Selayang council monitoring strays in Bandar Tasik Puteri after residents injured
On May 2, a teenager was injured after falling while fleeing a pack of stray dogs.
Then on May 10, a woman was bitten while exercising near her home.
'We have approached this issue with prudence after the first case,' MPS deputy president Az'har Samsuri said during the monthly full board meeting at Menara MPS in Bandar Baru Selayang, Selangor.
'MPS has increased patrolling to monitor for stray dogs in the area.'
He said the local council could not confirm if the dogs which chased and/or attacked the residents had been caught.
'We don't know for sure if the dogs in the incidents are wild or have owners.'
Between May 5 and 20, MPS carried out 14 operations which resulted in the capture of 40 dogs.
The animals were transferred to a shelter in Rawang.
Az'har said MPS encountered challenges during enforcement, including public interference.
'Some stray dogs that were in cages were released by the public,' he said.
'Some council officers were also provoked in the course of carrying out their duties.'
He added that some MPS officers encountered feeders who claimed to represent non-governmental organisations but did not show proof of affiliation.
'There are those who support this person feeding strays, and those who don't because feeding attracts more strays.
'We are trying to manage both sides,' said Az'har.
Some individuals, he said, had been feeding strays irresponsibly by leaving food on the road.
'This in turn attracts more dogs into the residential areas.'
On another matter, Az'har said MPS collected RM62.16mil in assessment tax this year, achieving 92.78% of its RM67mil target and recovering RM3.97mil in arrears.
He said digital payments made up 79.32% of April's collections, with over RM2.3mil in transactions recorded through the MyMPS portal.
These included assessment tax, business licences, stall rentals, permits and compounds.
Az'har said preparations were also underway for Malaysia Games (Sukma) 2026 as the MPS Stadium has been selected for the women's football event.
'MPS will be ready for Sukma by the end of the year,' he said in reference to new parking bays under construction, for over 300 vehicles, behind the stadium.
The stadium has undergone major upgrades in the past two years, including a RM7mil field refurbishment, RM800,000 scoreboard, new public announcement system and improved floodlights.
The municipal council also welcomed former MPS deputy president Datuk Cheremi Tarman as the new Orang Besar Daerah Gombak following his recent appointment to the post.
He has been appointed councillor for Zone 2 and will serve on MPS' finance, infrastructure, community and One-Stop Centre (OSC) committees.
Cheremi had previously served as Shah Alam mayor.

Domestic violence cases in Sarawak up nearly 20 pct in 2024

She stressed that domestic violence affects both women and men, and called for a united response across society. 'Violence can happen to anyone – regardless of gender, age, income, or background. 'It is not only physical; emotional manipulation, financial control and long-term psychological harm are equally damaging,' Fatimah said. Her speech text was delivered by her deputy, Rosey Yunus, who represented her in officiating at the closing ceremony of the two-day Breaking the Silence: Violence Prevention in Sarawak forum at a hotel here today. Fatimah said statistics showed that in 2023, there were 178 male victims and 287 female victims, while in 2024, the numbers rose to 181 male victims and 371 female victims. Kuching recorded the highest number of cases, rising from 162 to 190, while Miri saw a drop from 131 to 110. She highlighted that the Sarawak government has implemented several initiatives to tackle the issue, including the 'Know Your Rights' community outreach programme, the 'Pocket Talk' webinar series, and the establishment of One Stop Crisis Centres (OSCCs) in hospitals statewide to provide medical, police and psychological support. Additional support comes from Jabatan Bantuan Guaman Sarawak, which provides legal aid and protection orders, and the Welfare Department, which offers temporary shelters and assistance with court proceedings. However, Fatimah emphasised that addressing domestic violence requires a whole-of-society approach, involving government, NGOs, community leaders, corporations, and the public. 'We must break the culture of silence. 'Society must no longer treat 'minding others' business' as gossip, but as an act of helping. 'If we hear cries or signs of distress, we must not stay silent,' she said. The forum, organised by the Sarawak Social Development Council (MPS) with support from government agencies and NGOs, brought together community leaders, civil society groups, and stakeholders to formulate recommendations for a holistic action plan. Fatimah closed her address by reaffirming the state's commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of all Sarawakians. 'As a state that upholds the principle of no one left behind, we must build a Sarawak where every citizen lives free from violence, respected, and safe,' she said. Also present were KPWK permanent secretary Datu Felicia Tan and MPS executive secretary Riziandy Nawawi. domestic violence Fatimah Abdullah Rosey Yunus

Nationwide raids catch 71 scammers
Seeking information: Comm Rusdi holding up the photo of a man sought by police while standing in front of items seized in the raids. — SAMUEL ONG/The Star KUALA LUMPUR: Seventy-one people, believed to be members of scam syndicates, were arrested following 59 raids in several states. The locations of the three-day raids were identified based on cash withdrawals by the syndicates using ATM cards belonging to mule account holders. Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director Comm Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa said the ATM withdrawals were connected to scam cases reported to the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC). 'The most number of raids were conducted in Kuala Lumpur (24), followed by Penang (11), Sabah (8), Perak (5), Pahang (4), Selangor (3) and two raids each in Negri Sembilan and Sarawak. 'We detained 55 local men, eight local women, and eight foreign men, aged between 19 and 50,' he told reporters yesterday. Various items were seized, including 925 ATM cards, almost RM400,000 in cash, 100 mobile phones, 32 SIM cards, 16 bags and 55 documents, he said. 'The suspects detained were from various syndicates involved in scams and ah long activities. 'They have been operating for quite a while. 'We opened 42 investigation papers for various offences, including cheating, using other people's ATM cards and operating a loan business without a valid licence,' he added. The operation was a success due to collaboration with Bank Negara, he added. Separately, Comm Rusdi said police are looking for a 38-year-old man in connection with an investment scam syndicate. He said the investment scheme called 'Preferences Shares' was handled by a company from 2023. 'A total of 279 reports have been lodged involving losses amounting to RM2.3mil. 'Investigations showed that the victims joined the scheme after taking part in a webinar, which promised them returns of up to 18% a year,' he said. Comm Rusdi said police are looking for Mohd Ezman Zamani, 38, to assist with the investigation. 'We urge those with information to contact investigating officer Asst Supt Mohd Fikri Najib Ismail at 013-983 9854 or Insp Noor Azamin Noor Azahari at 011-655 80848,' he said. In another case, Comm Rusdi said a company allegedly claiming to have access to billions of ringgit in overseas gold and cash reserves is not registered with the Companies Commission of Malaysia. 'We have received 43 reports since 2023 and opened 15 investigation papers under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. 'So far, we have recorded 40 statements from 37 victims and three witnesses to assist in the probe,' he said. Comm Rusdi said investors were promised high returns once the alleged funds could be liquidated, provided enough capital was raised to cover 'management and activation costs'. 'They were persuaded by the mastermind – an individual posing as a 'Datuk Seri' – who spun a story about inheriting assets belonging to an Indonesian national overseas. 'Further checks showed that the 'Datuk Seri' title used by the individual was fake,' Comm Rusdi said. He said the victims were also deceived through forged documents purportedly issued by Bank Negara, complete with fake logos, stamps and signatures. 'We continue to verify the documents with Bank Negara.' It was reported that 57 individuals suffered losses amounting to nearly RM8.4mil after falling victim to what has been described as a 'superstitious' investment scam involving alleged overseas gold and cash reserves worth tens of billions of US dollars.
