire stake in Asian Paints. Does this change investor perception about the stock now that Reliance has offloaded? Asian Paints has been in the middle of the competition and the price war in paints. Do you believe it is a good time to see any run-up or is it going to be sluggish going ahead? Neeraj Dewan: Some more consolidation will stay as far as Asian Paints is concerned. There can be some short-term up move because the stock has been down and stayed at these levels for quite some time. So, someone who is a long-term investor and has seen Asian Paints doing well over the years may take this opportunity to add up some to the portfolio because majority of the portfolios are holding on to the Asian Paints stock because over the longer term they made good money there. So, they may like to add some more. However, I do not see any meaningful upside happening in Asian Paints over the medium-term. So, a short-term move may happen positively but over the medium term, there can still be a sluggish movement and some more consolidation in Asian Paints. India's engineering goods export sector continues to show resilience: EEPC India

Kolkata, June 17 (UNI) India's engineering goods export sector continues to show resilience despite persistent global challenges, though it recorded a marginal dip in shipments during May 2025, the cumulative number stays positive, according to EEPC India. As per the official data, engineering goods exports declined 0.8 per cent year-on-year in May-25 to $9.89 billion as compared to $9.97 billion in the same month last year. Cumulatively, engineering goods exports during April-May period of FY26 stand at $19.40 billion as against $18.52 billion in the same period last year thus registering a growth of 4.7 pc, EEPC India chairman Pankaj Chadha said on Tuesday. Overall global situation, however, remains volatile. Uncertainty has only been mounting due to geopolitical tensions in the key parts of the world. The latest Israel-Iran conflict threatened to multiply the challenges for the exporting community. Apart from rise in input costs as a result of a jump in crude prices, there was heightened concern around blocking of Straits of Hormuz by Iran in case tensions further intensify. In that case, logistics costs could surge significantly, Chadha said. The doubling of tariff by the US on steel, steel products, and aluminum to 50 pc is already threatening to impact engineering shipments during the current fiscal. It is expected that once India and the US reach an agreement, the tariffs will be reduced, he added. UNI PC PRS

Defence stocks jump up to 3% amid rising Iran-Israel tensions, defence budget boost hopes

Defence stocks rallied up to 3% on Tuesday, in intraday trade amid rising geopolitical tensions between Iran and Israel, coupled with the hopes of an increased defence budget by the government. The heightened global uncertainty appears to have renewed investor interest in India's defence and aerospace segment, with several key stocks touching fresh day highs. Among the gainers, Data Patterns (India) shares surged the most, rising 3% to hit a high of Rs 3,049.50. It was followed by Bharat Dynamics Ltd (BDL) shares, which climbed 2.8% to touch Rs 1,940.70. BEML shares also witnessed strong momentum, gaining 2.2% to reach Rs 4,473.00. Meanwhile, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) shares rose 1.6% intraday, hitting Rs 5,130.50. The rise in these stocks may be attributed to the war tensions in the Middle East between Iran and Israel, as investors see potential in the sector along with an expectation of enhanced defence spending by the Indian government. Commenting on the recent spike in defence counters, Sankhanath Bandyopadhyay, Economist at Infomerics Valuation and Ratings, also said, 'Defence stocks look promising due to the ongoing geopolitical tussle between Iran and Israel. Moreover, the Indian government is likely to enhance defence spending from the current 2% of GDP to 3–4% over the next decade.' He added that with the government targeting Rs 25,000 crore in defence exports by 2025–26, the outlook for export-driven defence stocks remains strong. Also read: Nifty Internet index outperforms peers with 19% returns since Feb launch. Is the dotcom boom here to stay? 'In the current scenario, geopolitical tensions will likely be lingering between different countries, especially as being reflected in rising tensions in the Middle East. Investors should carefully assess the financials and outlook of such stocks before investing, and there should be a judicious mix so that a healthy dividend can also be earned,' he advised.
